Wednesday arrived in the blink of an eye.
This was the first time that students from two-grade years and all four houses were gathered together for a joint practical lesson, so unsurprisingly, a large crowd of young witches and wizards had shown up.
Professor McGonagall, Professor Flitwick, and Professor Sprout were all present on-site. What was even more unusual, though, was that Snape had also decided to come along. Of course, from Sargeras' perspective, the man's presence probably had little to do with any sense of duty and everything to do with seeing what kind of disaster Sargeras himself might stir up this time.
Despite the crowd, the students were all surprisingly well-behaved. After all, they were standing right at the edge of the Forbidden Forest, and with the heads of all four houses keeping a watchful eye on them, no one was foolish enough to act up.
"I know some of you might be curious about what exactly today's lesson involves," Sargeras began, his voice calm but carrying easily across the field. "But I'm afraid I can't tell you the details in advance."
"It's been almost five months since I started teaching you lot, and now, I want to see some real results. So this practical lesson will also serve as a kind of test. What we're looking at today is your ability to react and adapt on the spot. Every magic spell you might need has already been covered in class. And rest assured, I've placed protective enchantments on every single one of you. You won't suffer any real harm."
After calming the slightly restless young witches and wizards, Sargeras continued, "Before the test begins, you're free to form your own groups. Three teams will enter the test area at a time. Remember, your objective is to find a crystal bottle engraved with runes. As long as you successfully bring it out of the test area, you pass."
"To make sure the test is fair, I won't be casting 'Mechanical Mind' on you this time," he added, his tone softening slightly. "But I sincerely hope you'll all be able to stay calm and clear-headed regardless."
With that, Sargeras gave them half an hour to form groups as they pleased.
In the end, more than twenty groups had assembled, some large and some small. The largest group had over thirty students, while the smallest had only two.
"Let's begin! You've all mastered the spells you'll need."
As soon as Sargeras announced the start, the first three teams vanished on the spot.
The thirty-person team from Slytherin was teleported to the Mountain Troll area.
The Gryffindor team, which had five students, was sent to the Forest Troll area.
And the two-person Ravenclaw team found themselves in the Swamp Troll area.
The thirty-person Slytherin team was made up entirely of the seventh-year students from their house. The moment they stepped through the entrance, they found themselves in a rugged, rocky mountain terrain scattered with enormous boulders.
The students quickly scattered in all directions, wasting no time as they began searching for any trace of the crystal bottle.
"Accio, crystal bottle!" One of the students tried to summon it with a Summoning Charm, but as expected, nothing happened.
"Revelio!" Another student attempted the Revealing Charm, hoping to uncover any hidden objects.
"I found it! It's embedded in the rock…"
A Slytherin student shouted excitedly. In front of him stood a massive boulder, and half of the crystal bottle was firmly embedded deep within the stone. He tried several times to pry it loose with Depulso, but it was completely ineffective.
"Let me have a go." Another student stepped forward. He muttered a series of incantations under his breath, and a soft glow flickered from the tip of his wand. The rock around the crystal bottle began to tremble faintly before it finally loosened a little.
"Did it work?" The other students quickly gathered around, their faces filled with curiosity and anticipation.
"Not yet. I think we'll have to work together if we want to get it out." The student holding the wand glanced at the others as he spoke.
"Confringo!" A girl suddenly pointed her wand at the boulder, blasting it with a powerful Blasting Curse. Cracks instantly spread across the stone's surface as tiny fragments flew in every direction.
"Stop it! You'll smash the bottle to pieces!"
"Use your brain, would you? Do you really think that bottle would break so easily?"
"Let's do it together. Use the Blasting Curse to break the rock."
The students crowded around, raising their wands in unison, all pointing straight at the stone as they chanted together, "Confringo!"
The moment the spells echoed through the rocky terrain, the boulder shattered into countless pieces. The runes etched on the crystal bottle suddenly lit up, and in the very next instant, an overwhelming force burst out from within, sending the students stumbling backwards, one after another.
