Chapter 143: Objective Complete

Just as the dart was fired, a blur intercepted its path. August appeared from the shadows with his dagger slicing through the air and his hands outstretched.

His swing immediately deflected the dart mid-flight. The poison-coated tip spun towards the left and embedded itself harmlessly into the stone wall behind the throne.

The leader rose to his feet as his eyes narrowed. "Aleman… You're late."

"I had a detour," August replied with a calm tone. He turned toward the rival assassin, who stepped from the shadows with daggers drawn.

"So, you made it back," the rival assassin sneered. "I was wondering if you'd be too busy chasing Lucas to save your precious master."

"Sorry to disappoint," August held his daggers forward as he took a stance. "But your mission ends here."

The rival assassin lunged at him instantly but August dashed towards the side and then behind him, striking with a swift slash. The rival spun, blocking the attack with his daggers, and countered with a flurry of strikes that forced August to retreat.

"You're good," the rival smirked. "But I'm better."

"Let's find out," August replied while activating Shadow Dance.

[ Shadow Dance Has Been Activated ]

Dark ghostly decoys of himself surrounded the rival, each attacking from a different angle but it was a fluke since only one was real.

The rival assassin snarled and slashed through the decoys with expert precision. "Tricks won't save you!"

August used the distraction to close the distance swinging the dagger from a blind spot.

The rival assassin surprisingly parried the attack but misjudged August's speed. A quick feint left him exposed, and August's blade found its mark, slashing across his ribs.

The rival assassin staggered while clutching his side. "You little..."

He activated a skill, disappearing into the shadows. August felt the shift in the air and activated Stealth, vanishing as well. The room fell silent, leaving only the sound of faint torch crackles.

They circled each other invisibly, each waiting for the other to make a move. August's keen instincts alerted him just in time as the rival assassin struck from above, aiming daggers at his neck.

He rolled to the side and struck out as well.

The fight began to drag out, becoming one where a single person couldn't relent in the slightest or it would lead to their loss.

August didn't try to use his mage abilities or the fight would have long ended. He didn't want to risk failing the test so he made sure to rely only on his assassin skills but this battle was pushing him to his limits.

Finally, August saw his opening. The rival assassin overextended on a strike, giving August the chance to drive his dagger deep into his chest.

The rival gasped as blood trickled from his lips while he collapsed to the ground. "Guess… you were better…"

August knelt beside him before pulling his dagger free. "No hard feelings. You should've stayed out of my way."

The leader of the organization stepped forward. "You did well, Aleman. But your mission isn't over yet."

August nodded while moving toward the exit. "I know. Lucas is next."

---

With the rival assassin out of the way, August's path to Lucas was clear. He retraced his steps to the last known location of the target.

The tavern where Lucas had last been seen was now deserted, but fresh tracks in the dirt told August exactly where to go.

Following the trail, August arrived at an abandoned warehouse near the edge of the city. Inside, Lucas paced nervously, flanked by two guards.

August activated Stealth, slipping into the shadows as he moved closer. He studied the guards' movements, noting their patterns.

In the next moment, he activated dual wielding, taking them down in a flurry of strikes before they could react.

Lucas spun around in fear. "No! Stay back!"

August stepped forward with gleaming daggers. "It's over, Lucas."

The target lunged for a hidden blade, but August was faster.

He swooshed to Lucas's back and delivered a hidden strike. His blade pierced Lucas's heart from behind, causing blood to splurge out like a fountain.

The target collapsed.

Meanwhile, in the battle against Malrik, the players were still defending the mage.

Midway through the defense, an undead mage appeared.

Its skeletal hands were enveloped with dark energy. It raised its staff, aiming a spell directly at Dorian.

"Someone stop that thing!" a knight shouted.

Ezran's eyes widened as he realized he was the closest. He gulped, gathering every ounce of courage he had. "Okay, okay… you can do this, Ezran…"

He conjured a massive fireball... the largest he'd ever attempted, and hurled it at the undead mage. The spell struck, engulfing the creature in flames and reducing it to ash.

Lilo whistled from a distance. "Not bad, Ezran! Maybe you're not completely hopeless after all!"

"Thanks… I think," he muttered while wiping sweat from his brow.

As the clock ticked down to the final minute, the undead redoubled their efforts. The monolith pulsed violently, and the shadowy beings grew more aggressive, clawing at the knights and players alike.

Dorian's chanting grew louder and the golden runes spun faster around him.

He tried to maintain a calm look but his face betrayed the strain of conjuring such a powerful spell.

"Hold the line!" he bellowed. "Do not falter!"

Lilo had been firing shots upon shots upon shots but before she knew it, she found herself surrounded by a group of skeletal warriors in a flash. "Boris! A little help here?"

She couldn't exactly deal with targets properly in close-quarter combats.

Boris charged in with a laugh as his axe cleaved through the skeletons. "I've got your back, Lilo!"
