Chapter 6: Starlight City
The city was huge! Way bigger than in the game. Zero got off from the wolf and inspected the city. It was already night, so sneaking in shouldn't be too much of an issue.
He cast a glance at the wolf and waved it away, he had kept his promise of letting it live. It was merely a wolf and killing it was pointless.
He approached the city and saw 2 guards in front of the entrance. They weren't here in the game either. Starlight city was mostly a place you would rob for gold, why was it a proper location all of a sudden?
Zero took out his scythe and walked up to the entrance. The guards raised their spears and inspected the young man in front of them. They sighed in relief once they saw it was just another one of these "heroes".
Some random day a bunch of them just appeared in the middle of Starlight city, and an image of a goddess appeared in the sky, preaching something about how they will save the world.
Some of them died already, others were used as slaves, and some managed to become knights. This one seemed to be a knight, considering he is carrying a weapon.
"Hey, you! Weapons are not allowed in the city, put it away!" the guard shouted at Zero.
Zero didn't even spare a glance at the guard, he walked past them, he wanted to quickly rest up, buy a bunch of food, and head out straight away.
The guard was enraged, he has been ignored! "How dare some prick from another world ignore me!" he shouted as he strikes at Zero.
Zero was surprised that players were being treated that way, seems like the majority of them were completely clueless... good.
Zero beheaded the 2 guards with a swoop. He didn't pay any attention to them, they were like insects. He simply walked on.
It was still dark and nobody saw him entering except these 2, so nobody would know who it was, as for consequences, he didn't care about that. After all, he had seen this city as nothing but a gold pouch he could simply take.
He found a tavern in which there were quite a lot of people. He went inside still holding his scythe from which blood was dripping.
What a horrific sight! Had the reaper come for them? The waitress looked him in the eyes, they were void of all emotion. A shiver ran down her spine, who is that?
Zero ignored all the stares of the guests and walked over to the counter. "Give me something worth eating, and a room." he tossed over some coins he had taken from the two humans he killed in the forest.
He didn't know whether this was enough or not, if not he would "kindly" ask someone to lend him some.
The waitress glanced at him and then at the coins, she didn't say anything. She simply gave Zero a key and pointed at a staircase.
"Food?" he asked, he was quite hungry after all this time. The girl said indifferently "30 minutes."
Zero nodded and went to his room, what a good worker, quick and on point.
He had his meal and a good night rest, he woke up in the morning and went out to get some food.
The whole city was talking about the death of two guards, everybody already knew that someone or something killed the guards at the entrance. He didn't care, he had to go and take the free gold pouch, so he could get food easily.
He was approaching the kings palace, something weird fell into his view, unknown entities.
Two women that had the same clothing as the goddesses statue, they had a weird aura around them.
It seems like some things did change after all. These women seemed powerful, they might be able to actually offer him some competition if they both jumped him at once.
He thought about it, in the game the gods weren't actually entities you could interact with, they just "existed" but it seemed that in this world, the gods were actually present, and were interfering with it quite a bit.
This piqued his interest, something he didn't already do, he should go meet these gods... a creepy smile appeared on his face.
Certain entities felt a chill down their spine, what was that?
He decided to explore a bit, he walked up to these women, his scythe still in his hand.
The women stared at him with coldness, so did he, they stared at each other for a minute... awkward...
Soon enough one woman spoke up "Want something, child?" this tone was cold and somewhat contemptuous.
"Who are you?" Zero asked completely ignoring her tone, he was curious.
The woman was baffled, you don't know who I am? Is that why you are so calm? "I'm a gods messenger. I work for the church, now will you show some manners?"
He looked at her for a moment longer, and just turned around and left. What a boring person, merely a worker of a church.
The woman frowned but didn't say anything else, she was higher than that, why would she punish someone ignorant?
Zero set out to find this church she was talking about, there were no churches in the game. Something new!
A glimpse of happiness flashed in his eyes, did they update the game? New content? More achievements???
He had felt his will to live returning, he had something to do in this world!
Oop, someone bumped into him, it was a girl in awful condition. She seemed to be a slave. That suddenly jerked him out of his excitement, and he remembered why he even came here in the first place.
A fat man approached him, a noble? He had expensive fancy clothes. "Sorry young man, these slaves don't know how to behave these days" the fat man smiled.
Zero nodded, and went past them. This was none of his business. It's not like he is some hero from a novel, that would fight the world for a random slave.
He went out of the city, the guards didn't stop him. Either they already found a scapegoat to blame the two deaths on, or they simply didn't care. Well neither did he, this had spared him two murders.
He headed towards the biggest tree, this tree was home to some special monsters and also the item he wanted to get before everyone else.
This item would make leveling up way more useful.
