Chapter 6: Chapter 6: The Gathering of Zombies
Zhang Xiaoqiang continued to live a simple yet fulfilling life in this now silent city.
He would get up, exercise, have a meal, exercise again, have another meal, exercise once more, have a meal again, take a short break and then go to sleep.
The huge amount of exercise every day made his stored food deplete rapidly. Sometimes he even forgot the original intention of exercising and just exercised numbly and mechanically. Without the Internet and without other living people around, he didn't know what else to do except exercise.
Even Zhang Xiaoqiang wasn't satisfied with his previous training methods anymore. He put on a backpack for mountain climbing with heavy objects in it, carrying a load of nearly thirty to forty catties (about 15 to 20 kilograms), and practiced thrusting and dodging. By now, he could always thrust his iron spear at one fixed point, and he believed that he could dodge the zombies' bites even with his eyes closed.
After all, people can't stay idle. Once they are idle, all kinds of random thoughts will come into their minds. Trapped in this small place all day long, what else could he do except getting as tired as a dog every day?
After finishing his daily exercise, looking at the zombies through binoculars at the windowsill had become one of the few entertainments for Zhang Xiaoqiang. Even out of extreme boredom, he gave names to the zombies. Ordinary zombies were named "Cannon Fodder", strength-type zombies were named "Hercules", abbreviated as "D-type zombies", and agile-type zombies were named "The Flash", abbreviated as "S-type zombies". Well, it was just his little odd hobby.
That S-type zombie that liked to eat rats was still guarding in front of the gutter. Moreover, it seemed to be continuing to evolve. It was still 1.4 meters tall, but its arms had become longer, and its palms had already reached down to its ankles. Its five sharp claws were just like five sharp daggers, pitch-black and shiny. And within about fifteen or sixteen meters around it, not a single zombie dared to get close. If any zombie accidentally entered its territory, it would give a hoarse growl as a warning.
In Zhang Xiaoqiang's opinion, the S-type and D-type zombies on the street had evolved after eating human flesh. If they continued to consume more flesh and blood, they would continue to evolve.
For S-type zombies, there would be S2-type, S3-type, or even higher ones like S4, S5, S6. Similarly, those D-type zombies would also experience the same kind of evolution.
As for humans, there was a high possibility that less than ten percent or even fewer would remain. Then, if zombies couldn't get human flesh, they would attack all living creatures.
"Perhaps in the near future, six billion three hundred million or more zombies will eat up all the living things on the earth."
Thinking of this, Zhang Xiaoqiang gave a bitter smile. He didn't know if there would evolve zombies that could move in the water. If there were, then on the earth, apart from zombies, there would only be insects left.
He put these messy thoughts behind him, took a rest, smoked a cigarette, and then started to cook. Looking at the remaining supplies, he realized that they couldn't last him for many more days.
After having a meal, Zhang Xiaoqiang opened his computer as usual, ready to play some single-player games. But as soon as the startup sound rang out, the computer screen went black in the next moment, and the lights in the house also went out.
"Was the fuse blown?"
Zhang Xiaoqiang couldn't react for a while. He searched around for a flashlight and a fuse. It took him quite a while to understand that the urban power grid, after three months of operation, had stopped working.
The whole city was plunged into darkness.
Zhang Xiaoqiang sat on the bed, staring blankly at the pitch-black night sky outside the window. It was so quiet around that he could already hear his own heartbeat.
Downstairs, from time to time, there would come the sound of empty soda cans being kicked by zombies. That sound would travel far and wide in the empty and silent night.
Zhang Xiaoqiang sat quietly, feeling that he had never been this quiet before. He thought about the past for a long time. It was already late at night, but he became even more awake.
"I can't stay here any longer. I have to fight with my back to the wall and leave this dead city!"
"There's no electricity, no water, and no food. The food in the grocery store downstairs has started to go bad. I can't stay at home anymore. I have to escape!"
To be honest, Zhang Xiaoqiang was really afraid of death. If possible, he would rather stay at home willingly.
In this doomsday without any communication, media, or even any human interaction, he actually didn't know what to do.
There were too many dangers outside. Countless zombies were waiting for him like a lamb walking into a tiger's den. Even some animals might have started to mutate. And what was even more terrifying than these were those living people with ulterior motives and the unpredictable future.
