- What are you talking about? - Trying not to show how excited I was, I asked Gerda.
- About how different you are from the rest of your classmates," the girl said with a smirk. At the same time she spoke in a rather strange way. No one had ever heard such a way of constructing sentences.
- And by what? - At that moment I put my hands in my pockets and clutched the talisman that was there.- An aura like yours cannot belong to a person who is ordinary in essence. - What? Aura? What is it about?! - All this time I've been watching closely and I've been able to notice how your aura has been shrinking and stretching from time to time. And I'm sure the manipulations were deliberate. Like today, for example, when you threw a coin upwards, and each time your aura reacted in a certain way.
Holy shit, I'm so fucked! But who knew she could see things like that?! On the other hand, she seems to have mistaken me for someone else. I thought Gerda had realised I was a hit man. That would have been Mikola's idea of fun. Well, I guess I'll have to answer her and find out all about the aura.
- I don't know what you mean," I told her, trying to smile as nicely as I could. But it didn't seem to work.
- You're a terrible liar," Gerda snorted dismissively. - You don't have to try. I see much more than mere mortals. And your actions, too.
- And what does this so-called aura look like? - I resigned myself to the fact that I couldn't change her mind. Gerda was too sure. Instead, I wondered what she was seeing.
- Actually, your case is unique. I've never seen it on anyone else," Gerda said with a strange intonation. Is that admiration? - Instead of one, as in ordinary people, you have three, plus some strange construction on the inner aura, as if lace fabric. And it's all inside something that looks like an energy shield.
What? Three auras, some kind of lacy fabric. I hope it's not pants. Okay, all kidding aside. Then there's this barrier. I'm guessing about the last two, though. This so-called "strange lace fabric" is most likely the System, and the barrier appears to be projected by the Moonstone ring and chain. I can't tell about the three auras, though.
- What do the three auras look like?
- I think you understood something from my confused words," said the girl, pleased with herself. After that, she began to look at me carefully. - The inner aura is similar to that of ordinary people, but more rich and structured. The middle one gives off a shadow that is not inferior to the darkness of the night. And the outer is the strangest of them all. It creates a distortion around you that interacts with everything, animate and inanimate. People, objects, food, whatever. And some people can be affected in ways I don't even know how to express. If I believed in such nonsense, I'd say fate. But that's a load of rubbish. There is no such power in this world.
- There are many things in this world, my friend Horatio, that our wise men never dreamed of. - Of course there isn't. You're lucky you don't know about the Infinity Stones. As they say, blessed is the believer.
- Wow! You know the classics too? - Gerda asked with a little approval. Surprisingly, I didn't think she was capable of any other emotion than arrogance.
- A little. Well, it was interesting, but why did you set it all up?
- The boredom that clouds my mind," the girl said, shrugging her shoulders. - I mistakenly thought that this school would be more fun. But all my classmates, and most of the other students are boring and ordinary people. But you're more interesting.
- Because of the aura?
- Not only that. You're more mature and calm than our peers. You're also smart beyond your years, and yet you have a power that's hidden from everyone. That's why I decided to talk to you. No matter how things go, I'll be able to dispel the boredom," Gerda said, smiling.
Yes, you don't look like a normal child yourself. You could say that everything I've said applies to you too. Except I'm a hit man, and what are you?
- Aren't you afraid I'm not gonna let it go now? Trying to shut you up somehow? - I was really curious about that one. Is she that cocky or does she have a good reason for this behaviour?
- Pfft-pfft-pfft! - Covering her mouth with the palm of her hand, Gerda started snorting in an attempt to contain her laughter, but it didn't last long and she stopped holding back. - Aha-ha-ha-ha! I'd like to see that!
- What's so funny? - I frowned. - You're a little short-sighted for someone who sees more than the rest of us.
- I don't sense any great danger from you," said Gerda, laughing. When she saw that I was about to interrupt her, she raised her hand in a stopping gesture. - I'm not talking about your abilities, but about your behaviour. You're just a homely boy who wouldn't hurt a fly.
Why would I hurt a fly?! I only clap them like that, by the way!
- Besides, I can stand up for myself.
- And how? - I asked, still hurt by her words.
- And like this, - said Gerda with a maniacal smile and stretched out her hand with spread fingers in my direction.
I tensed, but nothing happened. With a grin I looked at this larva of a strong and independent woman and saw the seal of arrogance come off her face.
