I'm living like a cockroach in the doomsday

Chapter 9: Chapter 9: The Last Woman

Zhang Xiaoqiang opened the iron door, took one last look at the house, and then walked out.

The anti-theft door was locked, and the key was threaded onto a thin string and hung around his neck, lying close to his chest. It would carry Zhang Xiaoqiang's spiritual sustenance in the days to come and was like a homeland for his soul.

One month after the doomsday arrived, Zhang Xiaoqiang left home and officially faced the future in the post-apocalyptic world.

On the platform, the corpses of zombies were lying in disarray on the concrete ground. Zhang Xiaoqiang didn't bother with them and walked downstairs. Although the group of zombies had dispersed yesterday, there were still over 40 zombies wandering around in the garden.

Zhang Xiaoqiang came downstairs and found a dozen or so zombies that had lost half of their bodies beside him. These zombies turned their faces towards him, opening and closing their stinking mouths, wanting to bite him but unable to get up.

He stepped over the zombies on the ground and walked towards the path leading to the street.

Using the MP9 military sniper crossbow to deal with the zombies blocking the way, he came to the street. After killing the dozens of zombies on the platform yesterday and those lingering in the downstairs garden now, there were less than a hundred zombies in total on the street within a kilometer range, with about one zombie every ten meters on average. The street leading to the city center was blocked, and the street leading to the outside of the city would take three or four hours to walk out of. There were surely zombies on the way. Although the population density was relatively low in the residential area, there were still tens of thousands of people.

Now he could only take one step at a time.

Zhang Xiaoqiang was in the middle of the street. He only needed to face the less than fifty zombies on the road leading to the end of the street. Looking at these nearly fifty zombies, he felt a bit reluctant to use the remaining steel balls. Although he had found about one and a half catties (about 0.75 kilograms) of steel balls, using one meant one less. At least he couldn't kill one zombie with each ball.

Zhang Xiaoqiang carefully moved forward along the street. He sprinkled some white liquor found in the convenience store on himself, using the pungent smell of the liquor to cover up his human scent.

Zhang Xiaoqiang held the sniper crossbow in his hands, walked on tiptoe, and carefully bypassed the pieces of glass on the ground from time to time. The iron spear was inserted into the leather buckle on the side of the backpack, with the spearhead pointing upwards. The butt of the spear knocked against his calf from time to time. He had tested that the smell of the liquor could prevent zombies from smelling him within a distance of thirty meters. Unfortunately, it didn't work within thirty meters.

Zhang Xiaoqiang bypassed the zombies one by one, being careful not to disturb them. It felt like he was playing the real-life version of the single-player game "Commandos". When encountering zombies that he really couldn't avoid, he would slowly approach within a distance of thirty meters from them, wait for them to move towards him, and then shoot them at close range with the sniper crossbow.

He didn't know how many zombies were waiting to eat him after the end of the street. Zhang Xiaoqiang could only try his best to save every bit of his strength to prepare for the unpredictable crises.

When Zhang Xiaoqiang had shot and killed the eleventh zombie and finally stood at the crossroads at the end of the street, he looked up to the sky and let out a long sigh, "Oh, what a pity!"

He had managed to get here with great difficulty, but the scene in front of him made him almost want to cry.

Going straight ahead across the crossroads was the main road leading out of the city. A heavy Dongfeng dump truck carrying sand had overturned on the road. Behind its eight-meter-long body, countless other large trucks blocked the road completely.

On the left side of the street were all building materials warehouses, which led all the way to the development zone. In the development zone, there were factories everywhere, and any one of the factories had thousands of employees, who must have all turned into zombies by now.

If Zhang Xiaoqiang dared to leave this dead city along this road, it would be like walking into a tiger's den.

As for the street on the right side, there were all kinds of small restaurants, which led all the way to the container port company by the river. There were no fewer zombies on this street than those behind Zhang Xiaoqiang. But at this moment, he had no choice but to bite the bullet and make his way towards the street leading to the riverside.

The density of zombies here was much higher than before. Zhang Xiaoqiang had a hard time walking. Sometimes he had to deal with more than four zombies at the same time. His skills in killing zombies became more proficient. Instead of waiting for the zombies to approach, he shot them from a distance. Moreover, he had killed two D-type zombies. Fortunately, he didn't encounter any S-type zombies. It was really a blessing in disguise.

To be honest, he didn't really care much about the strength-type D-type zombies. Their speed was not fast, which gave him time to aim. But when it came to the S-type zombies, he felt a bit nervous. They were so fast that he might get hurt if he wasn't careful.

After walking halfway, Zhang Xiaoqiang was about to take a break beside the tall French windows in front.

When passing by the various cars parked on the street, he couldn't help thinking, "What a pity! Why didn't I get a driver's license when I was in college?!"

Zhang Xiaoqiang complained and secretly blamed himself for not having the foresight back then. Even if he didn't get a driver's license, at least he should have known how to step on the clutch and shift gears! After taking one last look, Zhang Xiaoqiang was about to look away, but then he suddenly turned his head and stared at the window of the Mercedes-Benz in front of him. "Yes, although it's not very clear, I can see there's a figure inside!"

Zhang Xiaoqiang walked to the front of the car and looked inside through the windshield. He saw a person sitting in the passenger seat, staring blankly in the direction outside the window. She had shoulder-length hair, and her clothes were very dirty and full of filth, so that the original style and color couldn't be recognized.

"Not a zombie!"

Zhang Xiaoqiang was quite sure. He had never seen a zombie that could be so quiet. So, he opened the car door, and a stench hit him. Even his nose, which had endured the stench of corpses for a long time, could hardly bear it.

Looking closely, he saw that this person was wearing a dress whose original color couldn't be seen anymore. Her face was as pale as paper, looking a bit malnourished, but her face was relatively clean, except that her eyes were a bit cloudy.

Zhang Xiaoqiang suddenly got excited. "A woman! And... she's still alive!"
