Chapter 38: Chapter 32: I Don't Want to Remember
The sun shone on the islands this day as if reflecting the spirit of the human inhabitants who rose with light feet to work another day after celebrating the inauguration of the monument in the square the day before
The parents were getting ready to start the day and woke up with difficulty the children who had to have breakfast and go to school that was founded shortly after the arrival on the islands
This was at the suggestion of Tom who always advocated education regardless of the situation, since only then would humanity have a future
This routine was adopted by all families since humanity gained stability, including the strangest family on the islands
-Petrikov House-
"get up"
"Nuh-uh"
"get up"
"Nuh-uh"
"you are 21 years old and have lives to protect"
"they can wait"
"....."
-10 minutes later-
Two pale people and a human-sized ice cube were having breakfast in a peaceful environment
The vampire queen and princess of the Nightosphere, Marceline Abadeer
First human protector of the islands and sometime ice sculpture, Chemy Mertens
Ice prince, hero of OOO, savior of humanity, vampire hunter and ironically King of the vampires, Blanche Petrikov
Everyone sat at the table enjoying their respective breakfasts, except Blanche who had a bowl full of animal blood and was slurping it down with disgust visible on his face
Marceline meanwhile was decolorizing several apples and strawberries with delight
Chemy who had only her head out of her ice prison was using her specially made straw to drink his fruit smoothie, prepared by his "loving" caretaker
"[slurp] ahhh...delicious, now…GET ME OUT OF HERE!"
"what's the magic word?"
"YOU CAN GO TO- please"
-20 minutes later at the entrance of the house-
Marceline said goodbye to Chemy kissing her forehead and handing her a packed lunch
"Have a good first day girl and kill lots of things for me"
Blanche said goodbye with a soft hug
"Remember your training and don't overdo it, we're going to have a family outing tomorrow"
"I will, see you at sunset! Don't die of old age!"
Chemy with immense motivation ran at full speed towards the city to start patrolling in search of problems to solve
Marceline and Blanche stayed in front of the house watching as her back disappeared in the distance
"Time goes by fast don't you think Blanchie? She's almost a responsible adult now [giggle], much more than me"
Marceline rested her head on Blanche's shoulder, who was still staring into the distance in silence
"[sigh] yeah...you're right"
-the next day-
The whole family was in the kitchen preparing lunch, mainly for Chemy since she's the only one who eats normal food
But Blanche enjoys cooking and teaching Chemy hIS recipes so he's the main chef
He was chopping vegetables at full speed and preparing various ingredients before putting them in the pot
While she…..was chopping onions, why? because Blanche convinced her that it was useful to train willpower (the truth is that he hates cutting onions)
And Marceline offered emotional support from the couch watching a movie
Soon the table was set and everyone sat down to sink their fangs (ahem, laughter please)
So time passed quietly until everyone finished their meal with a smile on their face, except Blanche
By the time they finished washing the utensils and dishes the sun was at its highest point, the day outside seemed ideal to go out for a walk so Blanche got ready with a picnic basket and a blanket to put on the ground, as well as a frisbee to play with for a while, meanwhile Chemy prepared some snacks to take with her, a couple of sandwiches, orange juice, red things for Marcy and a small bottle of animal blood for Blanche
And on her side, Marceline went up to her room in search of a umbrella to go outside
Once everyone was ready they left the house dressed in light clothes to hot days, they walked slowly under the hot sun shining in the sky and pleasantly warming the atmosphere on the islands, soon they came across several families wearing the traditional animal hat who had the same idea
all the inhabitants knew the Petrikov family
So the greetings and requests for autographs from the children came in droves, all dreaming or dreamed of being protectors of the islands one day
Everyone carried comics about how humanity was saved, action toys of Blanche in his hunter's clothes or Marcy with her axe and plenty of clothes with a variety of images of them
Several merchants took advantage of the admiration of all the humans to create merchandise that sold quite well
Something that did not go unnoticed by Tom, who although he did not stop it since it stimulated the economy on the islands, managed to get part of the profits given to the Petrikov family
Once the children calmed down, they all continued walking towards the founders' park, the place where the statues were placed
The journey was comfortable since the streets that were previously dirt were now stone, although only the main streets since they do not have the machinery or the materials to cover them all
Much less make pavement, but little by little the islands are taking on an appearance closer to the industrial revolution, only this time, learning from the mistakes of their ancestors, everything is processed in a nature-friendly way
This slows down all technological advancement but in the long run it was decided that it was a better option than destroying the only place they found to survive
When they finished signing everything they continued walking in the same direction while observing the new businesses on the side of the road, clothing, food, furniture, etc
Everything but technology, all the technology was in use in the building of the leader of the islands near the park used to handle the administrative affairs of the islands
Marcy and Chemy were particularly interested in the clothing stores and made plans to visit as a family to the dismay of Blanche who knew what was coming
They finally arrived at the park where the group of families dispersed after saying goodbye to the petrikovs who found a nice place near the statues with some shade to place the blanket and the basket
Together they sat and enjoyed the soft grass and the fresh air as well as the warmth of the environment surrounded by happy families
-Blanche pov-
With such a view, surrounded by people I love, remembering the past, I can say it was worth it
"Marcy why does the old man seem so thoughtful (whispering)?"
