Chapter 20: Chapter 20: The Temple Beneath Silence
[Scene: The Temple Door – Mistlands Heart]
FX: Faint heartbeat… not hers. The door ripples as Elara's hand sinks into it, like warm tar. 🩸🫀
[Visual: Black roots spiral outward, forming an arch. The stone beneath her feet breathes, like a creature in slumber.]
[Elara] (quietly):
"This is wrong."
Elara (thinking):
"But I can't pull back. It's like it's… welcoming me."
[Scene: Inside – The Memory Labyrinth]
FX: WHOOSH — everything changes.
The world flips inside-out.
*[Visual: Elara finds herself in a glowing corridor made of mirrors — hundreds of reflections of herself stretch in every direction. But some of them… aren't her.]
One is younger. One is wounded. One is smiling — but has no eyes.
[Voice – Hollow King, soft, melodic, inside her head]:
"You've walked far, little soul. Let me carry the rest."
[Elara] (draws blade):
"I didn't come here to be carried."
Elara (thinking):
"It's trying to soothe me. Make me want to give up."
[The mirror wall ripples. A version of Elara steps out — dressed in royal robes, a golden crown on her head.]
[Crowned Elara]:
"You could rule. Lead the world without war."
[Elara] (shaking her head):
"I've seen where that path ends."
She slices the reflection in half.
FX: SHHHHRR—
It shatters into black butterflies.
[Second mirror: A little girl version of her appears, reaching out.]
[Child Elara]:
"You miss her. Your mother. Let me show you her again…"
[Elara flinches, then growls]:
"That's not mercy. That's manipulation."
[Scene Shift – The Core Chamber]
[Visual: A vast cathedral built upside-down — roots hang from the sky, and a heart-shaped crystal pulses on the ceiling. The center of the room is a mirror pool, still as glass.]
FX: Soft whispering echoes around her. Every whisper is in her voice.
"I'm tired."
"Let someone else decide."
"I just want peace."
[Voice – The Hollow King, more clearly now]:
"I am not your enemy. I am what comes after your pain."
"You fight so hard… when all you truly want is to rest."
[Elara kneels at the mirror pool. Her reflection begins to move… without her. It smiles. It speaks.]
[Mirror Elara]:
"I can carry the burden. I can be you. Let go."
[Elara (grits her teeth)]:
"I wasn't forged to survive. I was forged to resist."
Elara (thinking):
*"This isn't possession. It's seduction. It's trying to make me surrender by sounding like me."
[She raises her blade — it glows faintly, but flickers.]
[Elara]:
"Your voice is mine, but your will is not."
[FX: Light pulses from her blade — cutting through the air like a bell. All the mirrors crack. The temple shakes.]
[Hollow King – Voice warps]:
"You are not the first. You will not be the last."
"You cracked the crown… but you cannot kill what is already buried inside you."
[Scene: Temple Cracks Open]
FX: The roots recoil. Black water spills from the ceiling as the room distorts.
[Visual: The upside-down cathedral begins to invert — Elara starts falling upward. The soulblade stabs into a floating stone, catching her mid-fall.]
[Elara, shouting]:
"I am not yours!"
[Final Vision – A Shadow Within]
[Visual: In the swirl of distortion, Elara sees a shadow version of herself — no skin, no eyes, only chains where her heart should be.]
It smiles.
Shadow Elara:
"Then why do I know all your thoughts?"
[Scene: Outside – Temple Entrance]
FX: Kaelith watches from the trees as the temple trembles violently. The door begins to collapse into roots. Black steam hisses out like venom. 🌫️⚡
[Kaelith (alarmed)]:
"Elara…"
[Inside – Elara screams as the temple shatters around her. Just before she's consumed, she stabs the soulblade into her own chest, and everything explodes in white.]
