Chapter 218: Last Five
Victor proceeded to grab the hilt of his sword, unstrap it from his back and swing downward while the blade was still inside the sheath.
The sheathed swing collided with the storm of phantom blades mid-air and split them all in a cascading blast of energy.
A violet arc tore through the air like a divine crescent, cutting the entire skill in two and sending shockwaves across the platform.
Kleon's technique shattered with a deafening crack.
"W-what?" Kleon gasped.
The crowd let out a collective gasp as silence followed like a stunned aftershock.
Victor exhaled and then activated Wind Dash...
A burst of wind swept out from his position as he vanished.
The next instant, he was in front of Kleon with his hand thrusting forth.
CRACK!
A palm strike slammed into Kleon's chest like a thunderclap, causing compressed qi to explode outward. Kleon's body lifted off the ground, launched clear off the stage while spinning mid-air before crashing into the barrier wall.
The force echoed through the arena.
The match was over.
> [Victor Revenant wins.]
The crowd went berserk.
Screams, cheers, applause. Students jumped to their feet. Even instructors watching from the upper deck nodded with interest.
Victor simply turned and walked off the stage while brushing imaginary dust from his sleeve.
Reed was already clapping when Victor returned to his seat.
"Okay, that was ridiculous. Like, god-tier ridiculous."
"Your fight wasn't too bad either," Victor replied.
"I had to get beat up first to win," Reed groaned. "You just... strolled through."
Selene smirked. "Not surprised."
---
Across the arena, the Mage Division was holding its own duels. Elemental storms clashed with arcane shields.
One mage created a miniature gravity field to disrupt another's flowcasting. The match ended when one conjured a meteor projection—only to have it redirected back at her by a precise mana fold technique.
In the Assassin Division, battles were faster and quieter with flashes of shadow, illusion breaks as well as blades coated with energy.
One student even used a displacement skill to swap positions mid-strike, faking out his opponent and landing a critical hit.
The Summoners had summoned magical wolves, spirits, and even a baby thunder drake. It roared so loud it made the nearby platform tremble.
The competition was heating up across all fronts.
The crowd was excitedly focusing on the section they had interest in as the matches continued.
In the warriors section, Warrior after warrior clashed on the arena platform.
Some won while others collapsed in exhaustion or defeat.
Victor had already made his way back to his seat as the afterimage of his match lingered in the minds of many.
Yet, despite his display, murmurs drifted through the crowd.
"He's good, but Elyra? She's on another level."
"I even dropped out of the competition because of Elyra..."
"Same here buddy.... Same here..."
Victor dropped into his seat beside Selene, Reed, and Danny. Just as he sat, he noticed a small folded note tucked beneath his water bottle. His eyes narrowed as he picked it up and unfolded it.
"Meet me at the old eastern hub after today's battles. It's important. – Amara."
Selene leaned over and peeked. Her eyes immediately sharpened. "You don't actually plan on going to meet her, do you?"
Victor didn't respond right away.
"Seriously, Victor," Selene frowned. "She practically destroyed your reputation. You think one note is enough to make that disappear?"
Danny shifted uncomfortably while glancing between them. "I mean... we did all know her before the Academy. She's not evil. Just... maybe confused."
Victor folded the note again and tucked it into his pocket. "She mentioned something about the fire. If she knows anything at all, it could be important. I'll hear her out."
Selene clicked her tongue and leaned back with her arms crossed. She looked visibly annoyed but said nothing more.
The warrior matches continued.
A massive 6'7 girl with two battleaxes fought a nimble short-statured warrior who used acrobatics to avoid every blow.
Despite the agility, a single mistake saw him trapped in a corner, where a sweeping strike ended the match in a clean KO. Gasps and cheers filled the arena.
Soon, Elyra Vorn was called again.
The crowd immediately stirred, and chants of her name broke out before she even stepped on stage.
Her green skin glittered smoothly as she stepped into the platform. The moment she unsheathed her sword, everyone fell silent in anticipation.
Her opponent who was a solid Level 19 warrior known for his defensive techniques, braced himself behind a large shield laced with mana engravings.
"You may be strong but when you're unable to get through my defenses, your mana will eventually run out," Timothy grinned confidently.