My moment of reflection and peace was interrupted by the voice of an adult who doesn't seem to mature
"He probably thinks about the past, he likes to get sentimental in peaceful moments, I think he needs to be taken to a psychologist (whispering)"
And another voice belonging to someone who I'm sure won't mature
"You know I can hear you?"
"We know""
"..."
"Sooooo, what were you thinking, in the past?"
Chemy came over and looked at me with curious eyes, I don't really talk much about the past with her, neither do Marcy
"ok kids, I really don't like talking about the past so I'm going to cut this conversation short, wake me up so I can eat"
Marcy laid down in the shade and put on some sunglasses, just a few seconds later some soft snores could be heard
"she really has a talent for sleeping, as for your question…yes I was remembering, it makes me appreciate every moment of the present"
"[giggle] you're always so dramatic...what was it like?
"what was it like?"
"Before the bombs, you never talk about it"
"[sigh] you're right, I guess telling a little won't hurt"
"The planet was run by the human race for the human race, leaving almost nothing for the rest of the living world...that wild and free world, they destroyed it, not only ruined it, the non-human world almost disappeared"
"their own actions led them to war over what little was left of that wild world and they ended up destroying each other in the process"
"so in the last years of humanity, even though the world was at war, people still got up every day to work ignoring the possibility of the end since almost no one thought it would end that quickly"
"As for me, I was born in that time, just before everything blew up, but those few years I traveled with my father, Simon Petrikov, my father lost something precious to him so we went out in search of it"
"we visited many places, although we never found what we were looking for we both theorized that what we were looking for was somewhere else, out of our reach for the moment"
"Wooow, that sounds horrible, I think I prefer the islands….what they were looking for….was your mother wasn't it?"
"Yes, Betty, I barely knew her when I was a baby, my father used to tell me that I got the fearless side from her, nothing like him [laughs] even my eyes are like hers"
"although to be honest, I never thought much about her when looking for her, I never really knew her, but she meant everything to Simon, so I helped as I could"
"He taught me many things and even though I could take care of myself well, he never left my side for many years, trying to protect me and Marcy as best he could by sacrificing everything he had."
"Your father sounds like a good man…what happened to him?"
"Well, when I said he sacrificed everything to protect us, I meant it literally, he, like me, had the ability to control ice. The problem is that his power had a Price, we thought that with practice he could master it, but we were wrong."
"His mind was consumed little by little, to the point where sometimes his powers went out of control, endangering everything close to him, so he made the difficult decision to leave, banishing himself to the depths of the snowy mountains so as not to harm anyone."
"[sigh] I miss him every day."
"I'm really sorry your father left. I would have loved to meet him, make jokes and call him super old man [giggle]."
"[giggle] I know he would have loved you, just like Marcy and I love you."
"Thank you... Dad, for telling me this."
I ruffled Chemy's brown hair lovingly.
"Whenever you want, the next story will be about Marcy, you knew I had to sing to her every night so she would fall asleep (whisper)"
"OK, enough with the stories!"
Marceline casually appeared out of nowhere, with the basket of food and looking at me as if she wanted to rip my soul out
"[awkward laugh] yeah, maybe another time, I'm dying to eat rancid blood"
While Marcy enjoyed her snack I watched Chemy devour her sandwiches each in two bites and then drink her glass of orange juice in one gulp (deja vu)
Her mouth was full of crumbs as she looked at me confused, it reminded me of when she was a little girl so I approached her and helped her remove them with a tissue
"HEY, don't do that in public, I'm not a little girl anymore you damn old man!"
-later at dusk-
"I hate this game"
"Stop whining and pay up Blanchie"
"Yes old man hand over the money"
The family of 3 was playing cards, the score was 10/7/0, Marceline won 10 times, Chemy 7 and Blanche….0
"I know you're cheating, but how!"
