I Became a Police Officer in a Superhero Genre

Chapter 54 - The Police in This World Vowed to Definitely Catch the Criminal(3)

There was a shocking incident that almost made me lose consciousness for a moment, but I somehow gathered my wits and moved my body.

After leaving the cafe, ‘Mina’ hid her face saying she had something to do. As if the work to be done now was solely my responsibility.

Well, fine. Originally, I was going to find that Dokkaebi bastard while ruining Park Jung-hoon son of a bitch’s attempt to manipulate me as he pleased.

This bottom-level investigation is work for the police, not a hero, after all.

Whatever purpose future ‘Mina’ had, I had no time to rest in order to save the current Mina.

Let’s organize the goals. First, pretend to listen to Park Jung-hoon bastard’s words while returning Mina’s injury to me.

Second, while carrying out the first goal, find where Dokkaebi and the kidnapped victims are.

Most of them are probably criminals too, but now is not the time for me to be picky about that. If I have to, it’s a situation where I need to ask for help whether it’s cats or dogs.

In a way, some people can be seen as victims like those who had to cooperate unwillingly because their families were kidnapped by North Korean spies before.

So getting help from Dokkaebi and other superpower users is not a problem strategically, even if it might be legally.

The original purpose was just to somehow get Dokkaebi to cooperate, but thanks to ‘Mina’, I also got a sense of how to persuade that bastard. Now all that’s left is to charge straight ahead.

After clearly organizing what I needed to do in my head, I trudged towards the Chosen Ones headquarters where Park Jung-hoon bastard was.

As I walked after throwing away all the shitty disguises I had done, it feels like more people are recognizing me today than usual.

There are even people who come to talk to me. But I ignore all that and silently head towards the Chosen Ones headquarters.

Entering a 4-story building that looked newly built, the first to greet me wasn’t an ordinary employee or receptionist, but the secretary who had been stuck right next to Park Jung-hoon at the coal moving volunteer site.

“Welcome. The representative has been waiting for you to come, Detective.”

The woman wearing a fitted women’s suit greeted me politely, bowing her waist as soon as she saw me.

Next to her were a large man who looked almost 3 meters tall and a person with some unknown object that looked like leaves growing on their face.

Well well. Looks like they saw me coming from somewhere and prepared.

Still, it seems they didn’t notice that I had followed them to the volunteer site, as the secretary’s eyes showed an unfamiliar look as if seeing someone she didn’t know.

I looked around pretending to loosen my neck. Gloomy gazes felt near building pillars or in places hard to see.

Those gazes were mixed with mockery as if looking at a monkey in a zoo cage rather than being wary of me. As if they knew why I came here.

They really wasted effort putting on this show.

I approached the secretary’s side, giving a sneer to the idiots who must have worked hard to prepare this production.

I stood in front of the secretary. Erasing expression from my face, I looked down at the woman a head shorter than me and said:

“Where is Representative Park Jung-hoon? I have something urgent to say.”

“Everyone who needs help looks for the representative.”

“Didn’t you cause trouble to make it necessary?”

As usual, my thoughts came out unfiltered. At my words, a slight anger clouded the secretary’s expressionless face.

As her eyes opened slightly, I saw that the secretary’s eyes had blue irises with geometric patterns that were difficult to describe drawn on them.

The moment I met those eyes, my body stiffened like stone and wouldn’t move.

Your body stiffens when you meet eyes, isn’t this that Greek-Roman mythology thing?

Isn’t this ability more suited for that snake-haired woman I met earlier?

While I was having such idle thoughts, the secretary slowly closed her eyes and spoke in an angry voice:

“I will not tolerate such outrageous words towards the representative. If you wish to keep that vile tongue of yours, I beg you to choose your words carefully before spitting them out of your mouth.”

Oh my, I didn’t know because there was nothing particularly strange when I looked into her background, but she was a person worthy of being in the secretary position.

I frowned at the unpleasant feeling of my whole body turning to stone. And while doing so, I let the secretary’s words go in one ear and out the other. I wasn’t scared of that ability, or the two hulks next to her.

Even if they look like they can’t help wanting to kill me, would they dare touch me when their representative said he was waiting for me to come?

Seeing my reaction as if ignoring her, the secretary twisted her face even more unpleasantly.

As she moved her mouth, I saw the hulks next to her clenching their fists as if about to pounce on me right away. But they stopped moving at the voice that was heard right after.

“Secretary Lee. I told you to escort him politely, what’s going on here?”

“Representative.”

Unlike before, Park Jung-hoon in a neat suit was walking down the stairs flapping his wings.

Thinking it’s fortunate that it’s not the eyebrow-furrowing Jesus cosplay, I glared at him.

Park Jung-hoon met my eyes and slightly raised the corners of his mouth. At that sight, I felt like blood vessels in my head were about to burst, but.

