Chapter 12 - The Engagement
In the Taiyin World, in ancient times, martial arts flourished, with warriors divided into Acquired and Innate realms.
Innate was the world’s limit. No matter how peerless your talent or unmatched your brilliance, it stopped at Innate. A hundred years later, you’d turn to dust.
But all that changed four thousand years ago.
That day, the sky shattered, and immortals descended.
Nourished by spiritual and immortal energy, everything—people, objects, demons, beasts—underwent earth-shaking transformations.
Above Innate came cultivators, able to command water and fire, wield the forces of heaven and earth, and perform feats that seemed unfathomable to ordinary folk.
As for demon beasts, they were beings beyond Innate. To bear the title “demon” meant their essence was fundamentally distinct from the mundane.
“Only cultivators in the ‘Spirit Condensation’ stage can handle them. The Su family might be a prominent clan, but we don’t have anyone that transcendent,” Su Muqing said through gritted teeth. “But if you really want it, little brother, I’d risk my life to get it for you.”
The spirit stone she’d given him last time was a trophy from a desperate fight to break past Innate—a gamble with her life.
Defeating a Spirit Condensation beast as an Innate warrior involved countless factors: knowing its habits and weaknesses, choosing weapons with utmost care, taking potential-unlocking pills, coating her blade with deadly poison.
Even with all that preparation, she’d nearly died.
Su Muqing wasn’t a masochist, but to protect her family—her brother—she had to grow stronger.
Weakness wasn’t an option. She needed the power to safeguard them.
Yet for Su Yu’s request, she’d willingly take such risks, showing just how much she valued him.
Su Yu shook his head. “No need, Sis.”
He wanted to activate the system, but not like this.
If Su Muqing got hurt because of him, how could he live with himself?
Su Muqing’s lips curved into a smile. His concern warmed her heart.
Glancing at the sky outside, she said, “It’s getting late, and I’ve got some things to handle. I’ll head out.”
“Take care, Sis.” Su Yu stood to see her off.
Just as they reached the door, Su Muqing seemed to remember something.
“Oh, right—your wedding’s coming up soon. These days, little brother, don’t go meeting any shady characters on your own.”
Su Yu’s smile froze.
“What’s wrong?” Su Muqing asked, puzzled.
“What did you just say, Sis?”
“Don’t meet any shady characters on your own…”
“No, the part before that!”
“Before? The wedding?”
“Whose wedding?”
“Your wedding, of course.”
Su Muqing frowned inwardly. Su Yu had known about this for ages—why was he acting so shocked?
Truth be told, she wasn’t thrilled about his marriage either. It felt like her personal treasure was being shared with someone else.
But there was no helping it. No matter how reluctant she was, Su Yu had to marry someday—he couldn’t stay home forever.
She’d been picky about his partner, agonizing over the choice.
But now, no need to choose. That person was perfect—almost too good, like they were reaching up to her.
From what Su Muqing knew, she was eighteen, already an inner disciple of a major sect.
Gifted, accomplished, young—how could she not trust an Immortal Lady like that?
…
Su Yu was dazed, barely noticing when Su Muqing left.
A wedding? In just a few days, he was getting married?
As someone’s husband!?
He’d thought transmigrating meant a life of leisure—how’d he stumble into this mess?
Black lines streaked across his forehead. He resolved to dig up every last memory of his predecessor, even if it meant skipping meals.
Closing his eyes, he focused.
“No way! This is way too cliché!!”
Su Yu was floored.
In his memories, one boring day, he’d snuck out of the house. Not far from home, he’d met an injured woman.
Was there really such a thing as love at first sight?
Su Yu couldn’t tell if it was simple gratitude or lust for his body.
Hold on—
His brows furrowed.
“I’ve got a childhood sweetheart too—Gu Yanran. We’re close, and we even promised to run away together soon!”
Su Yu’s face turned green, his mouth twitching.
It wasn’t just cliché—it was peak drama.
Run away?
With this pampered, delicate body—could he handle hardship or suffering?
But Gu Yanran had taken it seriously, leaving Su Yu at a loss.
“What a headache!”
He could dodge his childhood sweetheart, but the fiancée…
…
After days of snooping, Su Yu learned more.
The Su family were generational merchants, a mundane clan. His fiancée, though, came from a cultivator lineage—worlds apart.
No matter how great worldly power was, how could it compare to cultivators?
But…
“Should I call off this wedding… or not?”
Su Yu’s eyes flickered with indecision.
Since learning of the engagement, it’d been gnawing at him.
He didn’t want to marry. As a man, he should be taking a wife, not becoming one—that was just too humiliating.
But if he refused outright…
“First, Mom and Dad might not agree. Even if they respected my choice and reluctantly went along…”
Su Yu wasn’t one to decide on a whim—he’d thought it through.
Plenty of failed betrothals turned into feuds.
Refusing wasn’t simple—it’d mean worrying if the other side, to erase their shame, might retaliate and wipe him off the map entirely.
His hand clenched slightly, his face growing solemn.
He wasn’t the naive boy his predecessor had been. He knew the stakes.
But knowing that—what could he do?
Maybe the original Su Yu was better suited to this world.
Here, men were like women—slender, frail, toppled by a breeze.
They could naturally ask for hugs and kisses from big sisters, unbothered by being pinned down—something Su Yu could never accept.
Still, setting that aside, being kept by an Immortal Lady wasn’t a bad deal. Back in his old world, plenty of guys dreamed of a rich woman’s support and never got it.
You want my body, I want your money.
In a way, it wasn’t much different from his situation.
In this female-dominated world, being kept wasn’t shameful—it was normal. “Mutual benefit,” they called it. Neither side lost out.
Too bad Su Yu couldn’t let go of that subtle pride in his heart.
But looking at his current predicament…
