Chapter 634: Raccoon Teaching How to Climb a Tree

The raccoons gathered around the basin, the ice that had formed on its surface, their tongues flicking out non-stop to lick it!

One could see many different colors inside, a kaleidoscope of greens and reds.

As omnivorous animals, the raccoons' choice of ingredients was plentiful, including frozen cucumbers, carrots, eggplants, apples, cookies, and oranges.

One raccoon tilted its head, gnawing at the bit of carrot exposed with the teeth on one side of its mouth, and when another approached, the first pushed its head back with a paw, possessively, even growling to prevent it from stealing the treat.

The newcomer, its face pushed, got angry and climbed straight onto the ice block, using its body to nudge the first one away.

With both arms protecting the ice block, it pushed the ice to the side.

As it pushed, it even stood the ice block upright and stood up too, rolling the ice across the grass like a tire with a "rumble rumble" noise, which looked quite fun.

A new game discovered!

Soon the raccoons scattered with the ice block, leaving just one raccoon behind, its head lowered, licking at the puddle of melted ice water where the block had been.

Looking up, it realized, hey, where did everyone go?

It hurriedly chased after them.

"Director, speaking of which, where are the little raccoons? Weren't they said to be allowed outside now?"

Fang Ye pointed towards a tree trunk on the edge of the activity area, where a nest box was placed, and said, "Over there!"

Lan Li turned the camera in that direction.

Two-month-old baby raccoons, growing steadily, were capable of more activities and were extremely curious about the outside world, exploring and frolicking lively!

One little raccoon dangled its feet from the edge of the nest box, claws grasping the rough tree bark, hanging steadily like Spider-Man, while another peeked out from the entrance, watching its sibling.

"Wow, such impressive tree climbing skills for its young age!"

"Won't it fall down?"

Fang Ye said, "Even if it falls, it's fine, the tree isn't tall, and there's a lawn below to cushion the fall; they'll recover naturally. It's quite normal for young wild animals to take a tumble. Think about it, a baby giraffe falls from a height of 2 meters when it's born, and it still lives well.

Of course, it'd be bad if it fell from the nest in the wild, as it might end up being eaten by other animals."

"Haha, giraffes really do have it tough!"

Fang Ye explained, "Red pandas come down headfirst from trees, while raccoons have rotatable hind paws, making them equally adept at climbing up and down, which is very flexible."

As he spoke, they saw the little raccoon climb a bit down the tree, then slowly turn its body around and begin climbing up again.

Mama wasn't there, feeling a bit timid at heart, it dared only to move around on the tree!

At the entrance of the nest box, one could see two baby raccoons squished together, wrestling and biting each other's ears.

Mama raccoon had also been attracted by the ice block earlier, squeezing in to nibble a few bites.

But now the fruit pieces were all frozen; she gnawed for a while only to make a tiny dent and decided to give up and return to continue looking after her babies.

After all, their usual food wasn't limited to ice blocks; there was plenty hidden in every corner.

Seeing Mama raccoon return, the little ones instantly became joyful. The ones inside the nest box gathered around to greet her, while the one on the tree scrambled back, chirping away.

Mama raccoon spent a moment being affectionate with her cubs, then picked one by the scruff of its neck and climbed down.

She placed it on the tree trunk at a height above the ground, stood up on her own, holding the baby's rear with her arms while biting its flank, positioning it onto the tree.

Fans wondered, "What's she doing?"

Fang Ye laughed and said, "Isn't it obvious? She's teaching the kid how to climb trees. Maybe this one is more timid and doesn't like climbing much, so she's giving it an extra lesson!"

"Shocked, for real?"

"Incredible!"

Fang Ye said, "What's so incredible about that? Educating offspring isn't exclusive to humans. Little birds have to learn how to fly and sing from their parents, and little tigers have to learn how to hunt. Most skills are acquired through learning."

The little raccoon was being nipped at the side of its neck by its mother, which made it tough to exert any force!

Its body leaned back, its hind legs pressed against the tree bark, but its front paws failed to grip.

The raccoon mother propped her cub on its side continuously, soon tiring and shaking slightly.

She carried the cub back to the ground and gently set it down, then licked her tongue.

After a brief rest, she picked up the cub from behind, wrapping her paws under the cub's armpits, and lifted it up again!

This time the cub's front paws caught the tree bark, but the back legs did not.

The raccoon mother, with her butt sticking out in an awkward position, held it like this for quite some time before finally putting the cub down again. She stood up, placed her paws on the tree trunk, turned her head, and seemed to say, "Look at me! See how Mama climbs the tree!"

She effortlessly hopped onto the tree, giving the nearby cub a butt bump and sitting down on the grass.

The raccoon mother then turned around and jumped down again, continuing to demonstrate, "Look, watch Mama!"

After failing twice, this cub, either feeling a bit dejected or simply not wanting to climb, just lay there on the grass.

The raccoon mother nudged its chin with her paw, "You've got to perk up!"

"Hahahaha, refuses to climb!"

"Mama's working so hard! So patient!"

"Seems that raising kids isn't easy for humans or other animals alike!"

"The raccoon mother is like, 'I'm exhausted, this little brat!'"

"A good spanking will straighten it out!"

The online viewers watched the raccoon mother teach her cub to climb with great interest.

After the raccoon mother's persistent efforts, she placed the cub on the tree again, and this time the cub finally clung to it.

Although it was just hanging there without actually climbing, it was still progress!

"Ohhhhh!"

"It's not easy!"

At that moment, a mischievous little one scampered down the tree, intending to go off and play. When the raccoon mother noticed, she quickly set down the cub she was teaching and rushed to catch the wandering offspring.

Not all fellows in the raccoon exhibit were in a good mood, so what if one of them bullied her child?

The young ones were still a bit small, but in another month, they could be allowed to roam more freely.

Luckily, raccoon dad ran back at this time, apparently having brought some fruit!

Several cubs tasted the treats, chirping happily, and then started playing nearby under their parents' watchful eyes.

Raccoons also raise their young together as parents.

"Oh, that's nice!"

"Such a cute family!"

"I really want to see the red panda cubs grow up quickly and come out to play."

Fang Ye laughed and said, "The red panda cubs need about two months before they can come out to play, probably during the National Day display! You can come to our zoo around National Day to see them for yourself.

By the way, we haven't decided on names for the red panda cubs yet. If you have any suggestions, you can send them in the chat, or leave a message in our email inbox."