I rubbed my cheeks to try not to show that irritation and anger on my face as much as possible. He slowly walked in front of me, and detestably, with a sad face, said:

“I’m truly sorry, Detective. I found out what happened to you. I purely wanted to help you. But such a tragedy occurred. To think your acquaintance went through such a thing. I’m truly sorry.”

Park Jung-hoon bastard even sniffled while bowing his head.

But while doing so, the tips of his feet wiggled up and down like a dog that needs to pee.

It was at a level that couldn’t be seen unless looking closely, but what that behavior meant was probably excitement or mockery.

This bastard is mocking me with his face hidden after I came here. He must be dying of joy.

My teeth ground. If I were an ignorant civilian, I would have been wrapped in miserable pain until coming in front of this bastard.

I would have heard directly from Park Jung-hoon that if there’s temptation in my heart, an acquaintance would end up in the same state as him, and I would have been agonizing that it was my fault Mina got hurt.

And then I would come to this bastard who said he could help me with a mindset of grasping at straws, and now I’d be falling for this act and dancing in his palm.

I realized anew, but not surprisingly, that criminal bastards all have shitty personalities. Plus, they’re fucking terrible at acting too.

It’s hard to believe how they can do that while being human, but. It’s because they’re such bastards that they can laugh while hurting people.

“Detective. I understand you’re confused and bewildered now. But please listen. If you trust me and help me, there’s a way to save your acquaintance.”

He raised his waist and grabbed my hand with a face that looked more desperate at a glance.

It was such a pathetic play, and a vile trick. The malice disguised as goodwill and responsibility was chilling.

If I could, I wouldn’t want to associate with this kind for life, but. As long as I have something I must do as an adult in addition to wearing a uniform, I have to catch this son of a bitch.

So I have to fucking go along with this shitty play.

“…Tell me the way. I’ll do anything. Can you really save that kid?”

At my words, Park Jung-hoon bastard grins. He held both my hands and even spread the wings sprouting from his back.

As the bright lights on the ceiling intertwined with the huge wings, a scene that looked holy was created as if Park Jung-hoon bastard’s halo had descended.

Did this guy only think about this production after eating? And then

“Of course. But reversing the price of a miracle is not easy. You must also steel your heart, Detective.”

“…Yes. Just tell me what to do. I’ll do anything as long as you save that child.”

The price of a miracle, fuck. His fluent speech makes me even more angry.

My facial muscles were about to twist involuntarily, but I forcibly stiffened them and changed to a face that couldn’t hide tired and painful emotions as I held his hands in return.

Unpleasantness raced from my fingertips to my spine, but I endured it. The next time I grab this bastard’s hand will be when I put handcuffs on his wrists.

I looked at that bastard’s smiling face while making that vow- I don’t know where he got plastic surgery, but you can really tell he put implants in his nose, you son of a bitch.

After saying I would go along with Park Jung-hoon bastard’s tricks. He spoke as if he had been waiting:

“First, we must erase the temptation in your heart, Detective. For that, you need to overcome a few trials.”

He told me what I had to do while saying words I had expected.

It was nonsense telling me to go to a place in Gildong Ecology Park alone from day until sunset, revealing my sins and praying.

I thought he would tell me to move drugs, or kill someone, or use my position as a police officer to cover up some incident or something.

I tilted my head at this task that seemed like a quest you’d do right after creating a character in a game, but.

I scratched my chin, realizing that when drawing people into these things, it’s normal to start with something insignificant to lower their guard, and gradually make them cross lines.

I’ll have to be careful not to get swept up too, but – rather, because it’s such a simple quest, there are things I can check.

Whether these bastards keep following me. How far they monitor, how much they tolerate, etc.

I thought it was a perfect timing to check how they move and prepare for my smooth future activities.

Of course, this doesn’t mean I’ll just say fuck it and go drink. I should keep an appropriate line that’s hard to criticize.

But annoyingly, the coordinates given by KakaoTalk are terribly deep even within the park.

Seeing that they kindly explained how not to get caught by guards or cameras when leaving the made path.

These bastards. It seemed they had made this into a routine task they give to people like me, not something they’ve only done once or twice.

“Fuck, how did these bastards know I hate mountains.”

It’s not a mountain, but by my standards, if it’s hard to walk, has many trees and rocks, it’s a mountain.

Is it because it’s early dawn before the sun has risen? Just before entering a place overgrown with trees after passing a junkyard that gave off a creepy atmosphere like ghosts might appear,

Suddenly the phone in my pocket started ringing.

Thinking Park Jung-hoon bastard had found out my number and contacted me at this hour, I checked my phone with a disgusted face. Unexpectedly, the person contacting me was someone I knew.

Chief Kim. What’s with the sudden contact from someone who abandoned me and went to a general ward without contacting me even once?

“What’s up?”

The moment I answered the phone with half gladness, half uneasiness. The chief’s voice that came through wasn’t one with the expected gladness, but a thunderous shout.