But now, he had run out of supplies. Even though there was still some food left, it was just a drop in the bucket. What's more, it had been a whole month since the crisis broke out. His sister, who was far away in another place, was still missing. Even though the situation might be more likely to be bad than good, he couldn't give up easily before getting the real news of her death. He had to try every means to reunite with her. In just a short while, Zhang Xiaoqiang made a decision. He couldn't live in this dark and gloomy room in a muddle any longer. He had to break out of his cage, do his best to break through the siege and leave this dead city that had already been occupied by zombies. If he could get out alive, he would head south all the way to reunite with his sister. If he died, it would be a relief. There was nothing to be afraid of death.
Thinking of this, he walked towards his iron spear, opened the door. Unexpectedly, just as he reached the staircase entrance, he found that hundreds of zombies were wandering downstairs. Some of them were even gnawing on the corpses of their own kind.
Zhang Xiaoqiang stared blankly at downstairs, feeling a bit numb on his scalp. "Could it be that all the zombies on the street have come here?"
Downstairs, in the not-so-big space, zombies were packed densely. The staircase entrance from downstairs to the platform was a bit off to one side. The staircase formed an angle with the main body of the building. Hundreds of zombies were squeezed into this angle. A few zombies smelled Zhang Xiaoqiang's scent and rushed towards him.
The thick smell of blood mixed with the stench of corpses wafted over.
Two S-type zombies rushed over in just an instant.
Zhang Xiaoqiang didn't have time to think much and ran in the opposite direction of the zombies. And these two S-type zombies closely followed him. He ran in a half-arc and took a glance back. The S-type zombies were getting even closer. Six D-type zombies were following far behind, while the ordinary zombies didn't react much.
"Why are the S-type zombies so fast!" Zhang Xiaoqiang was a bit worried.
At this moment, the S-type zombies were only three to five steps away from him. It seemed that he was about to be caught up.
"Fight it out!"
He fixed his right foot, took a small half step back with his left foot, turned around and thrust out his spear.
"Kill!" Zhang Xiaoqiang shouted loudly. The spearhead stabbed into the forehead of the zombie and then he quickly twisted the spear body and pulled it out.
Another S-type zombie was already right in front of him, and its claws were reaching towards Zhang Xiaoqiang's face. He took another half step back with his right foot, tilted his body to let the zombie pass by. A withered and skinny arm with the stench of corpses brushed past his nose. Then he lifted his iron spear with both hands and swung it in the air to form a circle, and suddenly slapped it on the back of the zombie's waist.
With this blow, the zombie was sent flying forward and fell to the ground. Zhang Xiaoqiang took a few steps forward and pinned it down with his iron spear.
Zhang Xiaoqiang took a slight breath of relief. But soon, the six D-type zombies were approaching him at the pace of a normal person's long strides.
He didn't dare to be careless. He adjusted his position according to the changes in the terrain of the corridor, trying to lure them to scatter so that he could defeat them one by one. Unfortunately, these zombies just instinctively rushed towards him in unison, leaving him no chance.
Zhang Xiaoqiang took a quick look at the downstairs of the unit building and found that several ordinary zombies were still chewing there. Then an idea came to his mind!
In the next moment, Zhang Xiaoqiang led the six D-type zombies towards the corpses.
As expected, the D-type zombies collided with the ordinary zombies, causing a commotion. Taking advantage of this rare opportunity, Zhang Xiaoqiang rushed to the back of one D-type zombie and stabbed it with his spear.
He pulled back the spear body. The D-type zombie fell to the ground, pressing on an ordinary zombie. The remaining D-type zombies, however, bypassed the ordinary zombies and continued to surround him. Without time to kill a second one, Zhang Xiaoqiang led the remaining D-type zombies in circles. Five, four, three, two... When the last zombie was dealt with by him, Zhang Xiaoqiang leaned on his iron spear, gasping for breath.
And now, there were only seventy or eighty ordinary zombies left. One of them was still pinned under the body of a dead D-type zombie. The fierce fight just now hadn't caught their attention at all. Except for flesh and blood, they didn't care about anything.
Even when Zhang Xiaoqiang was standing right behind them, they didn't notice his presence.
