Finding our fugitive wasn't difficult.... that is, finding out from the analysts where he was just a few minutes ago. They'd been tracking him since yesterday, and hadn't reported it only because of orders from their superiors. And since they were given the go-ahead, all the surveillance information was delivered to our desk. What happened next was a matter of technique. And we only started at night when the guy went out for a while.
It was expected that Kenji was in hiding, most likely having learnt what happened to the rest of the terrorists, who were lucky enough to become wielders of powers without turning into "something". It's unclear how it happened that there were more than two of them. Usually one group has at most two "supervillains", as the selection is brutal, I would even say - natural. So failures during the creation of a super in bush conditions are very many, dozens, if not more.
The big question now was which side Kenji was on. As far as Mesmer could tell, after the telepathy session with Kimiko, they had been snatched from their home and used as cheap labour. But that doesn't change the fact that he could have simply been brainwashed. These guys seemed to have experience. It'd be better if he was neutral towards us. But I have a reasonable doubt our team's gonna have any luck here.
- You ready? - I turned to the Asian woman standing next to me, and she just nodded, not going to lose sight of the one she was watching.
It was a young guy, no older than twenty. The clothes looked like they'd been taken from a dumpster, a possibility I couldn't rule out. Clothes for the homeless are very easy to find and get, there are even special places to drop off old clothes. In his hands he was carrying a transparent bag with groceries that were probably stolen. He didn't seem to have any money, otherwise he wouldn't be here.
The girl didn't wait for her brother to reach the abandoned house where homeless people gathered. She simply jumped down from the fifth floor and landed lightly on her feet, then went directly to the guy. He, in turn, had already noticed her, tensing up slightly. But his fears did not come true, his sister jumped on him and hugged him tightly.
I calmly stepped back, continuing to watch through the walls. So far, everything was just fine, the guy was obviously happy to see him and hugged his sister back. And then they started talking, or rather Kimiko communicated with gestures, while Kenji answered her with words. He seemed to be a bit unused to using gestures, and he was speaking in a language I didn't know. It was hard to follow the conversation, so I had to rely on facial expressions and the tone of the words. Unfortunately, the results of the conversation were disappointing.
And so, not finding a common language with her brother Kimiko went to extreme measures, relaxing. She showed a couple of gestures, calming Kenji down, after which she hugged him again. And while the guy was distracted, pulled out a special syringe from her pocket, which was promptly injected into his shoulder. I sighed quietly as I saw the needle bend, failing to penetrate the super's skin. So he's at least on Starlight's level of resistance, which complicates things.
- Moving on to plan B. - With annoyance he announced into the earpiece speaker, linking up with the others.
At that moment, Kenji frowned, causing Kimiko to fly away from him like a ball, straight into the wall. He was at least aware of the supers' increased resilience, so he didn't bother to be ceremonious. He couldn't be caught so easily now, so I stopped hiding, walking to the edge. The guy spotted me immediately and frowned when he saw my red eyes.
With a distinctive pop, the blurred silhouette flew towards the Asian man, reaching him almost instantly. Except it turned out that the surprises from him didn't end there. He managed to spot the black-clad speedster as he approached and had time to use his abilities. This time Kenji showed that with his sister he was still holding back when Train-A with his body broke through the wall of the fifth floor of the building on the roof of which I continued to watch everything. But I didn't worry about Reggie, he's strong enough to withstand that and more. After that, Kenji ran inside one of the abandoned buildings, seemingly thinking it would give him an escape.
- Starlight, Maeve, he went inside.
- Copy that!
It's actually a pretty smart move, because it would be easier to catch him in the open. But to attack without preparation against such a strong super would be foolish and overconfident, and I didn't think I was a fool. Next it was Starlight's turn to step right in front of him, blinding him with a bright yellow light and knocking him backwards. It had an effect, just not the one we were hoping for. Who would have thought he'd get so good at mastering his powers that he could use them blindly?
