Chapter 41
“For now, let’s secure some transportation in Macau.”
With that thought in mind, I headed to a car dealership.
I had a specific requirement for the car I was going to buy this time:
“It must be suited for city driving.”
If I ended up buying some flashy supercar, it would be noisy, and since I wasn’t planning to race on a circuit, its performance would be completely wasted. That was my conclusion.
And so, the dealership I arrived at was—
Mercedes-Benz.
In the end, if I wanted something durable, easy to drive, and luxurious at a glance—something that wouldn’t look out of place even for an executive—this was it. In fact, there was no other choice.
With that in mind, I came to Mercedes-Benz.
I already knew which cars I was going to buy.
The AMG G63 Long and the AMG GTR.
Yes, I can hear you now.
“That’s not appropriate for an executive car.” Or, “The AMG GTR is a supercar!”
But let me correct you: The GTR competes with the Porsche 911, which means it’s a sports car, not a supercar!
As soon as I entered the dealership, I told the dealer:
“I’ll take the G63 Long and the AMG GTR.”
At first, the dealer looked at me like he didn’t understand what I was saying. But when I mentioned that I had won big at the casino, his expression shifted to one of realization, and with a knowing look, he respectfully replied, “Understood.”
I appreciated how quickly he caught on, so I didn’t press any further and simply made the payment with my Magic Gold Card.
It’s a company car, so it’s fine, right?
I didn’t even bother looking at the price.
Since I opted for every available upgrade on both cars, I figured the total would be around 50 million yen.
The dealer told me they could deliver the cars in two to three weeks, so I asked them to bring them to my hotel as soon as they arrived.
With my shopping done, I thought about where to go next, but I realized that over the past few days, I had already bought everything noteworthy.
“Guess I’ll head back to the hotel.”
Back in my hotel room, I told my secretary, “I bought two company cars, so could you secure two parking spaces at the hotel?”
She smiled and said, “Consider it done.”
Then, I asked her whether I could use the business jet for personal travel.
“Technically, you’re not supposed to, but if you formally rent it from the company as an individual, then yes, you’re free to use it. However, since the rental fee is both paid and received by you, it’s a bit of a bureaucratic formality.”
“So, basically, it’s fine.”
“Well… from the company’s perspective, it’s a bit complicated… It’s just a procedural matter,” she replied with a wry smile.
“By the way, how far can it go?”
“The jets are primarily used for VIP clients and executive transport, so they’re quite large. Specifically, we have two Boeing 747SPs for long-distance travel and a 767-300, plus several smaller aircraft for mid-range flights.”
“Three jumbo jets… That’s impressive.”
“By the way, I was thinking of flying to Monaco today or tomorrow. Would that be possible?” I asked, unsure if it could be arranged.
“Monte Carlo, right? Let me check.”
After a brief pause, she continued, “Actually, we have a flight scheduled to pick up a client in Nice, France, the day after tomorrow. That means the jet will be heading to the Côte d’Azur tomorrow. Since it would be flying empty anyway, you’re welcome to board.”
“That’s great timing. I’d love to take that flight.”
“Understood. You’ll be flying on the 747, and since you’ll be alone, it might feel a bit lonely, but enjoy your luxurious journey.”
“Being alone sounds kind of sad… But the interior has been customized, right? I won’t be bored, will I?”
“Oh, it’s been extensively customized. The aircraft is used to transport some of the world’s wealthiest individuals, so an economy class section would be pointless. Just imagine a luxury hotel suite flying through the sky—that’s pretty close to reality.”
“Since you’re heading to Monaco, would you like me to accompany you as an interpreter?”
“That’s very practical of you—very American, in a way. But no, I’ll go alone this time. I want to make sure I don’t forget my French. Besides, English is widely spoken in Monaco.”
“You speak French too!? In that case, you should be fine. I look forward to hearing about your adventures in Monte Carlo. If you need a return flight, just let me know. Our flights to France, Las Vegas, Germany, the UK, Japan, and the Middle East are quite frequent, so don’t hesitate to ask.”
“Thanks, I’ll definitely take advantage of that.”
“I took French as my mandatory second language in university. I got really into it and even passed the French proficiency exam—with a Level 1 certification.”
“That’s amazing! I should study Japanese more seriously, given that I work for a Japanese boss. At the very least, I should be able to understand and speak it. By the way, can you understand my French?”
She suddenly switched to French to test me.
Realizing she was trying to gauge my comprehension, I responded in French:
“Your Quebecois accent is quite strong. And you’re mixing in some Toulouse accents too, aren’t you? Toulouse dialect is cool, but I’m not a fan of people testing others like that.”
I answered in a clean, northern-accented French, free of any strong regional influences.
“Incredible! You barely have any accent at all!”
In French, “having no accent” is considered high praise. A neutral accent is generally regarded as the most beautiful form of the language.
“To be honest, I really struggle with Chinese and Korean… And no matter how many times I hear it, I can’t get used to Queen’s English. Spanish—I can manage everyday conversations, but German is just beyond me.”
“The casino staff assigned to you are fluent in English, Chinese, and Korean. The hotel staff assigned to you are fluent in English, Chinese, and Spanish. As for me, I’m fluent in English, Chinese, Korean, French, German, and Italian. Being born in Switzerland has its advantages.”
Switzerland is divided into German, French, and Italian-speaking regions, with Romansh as an additional official language. As a result, almost all Swiss people are multilingual.
“You’re a genius. I hope we can continue working together to make the most of your incredible skills.”
With that, I concluded the conversation in French and asked my secretary to arrange for me to board the flight tomorrow.