- Well, I was right. You are surrounded by a shield," Gerda said in surprise. But instantly she regained her composure. - I wondered how strong it was!And that's when I saw again the tenacles she was controlling. They wrapped the golden barrier around me and, apparently, began to squeeze it. I immediately felt my ring and chain heat up. So, what, she's using psychic powers?! But which ones? Telepathy, telekinesis, or some other kind of evil thing?! Damn it, I don't think I should wait for my defences to fall! While she's struggling, I'll use my physical abilities to twist her.
After making my decision, I rushed towards the girl standing a few metres away from me. Grabbing her hands, I decided to end things peacefully at first. If she didn't listen, she was gonna get a belt. Or rather my palm, since I don't have a belt.
- Stop that right now!
- What else is going to happen? - The little goat asked mockingly.
- I'm gonna give you a cousin's arse! Get your tentacles off me!
- Are you sure you're in a winning position now? - Gerda asked with interest and looked down with her head.
And there were my future children in danger. That girl stood up so that at any moment she could hit me between my legs with all her might. Plus, even though I had her, I didn't grab her as well as I would have liked. She could have broken free if she wanted to. I'm not much of a hand-to-hand fighter, I've picked up a few tricks from Aunt Naomi and Aki, but at this point I realised she was better at it than I was. Who the hell is this puberty ulcer?!
- Get your tentacles away from me," I told her in an objectionable tone. - I didn't use my abilities, so there's no telling who would've beaten who.
- All right, all right, I did. Is this stern warrior satisfied? - Raising her hands in a conciliatory gesture, Gerda said.
- Yes. - After making sure she complied with my demand, I let the girl go. - What the hell did you do that for?!
- I just wanted to show that I wasn't defenceless," Gerda replied, covering her eyes and spreading her arms apart.
- Your ability didn't work on me," I told her with a snicker. - What was it, anyway?
- Telekinesis. I have to say, your defences are excellent.
- So you're a mutant? And what about your eyesight?
- Yes, mutant. Vision's just another ability. Do you also have telekinesis, which is what you used to control that coin? Or do you have defence as well? - The girl asked as she came closer.
- My ability is not telekinesis. And neither is defence. I'm not a mutant, though. - So these tentacles, the way I saw her telekinesis. Interesting. - I'm not gonna say anything else.
Although I may have been a little hasty there. I may have mutant powers that I just haven't awakened yet. That would explain why I have a question in the race column. But right now, I haven't awakened any abilities.
- Actually, I told you my abilities, and in a gesture of goodwill, as a gentleman, you should reciprocate," Gerda said, looking at me disapprovingly. Yes, she knows how to convey with a single expression all that she thinks of you. A real talent.
- You attacked me, and I didn't say I'd give you everything on a silver platter," he said, snorting dismissively. - And it's foolish to reveal your abilities. Now I know what you can do. And you have no such information!
- Look at you, what a strategist! - Gerda cheered up. Previously, she mostly had a slightly maniacal grin, so when I saw a more or less normal smile, I was even confused. - Even without my powers, I'm not defenseless, you know. And you knew it, I could tell by the look in your eyes.
- I'll be ready next time. - I persisted, unwilling to agree with her.
- And what are you prepared to do to a defenceless maiden? - Tilting her head, Gerda asked. - Even when you were afraid, you shouted for me to stop. I was not at all frightened at a moment so serious. One can see at once that you are a peaceful boy, in whom the commandments have been well beaten in, and not prepared to go further than a couple of blows to the weak.
- One would think you'd be capable of more than that," I muttered back resentfully. Yes, I prefer to settle things peacefully. Is that a bad thing? It's a pity that not everyone follows this principle.
Only after my words Gerda changed her face. Her usual arrogant and mocking expression changed to a rather creepy one in a second. The comparison with a lifeless mask came to my mind. She was no longer smiling, instead pressing her lips together until they were white. What was she doing?
But fortunately this behaviour didn't last long, and the girl returned to her former appearance. I, on the other hand, was taking a breath at this point. What did I say that made her face change so much? I don't think so.
- Who knows," she finally answered with a faint smirk. - But what about your secret ability? Will you tell the poor girl who lost all her trump cards?
- Some other time. In my next life, when I'm a cat.
- What?" Gerda frowned, trying to comprehend what I had said. - How are you going to tell me if you're a cat? They only meow. And what makes you think you're going to be a cat? Does it have something to do with your ability? As I watched her rush through her questions, I thought that she still had a bit of childishness left in her. Because the behaviour of the true aristocrat she looks like should dictate a more reserved attitude even to such strange answers. And here it was a childish response. At the same time, she dropped her weird syllable and spoke like a normal person. I'm sure in about 5 years she would have just looked at me like a moth after such a response and mentally twisted at my temple.
- No, it's not. And don't try to find logic in those words, it's just a joke for those who know.