A second later, I was already watching in amazement as the floor of the building collapsed after a couple of swings of my arms. It literally flattened the few drones that were filming it. Starlight, on the other hand, barely managed to shoot herself as far away from the epicentre of this destruction as possible, so she was almost unhurt. A couple of rocks falling on her wouldn't do anything to her. I didn't know she could do that. But it looks like she went to a lot of trouble, preferring to lie down right afterwards. There were no power sources nearby, so the blonde was out of the game for now.
Maeve was worse off, buried under the rubble but relatively unharmed. She hadn't managed to knock the guy out while Starlight was distracting him. She seemed fine, so she should be able to get out on her own. I'm gonna have to get in on the action if I don't want the guy to run away or worse.
- Wow. - Deepness was shocked, standing next to me. Black Noir was also here, along with Stormfront.
- He has great potential. - I nodded to him, watching him easily get out from under the rubble.
- Are Maeve and Starlight okay?
- They're fine. Stormfront, with me.
Without waiting for an answer, I just drop down, quickly making it the shortest way down. The brunette lands next to me, releasing the lightning bolts from her hands that she used to push off to fly. It was at that moment that Kenji lunged outwards, breathing in air freely.
- Would you just give up? - I asked, knowing full well that the guy wouldn't just give up.
- Fuck you! - He shouted, raising his hands. But that was all he could do.
Branching purple lightning bolts pierced his body. The woman watched her victim's convulsions with a smile, feeling her superiority over him. Yeah, and who do I have to work with? Unfortunately, such supers are not at all uncommon, Homelander himself was one too.
- Stormfront.
As soon as my voice sounded, she stopped the torture, letting the guy fall to the ground to catch his breath. A surprising malleability that's kind of out of character for a new girl. I wonder why that would be?
- You'll have to come with us, Kenji," he told the boy in a calm, even slightly bored tone, not showing his surprise. - If you don't agree, she'll happily repeat the recent procedure and she won't care about your well-being, unlike your sister.
Sparks flickered across my partner's fingers as she confirmed my words. The boy clenched his teeth, stretching his arms out in front of him. At the same moment, a bolt of lightning travelled through his body, nullifying the determined guy's initiative. Sighing, I decided to end his suffering, walking over to the convulsing body. Meanwhile, Stormfront had finished playing the role of Palpatine, letting me finish the job. A sharp and equally accurate punch went right where it needed to, ensuring that the guy would be out of action for at least half an hour, and all that was left was something to wrap his nimble hands in.
- Homelander! Maeve's under the rubble! We've got to get her out! - Starlight shouted in panic as she reached us, walking around the collapsed part of the building.
- She's okay. Those rocks are like Styrofoam to her, annoying but can't do any damage. - Shrugged, continuing to watch the monotonous process of a very annoyed heroine rising to the surface. - Are you alright?
- Yeah, I'm fine.
- Good. The press will be here any minute.
The next couple of hours were spent doing interviews for all sorts of TV stations. Luckily, I was able to get the whole team on board to talk about the details of the operation. And it was very successful, because it was planned, if you don't go into details. But for a plan that had been drawn up in just a couple of hours, it wasn't bad. Evacuate everyone discreetly, and then make sure there were no gawkers with their cameras hanging around. It's a good thing it wasn't me. It's lucky that just the word "supervillain" has a sobering effect on people and they're very docile. So at the time of all this destruction, none of the residents were home, which eliminated any accidental victims.
Depth and Black Noir came in handy. Still, since it was Seven who stopped the supervillain, the absence of some of the crew would be suspicious at the very least. Unfortunately, on land, our underwater hero was almost useless, even vulnerable. Noir wasn't involved in this operation for the simple reason that we weren't going to kill Kenji. So in terms of usefulness in this particular situation, he was on the level of Depth.
After it was over, Stan Edgar came in person to talk about how heroes are needed in our current realities. And also about how he would be investigating the whole Drug V thing, which of course he knew nothing about. It will be interesting to see where this "investigation" leads.
