Chapter 27: They couldn't even reach the wall
[Grey's POV]
I stood still, watching the last vampire struggle beneath my foot. Its fangs, once bared in confidence, now barely parted as it gasped for air. The battlefield was drenched in a bloody mist and the bodies of the fallen blood, Vampires, and the Frost ghouls.
Pathetic.
[Grey]: Is this all you could do?
My voice was cold, emotionless. The vampire beneath me let out a final, choked gasp. I didn't let it finish. With one decisive stomp, its skull caved in beneath my heel.
The fight had been over before it even started.
I had only needed to make a single cut—from my elbow down—letting my own tainted blood spill freely into the air. Then, with the flick of a finger, I superheated it, turning it into a fine mist before propelling it forward with a controlled burst of air magic.
The result?
Total annihilation.
The vampires barely had time to react before their bodies convulsed, collapsing to the ground, and rotting from the inside out. My blood, saturated with poisons strong enough to kill in seconds, had mixed into the very air they breathed.
I watched them twitch, their eyes going wide with realization as death took them, one by one. Some tried to run. It didn't matter. The poison had already done its job.
I wiped my bloodied hand against my cloak, feeling nothing as I surveyed the carnage around me. This was easier than training the newbie team or going into a dungeon solo.
My eyes shifted to the last three vampires standing as the blood mist slowly dissipated. I still remembered how the prince had described them—Alpha and Beta, the vampire generals, and Celendion, the vampire lord himself.
They stood before me, their expressions unreadable. Unlike the others, they didn't react to the poison. No fear. No hesitation. Just calm, calculating stares.
And yet… something felt off.
A strange sensation crept up my spine, my instincts screaming at me to analyze, to react, to prepare. But before I could probe further, more vampires, Frost Ghouls, and fallen blood surged toward the fort.
I moved to spread more poison—to end this quickly.
But I stopped.
The generals stood in my path.
Their intent was clear.
They weren't going to let me interfere.
[Ash POV]
[DARK EVENT: Late Reinforcement]
[Another wave of enemies will attack after the first is eliminated]
Damn it.
Grey was already occupied, and if all of them attacked at once, there was a huge chance the fort would be breached. If even a single vampire made it inside the city, then dealing with Celendion would become impossible.
I glanced at Grey, hoping for a miracle—
And then she raised her hand.
A golden crest flared into existence above her palm—a sigil in the shape of a four-eyed leviathan. Its scarred eye gave it an eerie, menacing presence, and as it flickered in the cold air, the beast grinned ferociously, its rows of sharp teeth gleaming.
A pulse of energy surged through the battlefield, forcing every vampire and ghoul to recoil in shock.
Then, her voice rang out—commanding, absolute, filled with an authority that none could defy.
[Grey]: By the power given to me by the Emperor, I—Grey Walpurgis, founder of the Walpurgis family and head of the family—order you lesser ones to STOP and KILL YOUR SELF.
The battlefield froze.
The vampires and Frost Ghouls twitched, their eyes widening in something dangerously close to fear. As they raised their arms and pierced their own hearts dying.
And in that instant—
I realized something terrifying.
She wasn't just strong.
She was something else entirely.
And as I look at her Again my eyes wide open as I see her heart in Celendion's hand as he crushed it.
[Ash]: GREY.
[Back to Grey]
Pain.
A phantom ache echoed through my chest as I watched Celendion sneer, his clawed fingers tightening around the shattered remains of my [Mana Heart of Glass]. The faint glow of mana energy flickered before fading into nothingness, crushed to dust in his grasp.
He thought that was my real heart.
Pathetic.
I could still hear Ash's voice, screaming my name. The battlefield around me felt distant, the sounds of war muffled beneath the thunderous beat of my real heart—still alive, still pumping, if wasn't for me using [Noble Rights] he wouldn't have ambushed me.
[Grey]: You shouldn't have done that.
Celendion barely had time to react.
Celendion's red eyes widened in disbelief, but before he could make a sound, I thrust my hand into his chest, piercing deep into his heart. I ripped it from his body with a savage motion, feeling the warmth of his fading life force within my grasp.
But then, I felt it—Beta, one of Celendion's generals, had moved with speed. Before I could fully react, I was sent flying, my body crashing through the air before slamming violently into the fort gate with a sickening crunch.
As I lay there, dazed, the world spinning around me, the coldness of the fort gate pressing against my back, I felt every broken bone ache in protest. But there was something else—a maddening sensation, a hunger to see it all end. To break it, to crush it.
[Grey]: Pathetic... but you will die the same way again.
I watched, amusement crawling across my face, as Celendion's heart—the one I had taken—regenerated. The vampire lord's once confident composure shattered as he glared at me with burning rage. He was a fool if he thought I would show mercy now.
With an effortless motion, I toyed with the heart in my hand, letting him watch as I crushed it. The sickening sound of it crumbling beneath my grip was music to my ears. His body convulsed violently before his shocked eyes fell on the ruined remains in my hand.
A twisted grin spread across my face, and I could feel the madness creeping in.
This was the moment I always feared, yet strangely embraced. Every time I fought someone who could kill me, the primal part of my mind woke up—the part that wanted to see it all burn, to fight to the death and revel in the violence. I felt the bloodlust begin to surge.
As I looked around at the frozen and burned bodies of the generals, the cold, lifeless remnants of their forms, I couldn't help but smile wider. My fingers twitched, ready for the next kill. Celendion, despite having an axe lodged in his skull, still managed to pull it out with a sickening crack and charged toward me once more.
I watched him move, slowly at first, but with rage-fueled speed. He had not yet learned that I was beyond his reach.
Before he could close the gap, I was already in motion—every inch of my body a blur of speed and power. In a flash, I stood directly in front of him. Without hesitation, I thrust my hand deep into his chest, feeling his ribs break under the pressure as I yanked his heart from his body.
I repeated the action again, and again, tearing through his chest with a precision that could only be described as merciless. His body spasmed with each strike, and each time, I pulled his heart free, watching as it grew weaker and weaker in my grasp.
But this time, I didn't crush it.
This time, I let it hang there, suspended in the air, a sickening display of power. His gaze locked onto mine, eyes wide with desperation as his life slowly drained away. His body convulsed, but it was futile.
I grabbed his lungs, ripping them free with an almost detached sense of satisfaction. He gasped, blood sputtering from his mouth as his vision blurred, but there was nothing he could do to stop the inevitable.
The battlefield fell silent, the chaos of the fight fading away as I stood over the fallen lord.
I could feel the last of my energy slipping away, the bloodlust slowly ebbing from my veins. The madness, the thrill of battle, it began to calm, but I wasn't finished. Not yet. Not until it was over.
I stood there, looking down at the vampire lord's lifeless form, my cold eyes watching the last flicker of life disappear from his gaze. When it was finally done, I turned and began walking, my steps slow but deliberate. My body ached, my energy waning, but I kept moving.
I reached the gate and stopped, sitting down on the cold stone, a twisted smile spreading across my face. The silence of the aftermath settled around me.
