I Became a Civil Servant Who Can Use Magic

Chapter 17 - The Emperor is a Son of a B**ch

A Partisan battalion-level base annihilated by just two people.

Thud.

At that place where even the last survivor fell powerlessly.
Only two people, Loen and Ead, were standing intact.

Ead looking around with indifferent eyes.

“For rats, they’re quite thorough with information control.”
“Indeed.”

Loen agreed with her words.

As expected of a resistance force engaging in guerrilla activities.
Despite raiding four bases with hundreds of stationed troops, they didn’t gain any significant results.

No, that’s not right. It’s not that there were no gains at all.

Flying aircraft carrier.
I know it’s a word that really doesn’t fit this world.
But there’s no other way to express it.

Anyway, while I was in charge of movement and defense, the Team Leader riding on my shoulders sent out dozens of flame swords to sweep away enemies – a very innovative combat method.
Knowing that this is extremely effective in battle.. it might be a sufficient gain?
That’s right, that’s right.
Loen nodded and crouched down again.

“Where should we go next?”
“This time, let’s go that way.”

Loen, carrying Ead, flew up into the air.
Then, exploding magical power at her feet, she shot forward quickly.

After a while.

This time, they discovered a Partisan base located near a mountain peak.

“The defenses seem better, and it looks larger than the previous bases.”
“Even so.”

They vaguely felt soldiers in the distance looking this way.
It was the same reaction as before.

What on earth is that.
Am I seeing things wrong?
That kind of reaction.

Loen stopped above the parade ground.
Followed by Ead’s flame sword launch.

Dozens of swords decorated the air as they charged towards the enemies.
Each sword moved as if it had its own will, piercing through the bodies of Partisan soldiers.

Ugh!
Argh!

The soldiers on guard duty outside the base were all annihilated in less than 10 seconds.
It was a natural result since they were ordinary soldiers, not knights or magicians.

“Loen, be careful. I sense several auras reaching 4-star level.”
“Yes.”

At Ead’s words, Loen started casting a magic shield to prepare for the next situation.

The forces outside the base were about fifty.
Compared to the previous base, there should still be hundreds of troops remaining inside the base.

Given that it’s quiet despite this commotion, they’re clearly preparing a counterattack.
If so…

Loen moved her body and flew near the base.
This was to hide her body on the base’s roof in case it became overwhelming to block with just the magic shield.

Of course, the Team Leader would help with defense, but just in case.

The surroundings that had suddenly become quiet.

Hundreds of Partisan forces and the Inspection Department party faced off across the stone building half-buried in the mountain.

“Tsk.”

Ead, who clicked her tongue briefly, stretched out her hand and shot some flame swords into the base.

Block with your bodies!
Deflect them!

The sound of swords clashing and soldiers’ screams mixed and came from inside the base.

“Here they come.”

Perhaps thinking they’d die either way if they stayed cooped up inside, soldiers poured out of the base in droves.
Among them, several knights in full armor rushed out but stopped in their tracks.

“In, in the air?”

While the knights were flustered, Ead swiftly stretched her hand towards them.

Swoosh- Clang!

Flame swords fired towards them.
After watching the knights rolling around and deflecting the swords for a moment.

Enemy magicians caught Loen’s eye.

Two magicians who had suddenly revealed themselves.
Escorted by soldiers, they finished casting and stretched their hands towards Loen.

Soon, magical beams erupted from their hands.
At the same time, a shield-shaped barrier was created in front of Loen’s eyes.

Loen twisted the angle of her magic shield to match the trajectory of the beams flying towards her.
Due to the exquisite angle twisting, the two beams bounced off the magic shield and flew into the empty sky.

“Crazy..”

Watching the magic they cast with all their might fly away in vain, a magician muttered as if dumbfounded.

Bang! Ratatat!

The following musket volley fire from the soldiers also bounced off the magic shield.

At that moment when all the enemies’ attack attempts failed.

Ead waved her hand and stabbed swords into the hearts of the dumbfounded magicians.
Then the knights and soldiers met their deaths one after another.

So this is why they say air superiority is important.
Loen, who was impressed by the efficiency of the flying aircraft carrier, slowly lowered her altitude and landed on the ground.

A little later.
The commander dragged out by Loen said.

“I will not divulge any information!!”
“…… Loen. Wait here.”
“Yes.”

Thirty minutes later.

“Ci-city.”
“City?”
“I only know that high-ranking officials have meetings in the city. I, I don’t know anything more than that.”
“Which city?”
“That’s…”
“It seems you still don’t understand the situation.”
“Wa-wait!”

Ead’s interrogation continued after that, but there was no additional information.
He really didn’t know anything more than that.

You should have said you didn’t know from the beginning.
Loen inwardly felt sorry for him.

Loen, who had completely forgotten that the commander had said he didn’t know from the beginning.

That’s how the interrogation ended.

The only meaningful information obtained from the commander was just one thing.

‘Partisan high-ranking officials sometimes have meetings in the city.’
That was all.

