Chapter 210: Chapter 210: Tony's Helplessness
"Extra! The United States Navy suffers catastrophic loss—three nuclear-powered aircraft carriers destroyed in under 30 minutes!"
"Has Wakanda shifted the balance of global power with advanced technology?"
"Modern-day Pearl Harbor? Is this the dawn of a new era of warfare?"
The devastating defeat of the U.S. Navy shook the world. Countries that had initially planned to join the assault on Wakanda hesitated, silenced by the overwhelming display of technological superiority. For some, the loss was a wake-up call: the sky was falling, and it was up to the United States to bear the brunt. For others, it was merely a shift in allegiances—loyalty was easily transferred to whoever wielded the bigger stick.
Unbeknownst to them, Erik Stevens saw them all as mere pawns in his larger game.
In Washington, chaos reigned.
"How could this happen?!" a senior official roared, slamming his fist on the table. "Half an hour? Our fleet wiped out in half an hour?!"
"It has to be superhumans," another chimed in. "There's no way Wakanda could pull this off alone. I'd bet it's those Sokovia Accords defectors—this has revenge written all over it."
"Contact Tony. Assemble the Avengers. We need to strike back immediately."
In the sleek offices of Stark Industries, Tony Stark ended a tense phone call with General Ross. Turning to face the remnants of the Avengers, his frustration was palpable. The once-mighty team had dwindled—only Vision, Rhodes, and himself remained, alongside Spider-Man, the youngest and least experienced among them.
Ross's parting words echoed in Tony's mind: "If you see Captain America, Bruce Banner, or any other fugitives, shoot them on sight."
Tony shook his head, disgusted. "Idiots," he muttered under his breath. "They don't even realize how bad this situation is."
He turned to Peter Parker, who stood eagerly nearby. "Go back to school, kid. This war isn't your fight."
"No way, Mr. Tony!" Peter protested. "I'm an Avenger now, remember? I even held my own against Captain America!"
Tony hesitated, his protective instincts clashing with Peter's earnest determination. Finally, he sighed. "Alright, kid. You're in. Just don't get cocky."
"Mr. Tony, ex-King T'Challa and Bruce Banner are at the gate," Friday announced.
Tony perked up, his mood lifting slightly. "Let them in!"
As T'Challa and Banner entered, Tony embraced Banner warmly. "Bruce! Long time no see."
"Not the kind of reunion I was hoping for," Banner replied with a grim smile. "But we don't have time to catch up."
T'Challa stepped forward, his tone grave. "Erik, my cousin, has seized the throne of Wakanda. He's taken control of the armed forces and plans to avenge the colonized nations with overwhelming technological force. He intends to treat the world as the colonizers once treated the indigenous peoples."
Tony flinched at the pointed comparison but said nothing.
"How much support do you have left?" Tony asked.
"Barely any," T'Challa admitted. "By Wakandan tradition, the people follow the reigning king. When Erik won the duel, I lost more than the throne—I lost my allies."
Banner scanned the room, frowning. "Where's Thor?"
Tony opened his mouth to reply, but Friday interrupted. "Mr. Tony, General Ross is calling."
"Connect."
Ross's image appeared on a nearby screen, his expression cold and unyielding. "Tony, we need you to deploy immediately—"
Ross's gaze shifted to Banner, narrowing with suspicion. "Banner," he said icily. "I remember your part in the island prison raid."
Banner stiffened, his unease growing. "General, that's not what this is about. We're here to deal with Wakanda—"
Ross cut him off sharply. "Do you think a global crisis absolves you of your crimes? You're still a wanted fugitive."
Turning back to Tony, Ross's tone hardened further. "Arrest him."
Banner's shoulders sagged as the realization set in. Thor's absence, the withdrawals from Earth—it all made sense now. The Avengers were no longer a united front, and Tony was left grappling with the impossible task of salvaging what remained.
