Chapter 89: The Secretary Who Delivered Herself
The next morning, Su Ye woke up a little earlier than usual.
It had been almost a month since Su Ye took over the shares from Old Su, but aside from inheriting the Batcave, he hadn't done much else.
Today, he planned to visit Oscorp to get a closer look at how a $200 billion company operated. Old Su was still waiting for him to return and take over their family's small workshop.
If he went back someday knowing nothing, clueless about everything, what was the point of studying abroad? Just to earn the title of a "sea turtle" (returnee)?
But nowadays, good-for-nothing sea turtles were everywhere, and the title didn't carry much weight anymore.
It was around 7 a.m., and downstairs, the landlord couple would typically be doing their usual routine—one reading the newspaper, the other cooking breakfast. Sometimes, Su Ye would join them for a meal; they were a kind and warm couple.
But today felt a bit different.
When Su Ye went downstairs, the couple was seated at the dining table, while the sound of cooking came from the kitchen.
"Good morning, Mr. and Mrs. Smith," Su Ye greeted them, then pointed toward the kitchen. "Is that your new housekeeper in there?"
The elderly couple warmly invited Su Ye to sit down. The old lady smiled and said, "That's right, Mr. Su. We're planning to take a trip soon, and it felt like a waste to leave the first-floor room empty, so we rented it out."
"The person inside is our new tenant. They offered to cook breakfast as a thank-you."
After the old lady spoke, the old man leaned in conspiratorially and whispered, "The new tenant is a real beauty! You should seize the opportunity, good luck!"
As expected, men remain boys at heart. Oh, Mr. Smith, I caught that emphasis on 'real.'
Su Ye accepted their hospitality and sat at the table. Before long, a tall woman wearing an apron emerged from the kitchen.
The old man wasn't exaggerating. Just the way her apron curved in certain areas was enough to captivate many men.
Su Ye, however, wasn't rude about it. He merely imagined her wearing just the apron. Very nice!
"Breakfast is ready!"
When she saw Su Ye, the woman greeted him with a smile. "Hello, Mr. Su. Nice to see you again. I'm Sharon Carter, and from now on, I'll be your housemate."
The Smiths, seasoned as they were, immediately showed a "Oh, there's a story here" expression. The old man even shot Su Ye a look filled with admiration and envy.
Seeing Sharon Carter, whom he had only met the previous night, Su Ye couldn't help but give a wry smile.
So S.H.I.E.L.D. wasn't giving up, huh? He had thought they'd limit themselves to surveillance and investigations. He didn't expect them to blatantly move someone into his house.
Is this what they call capitalism's sugar-coated bullet?
Aren't they afraid I'll lick off the sugar coating and fire the bullet back at them?
But for Su Ye, an open housemate was much more convenient and comfortable than a covert stalker. So, overall, he was pretty satisfied with this turn of events.
At least it showed that S.H.I.E.L.D. was willing to operate openly and in good faith, rather than resorting to underhanded tricks.
"Thanks. I didn't expect Miss Carter to act so quickly," Su Ye said with a smile as he accepted the breakfast she handed him.
Seeing Su Ye's attitude, Sharon Carter breathed a sigh of relief. She had come here without Nick Fury's approval, intending to report back only after achieving some results. Now it seemed this mission was feasible.
The four of them enjoyed a harmonious breakfast. The Smiths then packed up to leave, while Su Ye prepared to head to Oscorp.
Just as Su Ye reached the garage, he heard footsteps behind him. Sharon Carter, now dressed in a formal suit, black stockings, and high heels, had followed him.
"Mr. Su, please wait a moment."
At 180 cm tall and wearing high heels, Sharon Carter's presence and aura completely overshadowed the shorter Black Widow.
Fortunately, after several power-ups, Su Ye's barefoot height was nearly 190 cm, and with shoes, it exceeded that. Otherwise, he might have had trouble matching her imposing stature.
"May I ask where you're headed?" Sharon Carter folded her hands in front of her, her demeanor graceful and pleasing.
It's hard to be rude to someone with a friendly face, especially after sharing their food. Su Ye smiled and replied, "Heading to Oscorp to check things out, you know…"
"As a major shareholder of Oscorp, you might need a personal secretary. I could also drive for you—no need for you to lift a finger. Trust me, my driving skills are top-notch," Sharon said, her smile even sweeter.
"Hiss…" Su Ye's eyebrows raised slightly. A secretary? Could this be the realization of my corrupt dream?
A few minutes later, Su Ye was sitting in the passenger seat, glancing at Sharon Carter's steady driving. Suddenly, this arrangement seemed quite nice. Let the secretary handle everything…
After parking at Oscorp, they entered the building together, but then parted ways. Su Ye asked Sharon to wait for him in the top-floor office while he wandered around.
Su Ye's identity as a major Oscorp shareholder wasn't public. He was still wearing his "Snake Zhang" intern badge, and walking around with a tall, busty secretary would attract too much attention.
And what if Gwen saw them? That would be hard to explain!
Ever since becoming Spider-Gwen, Gwen had been interning at Oscorp more frequently, practically spending her entire summer there.
According to her, she wanted to help Dr. Connors complete his experiments. After all, regenerating a lost arm had been a lifelong goal for the doctor.
Although tasks like trimming nails and driving could be handled by a secretary, and even shifting gears and adjusting speed required no effort, it lacked the thrill of conquering challenges.
It's like horseback riding—would you prefer the horse to ride you until you're exhausted, or you riding the horse until it gives up first?
If you ask me, in summer, it's better to be the one being ridden...
In short, since Gwen had a mentor-student relationship with Dr. Connors, she felt it was her duty to help him fulfill this dream.
After all, if a radioactive-spider could exist, why not a radioactive-lizard?
Su Ye supported this. Gwen having her own pursuits was better than her clinging to him all day. A woman, after all, should have an independent personality and learn to take initiative.
Su Ye wandered around aimlessly and passed by Dr. Connors' lab but didn't see Gwen. The lab seemed busy, so he decided not to disturb them and headed upstairs to check out his office.
As he approached the stairwell, he saw a black hand resting on the elevator door, seemingly holding it open just for him.
"Thanks!" Su Ye stepped in quickly, smiling as he thanked the Black employee, whose appearance resembled a certain celebrity—"as if he thought his looks couldn't get any worse, only to start losing hair too."
At the same time, Su Ye noticed the name on his badge: Max Dillon.