Elyra simply walked forward with her signature cold eyes.
With a flash of green and silver, her sword glowed briefly, and she struck once.
BOOM!
The shield cracked and then shattered.
Her opponent was thrown off his feet and sent skidding across the arena floor before slamming into the barrier wall.
He groaned and instantly fell unconscious.
Another single-hit victory.
The crowd erupted.
"She's insane!"
"She didn't even activate a skill!"
"She's already the winner, let's be honest!"
Elyra turned and exited the stage casually.
Reed leaned over and whistled. "Damn... how do I top that?"
Victor smirked. "Try not getting beat up in the first ten seconds this time."
Reed groaned dramatically. "No promises."
When his name was called, Reed stood and jogged toward the platform.
His opponent was a stern-faced girl wielding a long spear with a powerful stance.
The moment the match began, she dashed forward while unleashing rapid precision thrusts.
Reed bobbed and weaved, narrowly dodging. He activated Steelwave Stance, one of his newly unlocked warrior skills, and used a short burst of force to knock her back. She retaliated with a spinning spear strike that nearly disarmed him.
"Oof," Selene muttered. "He's gonna need to get serious."
Reed seemed to finally wake up as his posture tightened. He roared and activated one of his powerful skills.
He leapt into the air and spun his sword like a cyclone.
The strike collided with her defense, sending her sliding backward. Her feet tried to hold ground, but Reed followed up with a clean shoulder bash that knocked her weapon from her grip.
In the next instant, he pressed his blade to her neck, drawing a bit of blood.
Victory: Reed!
He walked back with a triumphant grin and slumped into his seat. "And that… is how you don't die."
"Not bad," Victor said with a small nod.
A few more matches followed. The competition was fierce, but none matched the spectacle of Elyra's or Victor's battles.
Finally, Victor's name echoed once more.
His next opponent was a Level 20 warrior named Hanzo Maek. Hanzo was known for his brutal close-range style and heavy armor.
As he walked to the arena, cheers of support rained from his classmates.
Victor stepped onto the field quietly.
The match began.
Hanzo charged immediately while wielding a heavy hammer.
Victor slid underneath the attack, causing his fingers to brush the ground for balance as he pivoted behind Hanzo.
A palm strike to the back sent Hanzo strutting forward.
Hanzo grunted and swung again. Victor twisted to the side and countered with a sweep, knocking Hanzo off balance.
But Hanzo recovered quickly and activated a skill.
> [Warrior Skill: Iron Quake Smash]
His hammer struck the ground with a thunderous blast that created a small shockwave.
Victor leapt above the shockwave with qi dancing around his ankles. He descended with his sheathed blade unstrapped, and tapped Hanzo on the shoulder with a single qi-infused strike.
The moment the sheathed blade collided with Hanzo's shoulder, he stumbled.
It felt like the weight of more than ten boulders had been stacked upon him as the ground cracked beneath him.
He dropped his hammer and fell to his knees in pain.
Victor landed and sent him flying with a single kick.
Victory: Victor Revenant!
The crowd clapped, but the cheers weren't as loud.
"He's good... but still not on Elyra's level."
"Yeah, he hasn't used anything flashy."
"That guy Zack from the other battle was more intense."
The spectators began ranking the warriors in their minds.
1st: Elyra Vorn
2nd: Zack Morlen
3rd: Victor Revenant
4th: Reed
However, only five competitors were left now.
The announcer stepped onto the platform. "That concludes today's versus matches for the Warrior Division. Tomorrow, Thursday, the final phase will commence. Only one shall emerge as the Legacy Weapon Champion!"
As the crowd began to disperse, Victor sat quietly while staring at the note Amara left him.
Tomorrow, the final battle awaited.
But tonight... he had a meeting to attend.
Evening draped its golden veil across the Awakened Academy as Victor walked along one of the paths leading to a secluded area he was meant to meet Amara.
The note Amara left him earlier was clenched in his hand. Selene walked beside him with her arms folded and a look of displeasure on her face.
"You really still decided to meet her," Selene voiced with a flat tone.
Victor sighed. "She said it's about the fire, Selene. If she knows something important, I have to hear it."
"She's already done enough," Selene muttered while glaring ahead. "Some nerve she's got, asking for a private meeting."
