Chapter 28: Chapter 28-Soured Joy!
Chapter 28
NARCISSA MALFOY
Lucius had been rather insistent upon meeting with Draco, and despite her wishes, she took Draco to his hideout, giving him a chance to meet with his son.
Draco was very happy to see his father as well, their union marred by the absence of his twin, yet Lucius made no mention of Cassius. She had been much apprehensive about bringing Draco to this place, yet she was left with no choice, and the only semblance of relief was the joy on her son's face as he met with Lucius.
"Remember, Draco, you cannot speak of this to anyone," Lucius warned their eldest, who nodded enthusiastically.
"I know. But why did you not bring Cassius?" he asked, turning towards her, and the room turned into silence as they sat in the dining Hall.
"He would have wanted to meet you as well." Draco remained oblivious to how Lucius's fists balled up in rage as she quickly cut in, putting down her fork.
"Perhaps, I can writ...."
"That is quite en..."
"You will do no such thing!" But Lucius's voice was stronger and louder, and it seemed to startle even Draco, whose face paled, yet he did not understand.
"But why, he is my tw..."
"He is not your brother!" and she had prayed that it would not come to this, and Draco's eyes widened as Lucius raged.
"Not anymore." At those words, Draco turned to face her.
"What does he mean by that?" and she had pleaded to Lucius, and yet her pleas had gone unanswered and so she told Draco the truth. The half-truth.
"Your father has decided to disinherit, Cassius. By law he is no longer your brother," and the very words made her heart twist and turn, as Draco's face paled.
"WHAT!" his surprise was evident as he jumped out of his chair.
"But why! What has h..."
"ENOUGH!" she cut in before Lucius could lose his temper and forget about his promise.
"The decision is made..."
"But why? He is my twin, and wha...."
And he was insistent, and she was on her feet as she cut in before Lucius.
"Because your brother is a blood traitor!" and that was the lie he had made Lucius agree on. And their eyes met, hers and Lucius' as his lips thinned in rage.
"He continues to fraternise with those mud-bloods despite our warnings! And so we had to make a choice to defend our values and traditions! From this day, you have no brother, and I have no son!" and the very cut deep, but it needed to be done.
"B...."
"We will talk of it no more!" she admonished him as Draco looked into her eyes.
And then they ate in silence, the joy from earlier all but gone as they finished their dinner, and both she and Draco made for the door.
Lucius came to see them off as Draco waited for her at the gates.
"You cannot protect him for long," he warned her, and she knew who he was talking about.
"He is my son," she argued.
"Maybe, but he is no son of mine," and with that, he turned away, leaving her alone with Draco as they gripped the portkey.
"Why?" he asked again.
"Why did you disinherit Cassius?" he asked again.
"I told you, didn't I? Your brother is a blood traitor...." and so the portkey came and took them away.
.
.
Back in the hideout, Lucius Malfoy turned around and found Greyback standing opposite to him.
"Your own son a blood traitor? What would the Dark Lord say to that?" the monster added, as Lucius's own eyes narrowed.
"He is no son of mine. Not anymore!" he replied coldly, and Greyback raised an eyebrow.
"Those are but words. He is still your blood. You must prove it, until words are wind," and the man stepped forward as Lucius's eyes glinted.
"Perhaps we should teach him a lesson," and the suggestion was sound as Lucius's lips turned up.
"Why not...."

CASSIUS MALFOY
It was the weekend, and finally, Cassius could begin to unravel the troubles he had found himself in. His mother had done him a great favor, and so, in the end, he had decided to repay her by trying to exonerate his father.
He knew that his father had done some heinous crimes during the war, whether he had been a part of the bones massacre or not, he did not know. But he was certain that one person was a part of it.
A person who roamed free to this day.
The task at hand would not be easy by any means. He would have to force the DMLE's hand, something he could not do openly, and so he needed a proxy, someone to act on his behalf as he remained in the shadows.
Initially, he had thought that Sirius Black could take that role, and yet that idiot's actions had done him enough harm, so he began to review his options. in the end, he could think of but one man who could do this for him.
And so, he waited in the Private Chambers of Gringott's waiting for this very person as he played with the newly acquired signet ring that now adorned his ring finger. The emblem of the House of Black was inscribed into the dark gem decorating it.
The disinheritance had legally emancipated him, hence allowing him access to his inheritance and position as the Lord of the Black family years early. And despite years of inactivity, the Blacks were still an old and prominent family with wealth and connections that ran deep.
Suddenly, the doors swung open as a tall, and slender man with dark brown hair. A man he recognised at a glance.
"Ohh, pardon me. I think I am in the wrong roo...."
"You are not," Cassius cut in as he added, making the man stop as he turned around to face him.
"You are in the right room, Mr. Ted," and the man slowly closed the door behind him as he walked forward, a frown now marring his face.
"I am supposed to meet with someone very special. Someone who has helped a close family member of mine, and now have offered me a chance to represent the House of Black," and Cassius shrugged as he spread his arms.
"That is me," and the man frowned as he stood opposite to him, looking him up and down raking his mind.
"You! I know you," he suddenly added, as his eyes widened.
"You are Cassius Malfoy. You were friends with my daughter," and Cassius nodded as he put forward his hand.