"What… what is that?!" Someone shouted in panic.
Through the crystal bottle, they could clearly see that not far away, a massive figure was struggling to break free of its restraints.
A Mountain Troll — no doubt about it!
The troll let out a furious roar, its enormous fists slamming into the ground with thunderous force. The shockwave sent stones flying in all directions as the students scrambled to dodge. Some hurriedly cast defensive spells, while others simply turned and tried to flee the area.
"Stay calm!" The Slytherin prefect, Walter, shouted at the top of his lungs. "Use the Imperturbable (Barrier) Charm… don't let it get close!"
The students responded quickly, and beams of light shot from their wands, weaving together into a glowing barrier that stretched across the rocky ground, trying to hold the raging troll back.
"Professor Greengrass said aim for the head!"
"Professor also said we should try to avoid it first…"
"Idiot, with this many of us here, how exactly are we supposed to avoid it?"
"Take it down! The exit's right behind it…"
"Protego Maxima!"
"Bombarda Maxima!"
Over thirty students unleashed their spells at the troll all at once. In the face of such overwhelming firepower, dozens of dazzling spell lights rained down upon the troll's head. But the Alpine Rock Troll's skull was wrapped in an exceptionally thick layer of stone-like armor, making its resistance to magic unbelievably strong.
"It's not working… This is an Alpine Rock Troll! Its head is protected by a hardened shell!"
"Use the Conjunctivitis Curse!" Flen shouted, but the words had barely left his mouth when the troll's massive hand swept across the rocky terrain, slapping him clean off the top of a boulder. In full view of everyone, his body dissolved into a streak of white light in mid-air and vanished without a trace.
The sudden scene left the young witches and wizards wide-eyed with fear. Some were already trying to cast Disillusionment Charms to sneak away from the battlefield and quietly make their way toward the exit Portkey, but much to their dismay, they quickly discovered that the Portkey couldn't be activated.
"Diffindo!"
A streak of white light shot from a student's wand, striking the troll squarely on the head. Its horn shattered into pieces on the spot, but instead of bringing the creature down, the attack only sent it into a complete rage.
The Alpine Rock Troll roared furiously as it grabbed a massive chunk of stone from the ground and hurled it straight at the cluster of students.
The boulder crashed into the crowd with a thunderous boom. Several unlucky students caught directly in its path instantly turned into streaks of white light and disappeared.
"Rictusempra!" In a moment of panic, a student blurted out the first mischievous little jinx that came to mind. But his aim was off, and instead of the troll, the streak of spell light hit one of his own teammates.
The girl who was struck doubled over, clutching her stomach as peals of uncontrollable laughter escaped her lips. The troll, seizing the opportunity, lowered its shattered horn and rammed straight into her, instantly reducing her to a fading glow of white light.
"You idiot! What the hell did you just do?!"
"Don't blame me! She was running too fast!"
Another student quickly cast a Transfiguration Charm, turning nearby rocks into a group of giant white rabbits. The rabbits scattered in all directions, instantly drawing the troll's attention.
Seeing that, the other students didn't waste a second. Wands whipped through the air as one Transfiguration spell after another illuminated the battlefield, and in the faint glow, all sorts of colorful little animals leapt and darted among the smoke and debris.
The troll's murky yellow eyes rolled around in confusion, and then, with a sudden roar, it smashed the boulder in its hand into the ground. Fragments of stone exploded outward as two panicked Slytherins were caught in the blast, dissolving into faint silhouettes and vanishing on the spot.
A few young wizards who had been trying to sneak away during the chaos were also caught in the rain of flying rocks, disappearing into white light under the storm of rubble.
In just over ten minutes, the team of thirty had been completely scattered by the troll's assault. Fewer than ten students remained on the field, and even those had all quietly cast Disillusionment Charms on themselves, blending into the surroundings. Only then did the troll finally calm down.
