Chapter 207
207. The Effort You Put In Can Be Contagious, Isn’t It?
At Kyle Academy, physical education teaches children how to handle swords and other skills so they can survive even in the frontier.
Experienced adventurers are called in as teachers to provide practical training.
Myrna and Feidar showed enthusiasm, but she was ordered to run laps around the field.
Both of them can use a bit of magic, so they voiced their complaints.
The adventurer acting as the teacher had a vein pop on his forehead.
“You two lack basic physical strength! At the very least, you should be able to run a lap around the field without getting out of breath before you can even think about combat training!”
At this very reasonable remark, the two reluctantly started running, but Myrna would run a few steps, get out of breath, and then run a few more steps while panting heavily. She might as well have walked—it would’ve been faster.
Feidar wasn’t as bad, but after running a lap around Kyle Academy’s large field, he was so out of breath he nearly collapsed.
Of course, both of them had stamina potions, but due to the nature of potions, overexertion still leads to fatigue. Running at full speed was like pushing themselves to their absolute limit, so they quickly tired out.
That’s why Myrna found it less tiring to walk, as she could cover longer distances that way.
In stark contrast to the two, the Kendall siblings were engaged in an intense mock battle in the center of the field.
The adventurers clicked their tongues and shouted.
“Dammit! Now I understand why the academy only called high-ranking adventurers before!”
The leader of the adventurers tried to knock Ed’s sword aside and target the rear guard, but he was immediately deterred by Cyca’s arrows, leaving the Kendall siblings’ formation unbroken.
This adventurer group had recently arrived in Golden Dawn.
Most of the older adventurers had volunteered as militia, drastically reducing the number of adventurers available to come to the academy. As a result, the task fell to newer parties who had just arrived in Golden Dawn, and they were inwardly cursing their luck.
Since coming to this city, they had seen many things that defied common sense, but the children before them took the cake.
They were unleashing sword techniques and magic non-stop, despite not even having crests. It was beyond abnormal.
They had heard that there were promising children in the adventurer’s guild, but their strength was far beyond what they had imagined.
“Hey, onii-chan, no need to hold back! We’ve got plenty of healing potions here!”
Ed’s shout was followed by Wamika.
“And I’ve got healing magic too~”
“Yeah! We’re counting on you!”
The children attacked with complete seriousness, unafraid of getting hurt. The adventurers, who had thought they could handle them with wooden swords, quickly had to switch to their real weapons to keep up.
On top of that, even if they went all out, the children’s clothes were a real pain.
They looked ordinary, but whatever they were made of, blades couldn’t cut through them.
“Brace yourselves for some bruises!”
The adventurers shouted in frustration.
“That’s what we want!”
Ed, with the speed, power, and toughness unique to beastmen, charged at them. The adventurers had no room to hold back just because he was a child.
(Are those clothes made with reinforced thread? The kind only sold in this city? What the hell is up with this place!?)
In the end, the training turned into a life-and-death struggle that went far beyond what was intended.
Now, of course, the children didn’t end up going to war, but they had a significant impact on the adventurers who hadn’t volunteered as militia because they didn’t feel strongly about Golden Dawn.
With war preparations underway, there was never enough medicinal herbs or magic stones. Requests for these materials flooded the adventurer’s guild.
The burden fell on the adventurers who hadn’t joined the militia, most of whom were newcomers to Golden Dawn.
It was easy to forget because the city itself was peaceful, but the surrounding area was an extremely dangerous frontier. Even gathering herbs required considerable skill.
Amidst all this, training with the children became popular, as it allowed adventurers to hone their skills while being supplied with potions and other resources. The participating parties steadily grew stronger.
Thanks to this, the adventurer’s guild managed to handle tasks like gathering materials for the production guilds and clearing monsters from the roads.
At first glance, the Kendall siblings’ actions seemed pointless, but in reality, they were making a significant contribution to the territory.
Of course.
The siblings themselves were unaware of this and spent their time idling at the orphanage with their followers after the war broke out.
◆
The war took a major turn due to the betrayal of Masamune St. Clair, one of the three great families of the Mizuho Divine Nation.
Masamune and a few samurai successfully landed a large number of imperial soldiers on the bridge. Standing next to Masamune was a mysterious bee-like demi-human.
“Man, not being able to fly is such a pain.”
The bee-man said, glancing at the imperial soldiers lined up behind him.
“Hey, human. If we cross this bridge, we’ll reach Golden Dawn, right?”
“Yeah.”
“But this bridge pisses me off.”
“More importantly, about my family—”
“Don’t worry. We’ll properly elevate your family to nobility within the empire.”
“Understood.”
“Alright, no point standing around here. Let’s move out.”
And so, the imperial army began its massive advance across the Dawn Bridge.
This was partly due to the bridge’s enormous size.
A normal stone bridge would never have allowed tens of thousands of soldiers to land on it.
After two days, the imperial army finally reached Golden Dawn, but the soldiers were stunned by its grandeur.
“What the hell? How is this city so huge?”
“That fort at the edge of the bridge looks like a doghouse compared to this!”
“Those walls are insane! They’re way too high!”
“Look! There’s a massive waterwheel upstream! If we destroy that, they’ll run out of water and dry up!”
“Are you an idiot? They’ve got reserves in the city, and there’s a gate on the other side of the bridge. They can resupply as much as they want. Besides, with the amount of food we’ve brought, we’ll run out before they do.”
The soldiers couldn’t stop murmuring as they gazed at Golden Dawn’s towering city walls and castle walls, which loomed like mountains.
Despite being positioned out of range of projectiles and magic, they couldn’t grasp the full scale of the enemy’s city. The sheer terror of it was beyond imagination.
Beyond the bridge was a large plaza, spacious enough to hold the entire imperial army.
Three sides of the plaza were blocked by walls, and the front was a massive gate, firmly shut.
What unnerved the imperial army the most was the silence. Despite the massive army right at their doorstep, Golden Dawn’s castle showed no reaction whatsoever.
Ignoring the soldiers’ unease, the bee-man spoke up.
“Alright then, let’s slaughter all these humans.”
A tense atmosphere immediately filled the imperial army. They had marched a long way to get here. They couldn’t return empty-handed. That thought alone was barely keeping their morale afloat. Plus, if they won, they could plunder to their hearts’ content. Given the size of the city, even the lowest-ranking soldiers would get their share.
Of course, that was if they won.
Of course, there was no reason they could win. Not a shred of one.