"It is good to finally meet you face to face, I have heard much about you," and the man shook his hand, as the surprise continued to register.
"You were the one who sent all that information to me regarding Sirius?" and Cassius.
"Yes, and I am afraid I am no longer a Malfoy." and the man's face stilled at that.
"I have been disinherited, and so I find myself in need of your services regarding that and a lot more," and so the man sat down. It had cost him an arm and a leg to set this meeting up, but with the Black family fortune now in his command, money was not a problem for him.
"You see, before he died, Lord Arcturus Black made a will naming me as his chosen heir. Though the will, had certain stipulations that needed to be fulfilled before it could be executed," and all those had been fulfilled.
Cassius pushed forward the envelope containing the will, and the man still was able to act despite his surprise as he picked it up and took out the piece of paper inside it.
"According to it, for me to inherit his title and everything associated with it, I had to give up my family name and be an adult. Two conditions which have now been fulfilled," and so the will could be executed.
"But you are what thirteen?" he added.
"Fourteen," Cassius corrected him, not that it made much of a difference.
"But my age has no legal bearing on that document, for my emancipation makes me a legal adult," and that made him a Lord.
The man scoured through the will and the documents alongside it, pouring over them as Cassius sat opposite to him.
"You are right!" he added with a surprise, as Cassius shrugged. He had spent days pouring over it all.
"I am in need of a lawyer to execute the will, and make the claim at the Ministry. But that is not all I ask of you," and at that, he looked into the man's eyes.
"Given my age, I am also looking for someone to represent to present my interests while keeping my real identity in check. It is tradition for old families to have lawyers, do that part and so I am officially offering you the position of the Black Family's designated legal lead," and the contract for that was within them.
He would make a killer salary, more than he would any other way. It was why such a position was highly coveted, and to this day had never been offered to a barrister who not a pure-blood or at least a half-blood.
"You are fourteen, right?" he asked again as Cassius chuckled.
"I would not focus on my age. I may be fourteen, but I know what I am doing," and his tone was stiff, for he did not wish to engage in this discussion again.
He seemed to get the point, as he leaned back and re-read the contract he had offered him.
"Why me?" he asked, and the answer was easy.
"Because I can trust you. I don't care about your blood status, though I will not lie that your ties to the family did help me in choosing you," and the man nodded, having gotten the answer.
"How did you know about Peter Pettigrew? How did you know that I would take Sirus's case?" and Cassius pointed at the contract.
"Sign that, and I will consider answering your questions. Until then, my lips will remain sealed," and there was silence, and for good reason.
Even for him, it was not an easy decision. Taking this job would mean painting a target on his back and putting his family in the spotlight. And once they were there it would be neigh impossible to reverse that.
Yet still, a minute or so later, the man leaned forward and took the quill and put his signature on the contract.
"Well, then I am your lawyer now," and though he may not show it, Cassius was relieved as well at this. He had a few other options in mind, but none were more suited to his needs than him.
"Then let us begin...."
.
.
.
And there was too much for the man to deal with. The Black family had been without a lord and a lawyer for years, and so there was much to work out. The family owned some prime real estate and had made sound investments over the years.
As the legal lead of the family, it fell to him to take care of it all. And as the lord, the decision-making lay in his hands.
They talked for an hour, dealing with all that they could until the man finally sighed as the table between them was filled with a stack of files.
"You are not a normal child, are you?" he asked, and it would have offended him if it was not true.
"I am not. And I am afraid there is one more thing left for us to discuss," Cassius began, getting tired himself as he moved to the last item in the itinerary.
"And what's that?"
"I need you to make a deal with the head of the DMLE...."

In the ancient Greengrass mansion, the family of three sat around the table as they gathered for their family meal. The Head of the Family, Cyrus Greengrass, sat at the Head of the table as his two daughters sat at his side. The air was thick with tension as the family of three ate in silence.
And there was not much to say. However, it the silence uncharacteristically broken by the man who turned towards his eldest.
"I asked you to make terms with the Malfoys once did I not?" he suddenly asked, the question seemed to surprise the eldest, girl but for a second before the blonde straightened and answered back.
"Yes, you did. And I am friends with them," she answered.
"Which one?" he asked, and she was a bit taken aback by the specificity of his question, for it should not matter much to him about which one she was friends with.
"I am acquainted with both of them, but I am on much better terms with the youngest one, Cassius," she answered, frowning as she saw his father turn towards her, his lips thinning as he put down his fork.
"Then I am afraid that friendship is but a waste now," and the words made her head snap.
"Cassius is the younger twin, but he is a Malfoy and is far smarter and astute than his brot..." but her words were cut short as he cut in once more.
"I am afraid you are wrong," and the table became silent.
"What do you mean by that?" she asked, realizing that there was a problem here.
"Because one of my contacts in the Ministry brought me something rather interesting yesterday. The Malfoys have moved to disinherit one of their sons," and the words made Daphne still, her eyes widened in surprise.
"What!" she gasped as the lean man with a vanishing hairline continued.
"Yes, and I am afraid the process was completed a day ago. Cassius Malfoy is no longer associated with the Malfoys," and as the blonde's mind raced, she sat there too stunned to speak.
"So, your years of effort have all been mad...." but before he could say anymore, the girl had put down her fork and was on her feet.
"I need to go...."
