Chapter 60: Chapter 60: Dragon Ball! Dragon Ball!
After defeating Dodoria and Zarbon, the surrounding area lay in ruins, the ground pitted with craters and the air tinged with the metallic scent of blood. Everyone resumed their search for the Dragon Ball, encountering and fiercely battling other soldiers from Frieza's forces along the way.
Raditz didn't immediately join the search. Instead, following Tumat's suggestion, he released their spaceship in an open area and retrieved the six Dragon Balls they'd already collected. Tumat had pointed out that the space Dragon Ball radar's accuracy at close range wasn't precise enough, and the Earth-made radar was subject to various interferences. Tumat had proposed attempting to improve its accuracy, or possibly creating a new one altogether.
Tumat flew around the six Dragon Balls, his eyeballs scanning them intently as he tried to touch their surface. To his surprise, the Dragon Balls responded by glowing brightly.
Nothing so magical existed in his world, and he was momentarily captivated by their nature.
"Well? Now that you've seen them up close, can you make an improved radar?" Raditz gently patted Tumat's small head.
Tumat folded his wings and looked up at Raditz. "I'll need the original Dragon Ball radar first—let me analyze its structure."
"Here you go."
Sensing something interesting was about to happen, Raditz immediately produced the space Dragon Ball radar and placed it before Tumat.
The Mechanical God, created by the technologically advanced Tumatians, possessed remarkable research capabilities. He first scanned the structure of the Dragon Ball radar, then analyzed the wavelength patterns emitted by the Dragon Balls themselves, before falling into deep contemplation.
Raditz didn't disturb Tumat's thinking process. High technology wasn't his area of expertise, and he knew scientists often required quiet, stable environments when conducting research. He stood silently, hoping for quick results.
Finally, after nearly half an hour of consideration, Tumat spoke: "I never expected Earth to have such a brilliant inventor capable of creating a Dragon Ball radar! Truly remarkable!"
Earth's technology wasn't particularly advanced by universal standards—the planet hadn't even developed large-scale space travel capability. Many cosmic civilizations dismissed it as a primitive world. They would never have imagined that Earth housed genius scientists like Bulma, who would eventually create something as extraordinary as a time machine!
Even Tumat was surprised, offering repeated praise.
"Can you improve it?" Raditz asked.
"I've almost completely decoded the radar's structure. Optimizing its accuracy should be feasible." Tumat approached the radar, examining it from every angle before using the tip of his wing to open the access panel. He began adjusting the delicate components inside.
Though lacking human-like hands, Tumat's wings and claws enabled him to work even more precisely than human fingers could, eliminating the need for tools entirely.
Building upon the original design, the modification didn't take long to complete.
Tumat converted the button originally installed on top into a dial. By turning this dial, the radar could enlarge or reduce the grid lines on the screen to specific magnifications, displaying smaller areas with greater precision than the Earth's Dragon Ball radar had been capable of.
"I studied the electromagnetic waves radiated by the Dragon Balls, then adjusted the receiving frequency of the radar accordingly. Additionally, sliding the dial left and right zooms to specified magnifications, while sliding it forward and backward adjusts the vertical response interface. This means it can detect Dragon Balls that have fallen into oceans or deep trenches. Given the opportunity, I would love to collaborate with this radar's inventor to develop a fully three-dimensional exploration device."
Raditz took the radar, familiarized himself with the new controls, and tested it. Six large flashing points appeared clustered together in the center of the screen. The arrow indicating his position aligned perfectly with the flashing points, confirming his current location. When he zoomed in to a higher magnification, the display remained clear and precise.
"Tumat, you're incredible! Hahaha!" Raditz clapped Tumat's wing, laughing heartily.
In his excitement, the slap was too forceful, sending Tumat spinning through the air several times.
...
On planet Filo, Raditz flew between mountain ranges.
The dry climate had stunted vegetation growth, while long-term wind erosion had shaped the rocks into bizarre formations. With the enhanced radar providing clear guidance, he arrived at his destination without difficulty.
"It's somewhere around here." Raditz hovered in mid-air, studying the radar.
A bright spot pulsed nearby, giving off a strong signal.
Sliding the dial back and forth, he checked the depth reading, which indicated the Dragon Ball was just below ground level.
Raditz landed on a patch of weeds. "It's right here." He waved his hand, generating a powerful gust that uprooted all the surrounding vegetation and anything hidden within it. Insects, pebbles, and sand went flying, but there was no sign of the Dragon Ball.
The windblast had stripped the area bare, revealing the barren earth beneath.
"Since Turles placed it here, he must have taken precautions. It's probably hidden in some kind of safe or container..." Raditz mused, standing directly above the spot indicated by the radar.
He placed one hand on the ground, channeled his energy, and punched downward with explosive force.
"BOOM!"
A thunderous sound rang out as the surrounding ground cracked, forming a crater. Raditz felt his hand connect with something solid and unyielding.
Looking closer, he saw he'd struck a sealed metal box, leaving a palm-shaped impression in its surface.
"Finally found it! The four-star ball!"
Overjoyed, Raditz exclaimed, "Just as I thought—it's in a safe. But even that couldn't hide it from our radar." He raised his fist, preparing to smash the container to pieces.
"DANGER!" Tumat spread his wings to block Raditz's descending fist. Startled, Raditz halted his attack immediately. As he pulled back, he felt a sharp pain shoot through his arm from the sudden tension.
"What are you doing?! If I had hit you, you'd be nothing but scrap metal!"
"This container has security mechanisms! If opened by force, it will trigger a self-destruct device—not only releasing toxins but causing a massive explosion!"
Raditz paled at this revelation. The toxins and explosion wouldn't be lethal to him—at worst, he'd suffer some injuries—but if the Dragon Ball were destroyed, they'd face a serious problem.
Turles had apparently planned for Frieza's forces to find the Dragon Ball, only to die along with it when they tried to retrieve it. The bastard was truly cunning.
"Can you disarm it?"
"Don't worry, leave it to me." Tumat patted his chest confidently.
He spread his wings and first analyzed the box's structure, unlocking the complex electronic security system. Then, transforming into an expert bomb disposal technician, he systematically disabled both the explosive device and the poison gas mechanism.
"Tumat, I have to say it again—you're absolutely amazing!" Raditz watched the dazzling display of technical skill with sincere admiration. The electronic lock alone used an incredibly complex algorithm that would have been practically impossible to crack with human intelligence alone.
He felt immensely grateful to have Tumat as his assistant.
At last, Raditz lifted the Dragon Ball from its container, adding the four-star ball to their collection.