- I'll take your word for it. - You don't look it. Did you think it was a message to be deciphered? She continued with dignity, returning to her usual demeanour. - Anyway, in the future you will tell us about your abilities, I dare to hope. It's worth sticking together, for the likes of us.
- Like us? Maybe my powers are magic, not mutant strength.
- I doubt it. Mage powers don't look like that. They mostly draw power from the outside, not often using their own energy. - The girl gave me a mini lecture. I remembered something like that from comic books and films, but how would a little girl like that know that? She's a super mega complicated girl. - And about us, I meant that people with unusual abilities should stick together. The simpletons don't like us and want to take advantage of us. Our uniqueness unites us more than the blood in our veins.
- "Are we of the same blood, you and I?" - Asked Gerda with a smile.
- Exactly," said the girl, nodding importantly.
- And I see you don't like ordinary people very much?
- Why? - Gerda answered the question with a question. She stopped smiling again and frowned. - For the ever-increasing hatred of people like us who don't fit into their limited worlds?
- They seem to treat mutants normally... - I stretched out, trying to remember what they said on TV.
- They tolerate us sooner than later. I doubt it will last long," Gerda said confidently.
Well, I can't agree with her. Who wants to hunt mutants, knowing that his child may be one of them? There's enough problems with having children to declare them non-human and then destroy them. I thought that was the most important reason, in that the widespread persecution of mutants had not yet begun. Although the Mutant Community, led by Magneto, was created as a response to certain pressures. But maybe my thinking was wrong and I was wrong. After all, at this point I can only draw conclusions based on common knowledge.
- Aren't you afraid I'll tell everyone you're a mutant? - Making the face of a triumphant villain, asked the black one.
- Pfft-pfft-pfft! - Once again covering her mouth with her hand, she began to laugh. - What a face! It's so funny!
- Stop laughing already! I was being serious!
- Pfu-pfu! Well, don't look at me so threateningly," said Gerda, laughing, and waving her hand regally at me. - I am not afraid, for the reason that you will not tell a living soul.
- Why is that? - I asked her with interest.
- You yourself are hiding your powers, otherwise you would have already told your classmates and they would have told the whole school, - Gerda shook her finger and began to explain her motivation. - You've never had a misstep, and no one suspects that you have unusual powers hidden in your body. And if you tell them I'm a mutant, you'll be setting yourself up, too, in a heartbeat.
- Hmm. What if you're wrong and I can't hold my tongue?
- There's a small chance of that," Gerda said confidently, crossing her arms over her chest. - I've been watching you carefully all this time and I've come to the conclusion that you are psychologically older than our dear peers. When necessary you can keep your mouth shut and use your head, which is rare. And you're not in a hurry to show your abilities. The only time you appear to have used force is when you shot me during my illness.
- Where did you get that from? - I asked her, wondering how she'd figured it out just by watching me.
I tried not to stand out in school, except for my knowledge, replying to small classmates and talking to their parents. But that was a long time ago and just confirmed everyone's opinion that I was a prodigy. That's how she realised I was involved in what happened with that machine-gun girl?
- She listened attentively to our classmates dear, - said the girl, shrugging her shoulders. Is she a girl at all?
- Yeah. You're something else. So neutral? - I asked her the most important question of all.
- That's fine with me. - Gerda nodded regally. Then she smiled predatorily. - I hope you will dispel the boredom that is eating away at my soul.
- I didn't actually sign up for this. - I tried to deny such a dubious honour.
But she wasn't listening to me. Walking past me, the little lady said, looking at the school:
- 'The bell of this school will ring now,' she said confidently. - It's time for us to go to the abode of boredom.
- Yes? Though we've talked long enough, I think there's still minutes to go... - And then I was interrupted by the school bell. -Three. You've got a good sense of time, I see.
That's what I said as I followed her. Gerda was walking fast, but without losing her dignity. Slightly turning her head to me and bypassing the students running from everywhere, with a smile of superiority said:
- A true lady differs from the vast majority, in that she is perfect in everything.
- A perfect person beyond human, cannot have vulnerabilities or weaknesses.
- Exactly," she said, her facial expression showing her surprise at my phrase. - I'll take these words to myself.
- Take it, it's not a pity," I grinned and answered her.
We were just approaching our classroom, and, letting the lady go first, I went in after her.
- Wright, Smith, come to your seats," said our teacher, glancing at us, and began to write the topic of the lesson on the blackboard.
I glanced around the classroom and looked at Danielle, and realised that I was in for an intense interrogation. The kid's eyes were glittering. Oh, well. I'd survived the conversation with Gerda, and I'd survive this.
