Chapter 17: This Is How We Public Morals Committee Members Do Things
The duties of the Public Morals Committee were quite simple: conducting routine inspections to identify and address any violations on campus. Naturally, after joining the committee, Ronan needed to familiarize himself with the work.
"As a newcomer, you should follow us and observe how we handle things. Once you get the hang of it, it'll be smooth sailing for you."
"Got it," Ronan replied, standing behind Iino Miko.
The targets of the Public Morals Committee's inspections generally fell into three categories: those carrying contraband, those vandalizing school property, and those engaging in shameless public displays of affection.
As he followed behind Miko, Ronan noticed the whispers and side glances from students in the hallway as she passed by.
"Ugh, it's the Public Morals Committee again."
"She's from Class 1-B, right? Iino Miko, I think."
"How annoying."
"Always sticking her nose into other people's business…"
Ronan: "…"
Kobachi leaned in and whispered to him, "You'll have to get used to this now that you're part of the committee."
"Is being in the Public Morals Committee really this tough?"
"Of course. Doing this job means making a lot of enemies."
"Hmm… So can I make them shut up?"
"What do you plan to do?"
"Beat them up."
"Don't be so violent. Public Morals Committee members can't go around picking fights."
"Tch."
Knock, knock, knock!
Ahead of them, Miko stopped in front of a classroom door and knocked firmly.
"Open up. Routine inspection."
"…"
There was no response from inside the room. Miko frowned and turned the doorknob, only to find that it was locked.
"…Damn it."
Ronan turned to Kobachi and asked, "What's going on here?"
"This happens all the time," Kobachi replied, adjusting her glasses.
"During routine inspections, if a club is doing something they shouldn't be, they usually lock the door to avoid getting caught. Miko has already run into this issue several times."
"I see."
Ronan nodded in understanding.
More and more students were passing by, and some even turned their heads to watch, seemingly enjoying Miko's predicament.
It was clear that Miko was not well-liked in this school.
Standing in front of the locked door, her face was already turning a bit red.
Ronan asked, "Just to clarify, when students lock the door, what are they usually doing inside?"
"Reading manga."
"Uh-huh."
"Playing video games."
"Uh-huh."
"Or couples might be inside doing something shameless."
"Give me five minutes."
Ronan said this to Kobachi before immediately dashing toward the nearby stairwell.
Miko turned her head to watch Ronan's hurried departure and asked Kobachi, "Where is he going?"
"He said to wait five minutes."
"Oh…"
Though she had no idea what Ronan was planning, Miko decided to stay put and wait for his return.
It didn't take long—just around five minutes…
Crash!
Suddenly, the sound of shattering glass erupted from the locked room, followed by a series of panicked shouts:
"Hey! Who are you!?"
"What are you doing!?"
"No, stop!!"
There was also a loud thud as something—or someone—hit the floor.
Miko: "…"
Kobachi: "Looks like the problem's been solved."
Click.
The locked door swung open from the inside, and Ronan stepped out, looking completely unfazed.
"Mission accomplished," he announced to Miko and Kobachi.
The moment Ronan opened the door, Miko rushed inside—only to find a group of boys collapsed on the floor, their hands tied behind their backs. On the desk in front of them was a pile of inappropriate magazines.
"…What exactly did you do?"
"I spent two minutes retrieving my rappelling gear from my storage room, three minutes climbing to the rooftop to set up the rope, then rappelled down to their window, kicked in the glass, and subdued everyone inside."
"…Subdued?"
"Anyway, the inspection can proceed now. The contraband magazines are all on the desk."
"…"
...
"Tch, why do I have to write a self-reflection too?"
"You caused such a huge scene that the entire school knows about it now."
Earlier, countless students on the school field had witnessed Ronan rappelling down from the rooftop with a rope, smashing the third-floor classroom window, and then tying up the students inside before confiscating their contraband items.
As a result, Miko had scolded him thoroughly before dragging him to office for another round of reprimands. Not only was he forced to write a self-reflection, but his tactical rope was also confiscated.
Now, the entire school knew that the first-year Public Morals Committee had a complete lunatic among its ranks.
"I was merely enforcing school rules with strict discipline."
"That was the problem! Seriously, I'm surprised Iino didn't revoke your position as a Public Morals Committee member," Ishigami said, wiping some cold sweat from his forehead.
"Of course she didn't. Because my actions taught those rule-breaking students a valuable lesson—defying the Public Morals Committee leads only to ruin."
"You sound exactly like a corrupt cop from an action movie."
"What they think doesn't concern me."
As Ronan continued writing his self-reflection, a sharp gleam flickered in his eyes.
"I will make sure every student in this school understands—there is no good ending for early romance."
"You're a tyrant! Is this some personal vendetta!?"
"This is for the sake of public morals. You should try to understand me."
"I don't understand you at all!"
Ishigami had come to a realization—his new friend might actually be a bit unhinged.
"Ishigami, you haven't joined a club yet, have you?"
A girl's voice called out from behind him, making him turn around immediately.
A ponytailed girl smiled at him.
"Oh, Ootomo… No, I haven't joined a club," he replied.
"Being in the 'Go-Home Club' all the time isn't great, you know? You should take the opportunity to join a club and enjoy the high school experience," she said with a warm smile.
"You have a point."
Ishigami found himself blushing slightly as he spoke to her.
Meanwhile, Ronan didn't even glance their way. He remained completely focused, scribbling furiously on his self-reflection.
"Alright then, Hikari and I will be going now."
"Okay…"
Ishigami watched as the girl and the boy next to her left the classroom. Even after they had disappeared from sight, his gaze lingered on the door.
"Who was that girl?" Ronan asked casually while still writing.
"That's Ootomo Kyoko. The guy is Ogino Ko. They're both our classmates… You should at least try to remember the names of the people in our class."
"It's pointless. We'll be split into different classes in second year anyway. No need to waste brain cells on it."
"…"
Just then, Ronan suddenly stopped writing. He turned his head toward the door where the two had just left.
"Are those two dating?"
"Yeah… I guess so. It's kinda enviable," Ishigami muttered.
"Understood."
Without another word, Ronan stood up and walked toward the door.
"For the sake of public morals, I'll deal with them right now."
"STOP RIGHT THERE!!"
