Chapter 286: Chapter 286 We...

Logan let out an awkward chuckle. It was always embarrassing to talk about bad feelings in front of a little girl. Moreover, his question had stemmed from a moment of unwillingness rather than anything meaningful. After all, he already knew the answer.

"Sigh, I really brought it on myself. It's getting late, you should..."

At this time, Hanazawa felt that the very, very detestable Ninja in front of him was even more detestable.

She cut him off, and said fiercely: "So why did you become a Missing-nin?"

Logan was stunned and then said, "Ah… there were many reasons..." But the most important thing is that he did not understand how difficult it would be for Sumika to face an independent marriage in the Capital's rigid society. Since he hadn't taken action early, being forced into a decision would have been inevitable. That was his mistake.

"Being a Missing-nin does bring a lot of trouble. But regarding Sumika… Hah, you're just a kid, anyway. Listen, an adult like me..."

Finding a true kindred spirit in life was rare. Finding someone truly precious was even rarer. The news tonight had certainly shaken him, but would someone like Logan just accept it and move on? What a joke. He was simply… staying still for now.

An engagement was just an engagement. It wasn't even an official marriage yet. If he wasn't afraid of facing Orochimaru, why would he care about Capital's political powers?

The only thing that mattered to him was the person. Besides, there are some things that are inappropriate to say in front of a little girl who is not even sixteen years old. After all, in the modern world, she would still be a middle schooler.

However, Hanazawa couldn't stand it any longer, and her voice rose a little higher, and she said angrily: " Do you even realize how many high-ranking officials have tried to arrange a marriage for her?! Ever since I came here to study under Hoshino-sama, there have been countless rumors and visits from nobles, but Hoshino-sama insisted on refusing them all. Even when she was pressured, she used whatever means she could to delay them! But ever since that day when she sent people to Konoha to gather information and learned that you had become a Missing-nin…!"

Hanazawa stopped abruptly, her little face was already flushed with emotion. Logan hadn't expected such an intense gaze from her, and continued to listen to the other party: "Do you know, Hoshino-sama cried... She was miserable the entire night. But the next day, she resumed handling affairs as usual. Not long after, she tested me on the lunar calendar, asking me to pick out an auspicious date..."

"Then..." Hanazawa trailed off. Taking a deep breath, she turned her head away, clearly frustrated at having said so much to Logan.

Logan remained silent, processing it all.

"So, the shift in circumstances..."

"Had nothing to do with you being a Missing-nin!" Hanazawa snapped, cutting him off. After venting her emotions, she seemed to calm slightly, but her voice remained cold, "Who cares about some Ninja like you?"

Logan felt that what the other party said was wrong and contradictory, but then she said something that left him momentarily stunned.

Hanazawa glanced over him once more, as if she could see right through him, and scoffed, "You don't care about Hoshino-sama at all."

'I don't care?' Logan opened his mouth but found himself unable to speak.

"As far as I know, you've only met Hoshino-sama a few times since you first got acquainted. I really don't see you caring about her at all."

"Even I know from books that girls need... never mind."

Perhaps realizing she had said too much, Hanazawa stopped and turned to look around. The moonlight cast shadows, and the attendants had been waiting at the entrance. decided to give the extremely detestable Ninja beside her one last glare, one filled with absolute disdain.

"I really don't know what Hoshino-sama likes about you."

After saying those indifferent words, Hanazawa lifted her foot and decisively walked away from Logan.

"Hey…"

A male voice came from behind her. Though she didn't want to turn around, Hanazawa held back her impatience and gave him the courtesy of stopping for a second.

"Um... Hanazawa-chan, thank you."

"Don't call me chan!!!" Hanazawa turned around abruptly, looking at the young man, who now has an earnest expression, and stated firmly, "My name is Hanazawa Kana!"

"Good name..."

"I have no intention of letting you remember it, nor do I want you to." Kana didn't think they would ever meet again. The intelligent yet inexperienced girl had already voiced the grievances she had kept to herself. Without hesitation, she turned and stepped through the mansion's entrance.

Logan watched as the girl, who barely reached his chest, disappeared behind the door and chuckled lightly. The other party's straightforward words were surprisingly helpful, even though hardly any of them were pleasant... 'No, wait, there were some good ones.'

'Next…'

The guards at the entrance watched Hanazawa enter the mansion. Just as one of them turned back, ready to deal with the troublesome guy leaning against the wall, they realized that he was gone.

When the impulse to act completely consumes the mind, nothing can stop it. Logan patted his cheeks, turned back toward the brightly lit mansion, and fully grasped the issue at hand.

Once he made his decision, he couldn't bear to wait even a second longer. In an instant, he vanished from his spot, moving through the courtyard at a speed far exceeding his previous cautious pace.

The stationed sentries only felt a gust of wind brush past them. If any of them sensed something and turned around, they would be 'gently' knocked unconscious.

Logan strode straight to the third-floor attic and pushed open the door. Inside, he immediately saw Sumika sitting at her vanity, lost in thought.

"How did you..." Sumika looked at Logan in panic.

"The day after tomorrow, this engagement to that internal affairs official or whatever. Do you want it?" Logan asked bluntly without any redundancy, 'Damn it, I should have asked this a long time ago.'

Sumika looked confused and said weakly: "You mean Minister of Internal Affairs' son, Yoshikawa..."

"That doesn't matter! I'm only asking you one thing… do you want?" Logan leaned in closer and stared directly at those beautiful agate-red eyes.

Sumika's eyes widened, and while looking at Logan's eyes, she slowly... shook her head.

"That's all I needed to know." Logan nodded firmly.

He thought about how just a few hours ago, he had been on the streets of modern Japan.

He thought of the mystery of his transmigration and the shadow clone that vanished while investigating the Manga Author.

He thought about his first meeting with Sumika, about the red-and-white shrine maiden outfit, about the dance during the festival. The chimes, the warm sunlight… he remembered so many things.

"Sumika." Logan called out her name.

Sumika nodded, her eyes carrying a hint of expectation.

"We…"

Just as Logan said this one word, the time suddenly stopped.

The next second, he found himself unable to continue. The words he had been preparing were shattered by an abrupt sense of distortion.

'What the hell...?' Logan turned his head in shock.

Whoosh…

A drastic shift in sound, from absolute silence to overwhelming noise. Neon lights flashed. The streets were bustling with people. The city of endless night had returned.

The distortion ended, and Logan stood on the street. He traveled to modern world again, back to the bookstore's entrance in Akihabara.