“[Hey! Lee Mun-su! You crazy bastard! Where the hell did you go again?!]”

“Ah shit. My ears aren’t broken. What’s with this violence suddenly in broad daylight?”

“[Hey! Do you think I won’t get angry?!! The hospital says you were discharged! What discharge with that body condition? You crazy bastard!! Where are you?! They say you haven’t come to the station either! What crazy thing are you trying to do?!]”

“Ah-”

To find out I’m not in the hospital so quickly. I deliberately didn’t tell anyone and didn’t go to the station, how did this leak out?

Is it the hospital? Can’t hospitals even keep patient information confidential?

I grumbled, then decided to just say anything since I couldn’t tell this person what I was doing now either.

“What. I’m fine because luckily a close superpower user friend healed my body. Even though I’m healed, I’ve been having a hard time lately so I wanted to have some time alone. I forgot to tell the station. Chief, please take care of it.”

“[You’re lying! What close superpower user friend do you have!]”

This person?

My teeth ground at the chief’s appearance answering my words with terrible violence. But since I couldn’t deny it outright, I got angry in return.

“Ah, I don’t know! I’m in the middle of forest bathing now! Contact me later!”

“[Hey! Lee Mun-su!!!]”

I turn off the phone ignoring the chief’s shouts.

How did someone who should be resting well after moving to a general ward in the police hospital find out I was discharged?

Did he notice that Sai came to visit and disappeared?

-Anyway, it doesn’t matter. I stopped thinking there and headed towards my original destination along a path untouched by people.

After about 20 minutes? The location I finally reached after going while sweating profusely with all my strength drained.

Unlike the surroundings, that place looked touched by human hands. There was a Jesus statue about 2 meters tall, and a soft cushion placed in front of it.

Yeah, is this where I’m supposed to pray? I looked around in front of the statue.

I didn’t feel any presence or gazes, and no one followed me all the way here. There are CCTVs, but it’s a bit strange that there are no watchers at all.

I sat down on the cushion pretending to pray while trying to be wary of my surroundings-

“…?”

A slight pain felt the moment I grasped the cushion. No, it was hard to even call it pain.

It was at a level that could be brushed off as a short static electricity spark.

I could have just ignored it, but – I examined under the cushion.

Then I found a needle stuck in a position where it would inevitably prick a person when they sat down or touched it.

“What is this…?”

Why put something like this under the cushion? Did they put poison on it thinking of killing me?

But the needle is too small. Even if they put something on this, would it properly enter a person’s body? It was such a small needle.

While pondering what Park Jung-hoon bastard was thinking, suddenly drowsiness came over me. It was to an extent I absolutely couldn’t endure.

No fuck, I get a reaction right away from being pricked by such a small needle?

Does that make sense? Damn hero world. I cursed at the irrationality of this world while losing consciousness-

….

..
.

“To ignore the representative’s words and sleep like this. It seems the temptation inside you is really huge. At this rate, even the representative won’t be able to help you. Ha. Foolish person.”

When I regained consciousness, the sky was turning to dusk.

The secretary standing blocking the sunset was looking down at me with cold eyes.

I didn’t understand for a moment, but hearing what that bitch was saying, I could understand how the situation was unfolding.

These bastards were planning to subtly make me fail like this.

Then push me saying it was my fault, this won’t do, your acquaintance can’t be saved.

I understood why there was no one following me too. What would be the problem when I can’t do anything while sleeping?

Did these bastards graduate from a petty tricks department or something? I rubbed my cheeks and got up.

After pondering for a moment what to do while looking at the secretary cursing me beyond her eyelids, I soon grinned and said:

“I wasn’t sleeping.”

“Didn’t you just wake up with your eyes closed? Does a detective tell such lies?”

“I originally pray lying down after closing my eyes. The posture for praying is free, right?”

“…No, you didn’t get up even when I spoke to you?”

“Yeah, I heard you. But if I answer someone speaking while I’m praying, wouldn’t God get angry?”

“You were sleeping! Are you not a child anymore, why are you making such excuses?!”
“It’s not an excuse, it’s the truth.”
“Eek…!!!”

The secretary woman ground her teeth and took out her phone, shoving it in my face.
Saying you were sleeping scratching your belly, she showed me a photo of me lying down sleeping at a time when the sun was still high in the sky.

A photo that looked like a screenshot from the CCTV footage I had checked.

I looked at that photo and answered that I was caught while inwardly laughing.

For now, there are two things I’ve found out.

This ecology park is in the hands of those Chosen Ones bastards. And because this secretary bitch has quite a dirty personality, she reacts when lightly provoked.

The former isn’t very useful, but the latter is content that will be helpful for investigating going forward.

Aside from being helpful, it seems like it would be fun to torment a bastard with such interesting reactions. I thought that while quietly laughing.