Ead crossed her arms and fell into thought.

Yes, we’ve done enough searching through forests and mountains. It wouldn’t be bad to stop by the city and look for those bastards.
There’s a high possibility they’re showing suspicious movements in the city as well.

“Let’s go to the city.”
“Oh, good idea.”

Flying through the sky to find bases and watching Ead’s flame swords slaughter enemies gets old after a couple of times.
Doing this for over a week makes one feel so stifled.

“We’ll disguise ourselves with new identities when we arrive in the city, keep that in mind.”
“In case those Partisan bastards recognize us and go into hiding?”
“Right. What will you use for your new name? I’ll go with Irche.”
“I’ll be… En.”

A tavern located somewhere in the big city of Westra.
At first glance, it looks like an ordinary tavern, but in fact, this place is close to a hideout frequently used by Partisans.

And now, in a corner of the tavern’s first floor, a young man quietly nodded.

The man’s identity was none other than Yorhan, the 6-star swordsman who held the position of 2nd Corps Commander of the Partisans.
Of royal descent from the old kingdom, he was a self-made man who rose to the position of corps commander at a young age.

After pondering for a while, he opened his mouth.

“Given the characteristics of the Partisans organized in cell structures, the possibility of information leaking out is slim. That means they directly searched the vast land thoroughly to find our bases and even annihilated them. What do you think?”

To Yorhan’s question, his brother Dares, who held the position of Chief of Staff, answered.

“It’s definitely not something done by mobilizing large-scale forces. If it were, we would have noticed. So I think it’s right to see it as a small elite unit composed of at least 5-star level or higher experts. Including a magician possessing flight magic.”

Yorhan nodded at Dares’ words.

“Hmm.”

The number of bases that have lost contact already exceeds five.
Moreover, there are no survivors.

There must have been at least hundreds of troops stationed at each base, it doesn’t make sense that there’s not a single survivor..

Then there’s only one answer.

A small elite unit composed of experts above a certain level, as Dares said.
All at least 5-star level. Maybe even higher.

At this point, a question arises.

‘Why on earth?’

The current troop losses are certainly painful.
However, it’s not enough to disrupt the plan.

The information known by the commanders of each base is also similar.
This is because information sharing is done sequentially in preparation for times like this.

So all they can obtain is vague level information.
In short, it’s a waste of time.

‘The enemies should know that fact too, right?’

Contrary to Yorhan’s thoughts, Loen didn’t know this fact.
That’s why she searched through mountains and forests like catching mice.
Thinking some information would come out if they raided bases..

The same goes for Inspection Team Leader Ead.
Most of the missions she had been in charge of were purging noble families.

In other words, since she rarely had to deal with Partisans, like Loen, she thought something would come out if they raided anything.

So it was natural that Yorhan couldn’t find an answer no matter how deeply he pondered.

Bang!

At the sound of the tavern’s main door opening loudly, the eyes of the people inside (mostly Partisans) turned to the door.

Yorhan also stopped thinking and looked towards the door.
There were two people standing there.

A woman with a cold impression, black hair and black eyes.
And a red-haired girl taking a confident stance.

Perhaps feeling burdened by the pouring gazes, the woman bowed her head and reprimanded the girl.

“I-Irche. If you open the door so loudly.”
“… Sorry, En.”

Yorhan narrowed his eyes.
Because he felt a strong sense of discomfort from their appearance.

Especially the black-haired woman.
Her attire is no different from that of ordinary civilian women.
However, her face… no matter how you look at it, she doesn’t seem like a commoner.

Moreover, she exuded an aura peculiar to nobles.
If others didn’t notice, Yorhan, the corps commander of the Partisans, did.

‘She’s a noble raised in at least a count’s family or higher.’

A noble lady in a tavern located in a corner and looking shabby on the outside?
And of all places, in a place used as a hideout by Partisans?

Yorhan smirked.
Do they take us for fools?

They clearly looked like agents sent by the imperial side to anyone’s eyes.

It’s become unfortunate.
Of all times, to crawl in here when I’m present.

Yorhan gave a signal with his eyes.

Nod.
Nod.

The knights assigned to guard the corps commander, including Chief of Staff Dares, quietly nodded.
Then they all quietly placed their hands on their sword hilts.

The tavern became quiet in an instant.

Even in such a situation, the woman and girl were just looking at the menu while sitting at a table.

‘Don’t they even know they’ve been discovered? How pathetic.’

While Yorhan was inwardly mocking them,
The red-haired girl turned her gaze and met his eyes.

“..”

Just as Yorhan was about to draw his sword due to an inexplicable uneasiness.
The woman opened her mouth.

“The Emperor.. son of a bitch.”

The air froze at her unrestrained words.
The red-haired girl was also startled and looked at her.

Yorhan, who was dumbfounded for a moment.
Soon took his hand off the sword hilt.

To dare utter curses about the Emperor in a big city of a grand duchy belonging to the empire!
Yorhan’s evaluation of her flipped 180 degrees.

From enemy.
To ally.