"It's called skill old man"
"And I won again"
Marceline showed her cards, another crushing victory, another loss for Blanche, he let his head crash into the table totally defeated
-living room-
They were all huddled on the couch with Chemy in the middle watching an old musical from before the war, although Chemy was already asleep for the first 10 minutes
So they watched the movie in comfortable silence, once it was over, he got up and made room for Chemy to lay down and rest his head on Marcy's lap
"I'm going to get her a blanket, I don't think she'll wake up until tomorrow" (whispering)
"Get two, I can't leave and risk waking sleeping beauty" (whispering)
Marceline watched as he left for the stairs before turning her gaze to the mop of hair sleeping in his lap
She gently brushed Chemy's hair away from her face to reveal her sleeping, drooling face, she had to hold back her laughter
This situation reminded her of her own mother and how she used to sing her to sleep, she couldn't help but hum the song while stroking Chemy's hair
When Blanche came back with the blankets he came across Marcy softly humming her mother's song, a song he used to sing to her to put her to sleep after her mother left
With a smile on his face and his heart warm he sat down next to her and began to softly sing along with her humming
Let's go in the garden
You'll find something waitin'
Right there where you left it
Lying upside down
When you finally find it
You'll see how it's faded
The underside is lighter
When you turn it around
Everything stays
Right where you left it
Everything stays
But it still changes
Ever so slightly
Daily and nightly
In little ways
When everything stays
-63 years later-
Blanche was looking at the sky lying on a stretch of green grass in silence in front of two large statues, his eyes distant, almost empty and dull
He was lost in his memories
Looking back through the last years of his life and how he ended up in that place
{flashback}
-70 years ago- -Chemy 14 years old-
"That was the last tent Tom!"
Blanche and all the humans had just arrived at the islands and spent the whole day setting up a settlement so they could rest before starting to explore
The sun was already setting and everyone was exhausted from the long boat trip, Marcy and Chemy had gone out to look for food for everyone
"Okay, thanks Blanche, I'm going to make an inventory of what's on the boat so you just sit down for a while and rest, you earned it, we all earned it"
Blanche, somewhat exhausted by the long period at sea, finally let out a sigh and let herself fall for a while on a log that served as a temporary chair
"Guys! Who wants mutated boar?!"
The break was interrupted by Marcy and Chemy who came back dragging a huge boar to feed the camp
Everyone looked happily at the food and as Marcy dragged the huge boar to the makeshift cooking tent, a white bunny-eared blob ran up and jumped into Blanche's arms
"Blanchie you should have seen how Marcy killed that boar, it was amazing!"
"[giggle] you know who taught her that? Me, am I not cool?"
"woaa can you teach me!?"
"[giggle] sure, when you're older"
"yeeeees! I'm going to kill things! [Yawn]"
"Mmm looks like it's time to go to sleep miss"
"nooooo"
Ignoring Chemy's weak rejection Blanche carried her to a tent in the camp and gently placed her on a bed, tucking her in so she wouldn't be cold during the night
Chemy couldn't resist the tiredness and her eyes closed as she spoke incoherently a little to Blanche's amusement
"good night girl"
He said goodbye and walked away slowly so as not to wake her, but a soft murmur that only he caught with his sharp hearing stopped him at the entrance of the tent
"good night dad"
That day he found a family again
{end flashback}
And so his memories of her continued to pass and how he witnessed every step of her life
The first day at her school, when they started their training, the day she was named guardian, every day together in their home and everything that followed after
All the birthdays, their first and last love, the wedding, the moving, the first child, as each year she was maturing more until she was a responsible woman, the first daughter, getting older, seeing her children go down the path of life, getting older, getting sick, losing her husband and finally a couple of days ago… dying
{flashback}
-Blanche pov-
-two days ago- -Chemy 84 years old-
I walked into the hospital room and there she was, connected to the best medical equipment on the island, her heart rate was low according to the machines, but I didn't need to see that monitor
I could hear her heart straining with each beat, the moment I feared the most was approaching
Her once brown hair was now white like mine and her cloudy eyes looked at me with so much love when she recognized me with her blurry vision and her face formed a beautiful smile, she seemed so peaceful even though she knew her time was coming
Then she spoke to me with her aged and weak voice, almost whispering
"I'm glad you made it… old man"
That managed to form a small smile on my face, but the pressure in my chest didn't let me enjoy the joke
I tried to speak or make a joke in response, but I felt like if I opened my mouth my throat would just close up and my eyes would get wet
She looked at me standing in front of the bed in silence and I could see the understanding in her eyes
"don't worry, you don't have to say anything, we've talked too much the last few decades"
Then she gently laid back down, relaxing her body and I could hear her heartbeat getting weaker
"I'm really going to miss you old man, but it's my time, I'm going to see James, so don't be sad, I'll be fine"
I couldn't really speak
Her family arrived then, they looked at me fondly but they all had red eyes, sad about her departure, they gathered around the bed and I watched as she said goodbye to her children, her heart beating slower and slower
So much so that I feared that each heartbeat would be the last, as I stared at this family farewell I finally gathered the strength to say goodbye
With my feet so heavy that I felt that each step was a huge effort I approached her, she had already closed her eyes but her heart was still beating
I leaned down and caressed her white hair gently as if it were going to break and planted a soft kiss on her forehead, letting a couple of tears fall on her face
"Good night girl"
I walked away to the door of the room while I felt how her heartbeats were slowing down more and more and then I caught a weak murmur
"Good night dad"
There was no heartbeat to hear anymore
{End flashback}
Still lying on the grass I look to one side, the statues were of James and Chemy Mertens, she was buried next to her husband
"I don't want to remember"
A/N: Hi, my girlfriend lent me her notebook, for entering college, I love you, sorry for being an absent father
