Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Fractures and Factions
The days that followed were a blur of training, discovery, and exhaustion. Kael proved to be an unrelenting mentor, pushing Ethan to master the Forge's abilities with precision and control. Each morning began with rigorous exercises to hone his focus, and each evening ended with his body aching and his mind buzzing with new knowledge.
"Again," Kael demanded, their silver eyes fixed on Ethan with unwavering intensity.
Ethan wiped the sweat from his brow and raised the gauntlet, focusing on the energy that coursed through it. He envisioned a weapon—a halberd this time—and willed the energy to form. Emerald light coalesced, shaping into a sleek, glowing blade attached to a long shaft. He hefted the weapon, its weight familiar despite being forged of pure energy.
"Better," Kael said, nodding. "But remember, it's not just about creating. The Forge responds to your emotions. Harness them, control them, and the constructs will follow."
Ethan exhaled, steadying his breathing. The emotional tether to the Forge was becoming clearer with each session, but it was also volatile. Moments of doubt or frustration often caused his constructs to waver, and the connection felt like balancing on the edge of a blade.
"What happens if I lose control?" he asked, his voice laced with curiosity and a hint of fear.
Kael's expression darkened. "Then the constructs can destabilize. At best, they'll collapse. At worst… they could backfire, causing destruction to yourself and those around you."
Ethan frowned, his grip tightening on the halberd. "So, no pressure then."
Kael's lips quirked into a rare smile. "You're improving, Ethan. But we must hurry. The fractures are spreading faster than anticipated. Soon, it won't just be creatures coming through. The rifts themselves will destabilize entire regions."
Ethan's gaze drifted to the horizon, where the jagged peaks of the Aetherial range met the swirling, fractured sky. He'd seen what a single rift could unleash, and the thought of countless others tearing through this world sent a chill down his spine.
By the end of the week, Kael deemed Ethan ready to accompany them on a mission to investigate a growing rift. The journey took them through a valley shrouded in mist, the air heavy with tension. The further they traveled, the more the land seemed to rebel against itself. Rocks floated unnaturally, suspended in the air, and the ground cracked beneath their feet, pulsing with faint energy.
"We're close," Kael said, their voice low. "Stay alert. These areas are unpredictable."
Ethan nodded, the gauntlet's glow intensifying as they neared their destination. The rift came into view moments later, a jagged tear in the fabric of reality. It pulsed with chaotic energy, and its edges seemed to ripple, as if resisting containment. Surrounding the rift were crystalline structures similar to those at the Peaks, though these were cracked and unstable.
Kael crouched behind a boulder, motioning for Ethan to do the same. "This rift is unstable. It's pulling energy from the environment, and the creatures it spawns will be more dangerous than what you've faced so far."
"Great," Ethan muttered. "So, what's the plan?"
Kael gestured to the crystalline structures. "Those spires are amplifying the rift's energy. If we can stabilize or destroy them, the rift should close. But it won't go quietly."
As if on cue, the rift surged, and two creatures emerged from its depths. They were tall, bipedal beings with bodies made of obsidian-like scales and glowing veins of red energy. Their movements were fluid but unnervingly deliberate, their crimson eyes locking onto the intruders.
Ethan raised his gauntlet, summoning a shield and a blade. "Looks like we've got company."
Kael stepped forward, their hands glowing with silver energy. "Keep them occupied while I deal with the spires."
Ethan nodded, charging toward the creatures. The first one lunged at him, its claws slashing through the air. He blocked with his shield, the impact reverberating through his arm. With a swift counterattack, he slashed at the creature's torso, his blade slicing through its outer layer. The beast roared, its veins flaring brighter.
The second creature circled around, forcing Ethan to stay on the defensive. He spun, blocking an incoming strike while lashing out with a burst of energy that sent the creature staggering. Adrenaline coursed through him as he fought, his movements becoming more fluid as the Forge's power flowed through him.
Kael, meanwhile, darted between the spires, their hands weaving intricate patterns in the air. Streams of silver energy lashed out, striking the crystalline structures. Each hit caused the rift to falter, its pulsing edges dimming slightly.
One of the creatures broke away from Ethan, charging toward Kael. "Kael, watch out!" Ethan shouted, throwing his blade with all his strength. The construct streaked through the air, impaling the creature before it could reach its target. It disintegrated in a burst of light, and Ethan summoned another blade, turning back to the remaining beast.
The final creature lunged at him, its claws glowing with energy. Ethan sidestepped and delivered a devastating upward slash, severing one of its arms. The beast roared in pain but continued its assault, its movements more erratic as it began to falter.
"Finish it, Ethan!" Kael called.
With a surge of determination, Ethan leaped forward, driving his blade into the creature's chest. The energy within the construct erupted, shattering the beast into fragments that dissolved into the air.
Ethan stumbled back, breathing hard as the rift began to shrink. Kael's efforts had destabilized the spires, and the tear in reality slowly sealed itself, leaving the valley eerily quiet.
Kael approached, their expression a mix of relief and approval. "Well done. You handled yourself better than I expected."
Ethan smirked. "Was that a compliment? I think I'm getting the hang of this."
Kael chuckled softly. "Don't get cocky. There's much more to learn, and the fractures are only going to get worse. But for now, you've taken an important step."
Ethan glanced at the gauntlet, its glow steady and reassuring. For the first time, he felt a sense of control—a sense that he could rise to the challenges ahead.
"One rift down," he said, his voice resolute. "Let's see what's next."