The surviving students stumbled and scrambled their way toward the exit, their hearts pounding with fear. This time, they finally managed to activate the Portkey and were swiftly transported out of the area.
Meanwhile, on the other side, the Gryffindor five-person team had already encountered the Forest Troll deep within the dense woods. Without wasting a moment, they exchanged a quick glance and immediately settled on a strategy. Instead of hiding with Disillusionment Charms, they chose a far more direct approach—Incendio Maxima, setting the nearby trees ablaze.
The flames were deliberately cast high into the treetops. The towering fir trees transformed into blazing torches over ten meters tall. Faced with the roaring fire, the Forest Troll retreated in a panic, and in the end, even the glowing moss on its back caught fire. Completely overwhelmed, the creature fled for good.
But the two-person team from Ravenclaw wasn't nearly as lucky. Their crystal bottle had barely touched the edge of the swamp when, with a squelching sound, a Swamp Troll over three meters tall emerged from the foul, stagnant water.
Startled, the girls froze for a second before Melinda, reacting quickly, raised her wand and cast Glacius. But her wand had only just brushed the water's surface when the Swamp Troll lunged forward, biting down with its enormous jaws. The wand shattered into white light, vanishing without a trace.
Her partner's reaction was noticeably slower. Watching her teammate disappear left her flustered and panicked. Though she eventually managed to cast Glacius as well, successfully freezing the Swamp Troll solid, the crystal bottle was frozen along with it. In the end, she could only give up in frustration.
Snape stood there like a shadowy sculpture, motionless. Every time a student from another house made a mistake, the faint sneer curling at the corner of his lips seemed to suck the warmth right out of the air.
"Looks like Ravenclaw's so-called wisdom isn't all that impressive after all…" he remarked coldly.
"They didn't do that badly, wouldn't you say?" Professor McGonagall's lips pressed into a thin line. The roll of parchment she had been clutching for Transfiguration class was crumpled in her hand. Only when she saw the Gryffindor students use fire to trap the troll did her white-knuckled fingers finally loosen. A faint smile flickered briefly across her face. "But… is this really safe?"
"That's the whole point of the test, Minerva," Professor Flitwick interjected, his voice gentle yet firm. "They need to learn how to think and act under pressure. After all… there aren't many places as safe as Hogwarts in this world."
Sargeras waved his hand, restoring all the testing grounds to their original state. With another wave, the trolls were sealed neatly back into the small crystal bottles.
After that, more and more groups entered the test area one after another. Almost every group had their share of mistakes, but a few students truly stood out.
A fourth-year Ravenclaw student, Joffrin, used "Dig Three Feet" to tunnel a pitfall, successfully trapping the dim-witted Mountain Troll.
A seventh-year Hufflepuff, Cooper, cast a Levitation Charm to raise a large rock above the Swamp Troll's head. With precise timing, he followed up with Sonorus to guide the rock, sending it crashing down onto the creature's skull and knocking it unconscious.
A seventh-year Slytherin, Paean, used the "Swamp Curse " to trap the Forest Troll with ease, passing the test without breaking a sweat.
A sixth-year Gryffindor student, Grace, used "Collapse Ground" to bring the troll tumbling down, then followed it up with "Boulder Slam," striking its head with a heavy stone.
Some students cleverly used Disillusionment Charms to avoid the trolls entirely.
Some unleashed Multi-Shot Jinx to bombard the Forest Troll until it passed out.
Others used Glisseo to topple the Mountain Troll, Drying Charm to weaken the River Troll, or Transfiguration to alter the terrain to their advantage.
"These kids have more dueling potential than I expected," Professor Flitwick remarked with a smile, clapping his hands in approval. "But getting them to truly master these spells… now that's going to be no easy task. And I know that better than anyone."
Professor Sprout nodded in agreement. "Indeed… it seems Sargeras' lessons are yielding good results."
Finally, when the last group of students carried their crystal bottle out of the testing grounds, a wave of cheers erupted along the edge of the Forbidden Forest.
