Chapter 10: The First Spark
That evening, Eriri logged into the social platform and published a tweet using her account "Kashiwagi Eriri."
> "My friend, Mr. Whale's comic work – Attack on Titan has entered the online competition of Weekly Shonen Magazine. It's an extraordinary piece. I hope everyone will check it out. Voting begins tomorrow—please vote to boost its popularity. Thank you all! P.S. I drew the cover myself… 💪🎨"
Attached to the tweet was the cover image and a direct link to the competition page.
After hitting post, Eriri waited a minute, glancing at her notifications—no likes, no comments. With a small sigh, she changed into her pajamas and returned to her room to tackle her homework.
...
Meanwhile, late at night in Chiba City—several dozen kilometers from Tokyo—Zaimokuza Yoshiki tossed aside a just-finished light novel and stretched across the couch in his living room.
"Another isekai again? These disposable toilet paper stories are still popular?" he muttered, clearly unimpressed.
Zaimokuza was a middle school student with dreams of becoming a legendary light novel author. Though none of his works had yet been recognized, he held an unshakable belief that greatness awaited him.
Bored by the repetitive and uninspired light novels he'd just finished, he decided to read comics instead. He recalled hearing about an online submission contest hosted by Weekly Shonen Magazine.
"The school's been buzzing about that contest lately…" he murmured, opening his laptop.
Zaimokuza remembered someone from his own Sobu High School had submitted an entry and even visited the Servant Club to get feedback. Rumor had it that Yukinoshita Yukino, the club's sharp-tongued president, had thoroughly roasted it.
Once logged into the Weekly Shonen Magazine official site, the vibrant array of comic thumbnails energized him.
"I might find inspiration for a novel… or at least something to shamelessly draw from," he grinned.
He browsed through the comics listed in the priority display area, noting that most of the featured works were isekai. Out of over forty titles, nearly all featured protagonists transported to fantasy realms, building harems, and defeating demon lords.
"There's no originality! This stuff is just manga toilet paper!" Zaimokuza shouted at the screen.
His eyes narrowed at the view counts—some of these unimaginative stories had racked up more than 500,000 views. That thought soured his mood.
"Does quality mean nothing anymore?" he growled, flashing back to the time Yukinoshita Yukino called his beloved manuscript trash.
Deciding to scroll beyond the glorified fluff, he clicked into the general display area, where most of the non-priority works were buried.
There were hundreds of entries. Thankfully, the website offered category filters: Adventure, Sci-fi, Fantasy, Suspense, Supernatural, History, Military...
He browsed diligently, page after page, finding a few comics with promise—but most had only 20 pages or less, leaving him unsatisfied.
Then he noticed the last unchecked box: Horror.
He hesitated.
Zaimokuza wasn't a fan of ghost stories or creepy monsters. Horror wasn't exactly his comfort zone. Still, curiosity eventually won.
"Okay, just a quick look," he whispered and checked the horror category.
Only about twenty comics appeared. Most of the covers featured grotesque, traditional Japanese monsters—slit-mouthed women, cursed dolls, haunted schools. Goosebumps rose on his arms.
Then something different caught his eye.
A comic titled Attack on Titan.
The cover showed a young man outfitted with strange equipment, poised on top of a high city wall, wielding twin blades as he charged at a massive humanoid monster.
It was majestic. Intense. Bold.
"Whoa…" Zaimokuza blinked, stunned by the sheer quality of the artwork. This was no amateur sketch—this was top-tier.
Drawn in by the cover, he clicked through and began to read.
Page after page, he sat speechless.
The pacing. The tone. The tension. It was unlike anything he'd read in the contest so far.
The paneling was sharp. The story was raw and powerful. Characters were compelling and vivid.
Before he knew it, he'd devoured all three chapters—72 pages in total.
And then he read them again.
And again.
Zaimokuza reread Attack on Titan four or five times that night. Every reread only pulled him deeper.
He craved more, but three chapters were all the author had uploaded.
"Who... who made this masterpiece?" he murmured.
The author name: Whale.
He Googled. No results.
"A newcomer?" he wondered aloud.
Inspired, humbled, and downright obsessed, Zaimokuza left a glowing comment beneath the comic:
> "Teacher Whale, I've read your work. It's absolutely incredible—masterful, even. I'll be voting tomorrow. I believe this comic will explode in popularity! Yours sincerely, the future legendary light novel author — General Jianhao."
Slamming his laptop shut, he leapt off the couch and whipped out his phone.
He just had to share this discovery.
"Hachiman, dude—you won't believe this. I found the most insane comic on the site—"
Click.
The line went dead. His friend had hung up on him mid-sentence.
"…Rude."
But Zaimokuza couldn't stop grinning. For the first time in ages, he felt something stir inside him—a rare jolt of admiration.
And it all came from a comic drawn by someone simply named Whale.
