Chapter 29: Teaching Lumos

By the time early March rolled around, Sargeras' classes had become more and more popular at Hogwarts, ever since students were allowed to sit in and audit them.

That day, he had just stepped into the classroom with his textbook in hand, only to see a group of students crowding around his messenger, Noctis, all chattering away with a barrage of questions.

The raven perched on the lectern looked thoroughly fed up with the noise. With an impatient flap of its wings, it soared straight up to the ceiling and stayed there, refusing to come down again.

The students, once they realized that Noctis wasn't dangerous, clearly grew a lot bolder. They didn't dare pester Sargeras himself, so naturally, they set their sights on his messenger instead.

As usual, the classroom was packed for today's lesson. There were even a few first-year witches and wizards squeezed into the seats at the back. Sargeras did not recognize most of them, but he quickly spotted Harry and his two friends sitting right up front, their eyes bright with curiosity, fixed intently on the blackboard.

Harry and Ron both felt that attending Professor Greengrass' lectures was probably the smartest decision they'd ever made — though, of course, they conveniently forgot that it was Hermione who had practically dragged them here in the first place with threats and bribes alike…

Still, they'd picked up quite a lot from these lessons. Even though some of the spells covered were beyond their current level, the material had definitely been a huge help with their regular coursework.

Harry had even splurged on three upper-year rune crystal vials from the Weasley twins. Those little crystal bottles had cost him a grand total of seventeen Galleons. And sure, money wasn't exactly an issue for him… but even so, it still stung a little handing over that much gold.

But once he got his hands on the vials, all those regrets vanished. The rune crystal vials made by Professor Greengrass were ridiculously practical. Every time Harry went to the Great Hall for a meal, he would sneak a little extra food into one of the vials and later share the snacks with his Gryffindor friends once they got back to the common room.

Honestly, every time he sat in the common room at midnight, munching away on a late-night feast, he felt that money was worth every knut.

He had also given one vial each to Ron and Hermione. Ron promptly filled his with Butterbeer (which was completely against the rules) while Hermione, naturally, used hers to smuggle out books from the Hogwarts library.

Sargeras strode into the classroom, set his textbook down on the desk, and got straight to the point without wasting a moment on introductions or unnecessary chatter.

"In today's lesson, we will be studying the distribution of magical nodes for the Lumos spell…" He placed his textbook neatly on the desk, snapped his fingers with casual ease, and in an instant, the entire classroom plunged into complete darkness.

"Now, put away all your foolish fantasies—Lumos isn't some fancy mood light from a romantic love story. It's your very first line of defense against the dark."

A few soft chuckles rippled through the pitch-black classroom, but they faded quickly. The moment Sargeras cast Lumos, the gentle glow of the spell illuminated the entire room.

"The true essence of this spell lies in control, not simply in its creation."

The glowing orb at the tip of his wand suddenly scattered into a swarm of shimmering fireflies, drifting down like floating stars, gently settling on the stunned students' shoulders.

Cedric Diggory from Hufflepuff couldn't help raising his hand with a question. "But Professor… the book says…"

"The textbook was written two hundred years ago."

Before Cedric could finish, the firefly perched on his shoulder burst apart into a scatter of glowing specks. A few shining words appeared on the surface of his desk: Auditors are not permitted to ask questions!

Cedric scratched the back of his head awkwardly. His classmates on either side took one look at his expression and couldn't hold back their laughter, covering their mouths as they snickered quietly.

"I'll say this one more time—questions are generally not encouraged in my class, which is precisely why there is almost no extra credit."

Sargeras swept his gaze over the students who were sitting quietly and behaving themselves, his voice calm as ever. "And since you're from different year groups, your learning progress will naturally vary as well…"

Many of the younger students hadn't even learned a handful of spells yet, while the content covered in his lessons spanned nearly everything up to the O.W.L. exams. That meant quite a few of the spells he discussed were things the lower years hadn't even encountered before.

"But that's your problem to figure out…" Sargeras continued, casually waving his wand as he spoke without even looking back. "Lumos is a very simple spell… but its uses are far more extensive than you might think. Repelling darkness, blinding enemies with flashes of light, signaling teammates…"

"And if you can skillfully harness the ambient magic in your environment to reshape the form of the Lumos…"

He gave his wand a gentle wave, and all the fireflies floating around the room transformed into miniature ravens.

"Then congratulations… you've learned the basics of decoy tactics."

The tiny glowing creatures kept shifting forms, finally morphing into little glowing figures that perfectly resembled each of the students sitting in the class, perched lightly on their shoulders.

Sargeras looked around at the classroom, watching the expressions of awe and wonder on every student's face, and nodded with quiet satisfaction.

Even the simplest spell could unfold into countless possibilities. It had taken him nearly ten years to truly understand that principle. Thankfully, he hadn't come to that realization too late… after all, there were plenty of witches and wizards who would go their whole lives without ever grasping it.

With another flick of his wand, the tiny glowing versions of the students stood up on their shoulders, each pulling out a miniature glowing wand of their own, casting an even smaller Lumos.

Such precise control of magical energy was anything but simple. Sargeras was quite sure that in the entire wizarding world, there were only a handful of people who could pull off something like that.

After that, he taught them how to use light to transmit messages and how to manipulate its glow to drive away dark creatures lurking in the shadows.

By the time the class was nearing its end, most of the students were still completely immersed in the dazzling brilliance of the lesson.

When the class finally dismissed, Hermione carefully tucked the tiny glowing version of "herself" from her shoulder into the rune crystal vial that Harry had given her. She looked rather pleased with herself.

With a sweep of his wand, Sargeras scattered the lingering darkness in the classroom. His wand traced faint arcs of light through the air as all the glowing orbs of Lumos slowly faded away.

"Remember this," his voice echoed in the quiet room, calm yet firm, "the most dangerous darkness is never the shadows cast by the world around you, but the single moment of hesitation when you cast your spell."

Seeing how everyone perked up their ears attentively, he finally gave in with a small wave of his wand.

In an instant, glowing notes and spell diagrams appeared across the surface of everyone's textbooks, illuminating the pages like delicate silver etchings.

"These are some advanced applications of Lumos. We don't have time to cover them all in detail, but those of you who are curious, take a look for yourselves."

Just as he picked up his textbook and prepared to leave, he paused, turning back to remind them, "Oh, and the writing will only last until tomorrow morning's breakfast…"

Several students immediately snatched up their quills and scrambled to copy the glowing notes onto their own textbooks.

Sargeras left the classroom and made his way straight to the Hogwarts library. For the next two days, he had no scheduled classes—meaning this was about to be a rare stretch of peaceful free time.

The school year was set to end in three months, and most of the courses had already shifted into review sessions. The workload for the young witches and wizards was piling up quickly, and Sargeras often spotted them buried in books, studying intently among the library shelves.

Frankly, he quite liked this scene. Sure, his classes didn't assign homework, but the other professors certainly made up for that. And compared to having these little witches and wizards running wild through the castle, "exercising their brains" or "burning off energy" in all directions, he much preferred seeing them quietly poring over books in the library.

After all, Merlin only knew what sort of chaos they might unleash if left to their own devices in this place.
