Chapter 210: Chapter 5: God’s Agent
"However, if you want to join the Tendo Civil Security Corporation, you'll need the strength to fight Gastrea."
Rentaro Satomi looked her up and down, his tone hesitant. "No offense, but you don't look like you've had any training. How did you even get your Promoter license?"
Becoming a Promoter is both easy and difficult.
Setting aside the mixed reputation Promoters have in society, their job is straightforward: eliminate Gastrea.
In actual combat, most of the fighting is done by the Cursed Children the Initiators. However, even as a human Promoter, you can't just stand by idly. You need the ability to protect yourself.
The work of a Promoter is extremely dangerous, even for humans.
Unlike Cursed Children, who possess enhanced physical abilities and rapid healing, humans are fragile. A single serious injury from a Gastrea could mean death or worse, infection.
If infected by the Gastrea virus, a human's DNA mutates rapidly, turning them into a new Gastrea.
Without sufficient strength, the risk of death skyrockets when facing Gastrea.
This was why Rentaro questioned Nia Honjo.
First, he doubted a stay at home girl like her had much physical strength.
Second, he couldn't imagine a manga artist knowing any combat skills.
"Actually, I haven't gotten my Promoter license yet. I'm planning to apply for it tomorrow."
Nia Honjo opened a second can of beer from the fridge, took a few sips, and said casually, "But I've checked the requirements. With the number of Promoters declining in recent years, the standards have been lowered a lot. Even someone like me can get it easily~"
"After all that talk, you don't even have a license yet?" Rentaro frowned. "So you're a complete rookie no, you're not even a rookie. You haven't even entered the industry!"
"Hey, don't put it like that. If I were an experienced Promoter, I'd have applied to a better company by now!"
"Well... that's true." Rentaro scratched his cheek awkwardly. "But if you become a Promoter, the International Initiator Supervision Organization will assign you an Initiator. You need to be mentally prepared. Not every Initiator is as well behaved as Enju."
"Ah, no need. I'll just register Nibelcole as my Initiator."
"Huh? Is she a Cursed Child?" Rentaro was stunned. "But her eyes..."
"Enju's eyes aren't red either."
Cursed Children look like ordinary girls, with the only difference being their eye color.
If a child is born with red eyes, it means they're infected with the Gastrea virus.
The red eyes indicate the virus is active, but this state isn't permanent it can be suppressed.
Once they learn to control the virus, their eyes return to their original color.
Enju Aihara is one such Cursed Child who has mastered virus suppression. Her eyes only turn red during combat.
"She not a Cursed Child, but you're still registering her as an Initiator?" Rentaro's mouth twitched. "I'm not one to judge, but that's pretty irresponsible as a guardian."
"Hehe, no need to worry about that, young man."
Nia Honjo shook her beer can, her face slightly flushed after two cans. "Our hidden identities would shock you if I told you!"
"Isn't your hidden identity just being a manga artist?" Rentaro raised an eyebrow. "What else could you be? A homeless person?"
"How rude! I'm a nun, a nun!" Nia Honjo struck a pious pose.
"Nibelcole and I are chosen by God, blessed with special powers. We wield the authority of God's chosen on Earth, acting as His agents to save the world!"
"Uh... are you drunk?"
Rentaro glanced at Nia Honjo, who was lounging on the sofa in a plaid shirt and jeans, beer in hand.
Then he looked around the church, which had been stripped of its sacredness and turned into a makeshift living space.
He couldn't help but feel like he was being made a fool of.
What kind of nun drinks beer, eats dried squid, and turns a church into a bedroom?
"If Jesus really existed and saw you like this, I think he'd clean house first."
"I don't believe in Jesus, so he can't control me."
"Then what do you believe in?"
"The God of the Second Dimension."
"...What's that?"
"A deity born from the world of anime and manga."
Nia Honjo spread her arms dramatically. "Believe in our Lord, and a truck will send you to another world. Praise His name, and you'll be reborn in the 2D realm in your next life. Sounds like a great religion, right?"
"You're definitely drunk!"
This time, Rentaro tone shifted from questioning to absolute certainty.
No wonder she'd been spouting nonsense this whole time.
Not only did she want to join the failing Tendo Civil Security Corporation, but she also claimed to be in her forties or fifties, let Nibelcole take the role of an Initiator, and now she was preaching about the God of the Second Dimension.
He felt like an idiot for almost believing her.
"Ahaha, I knew no one would believe me if I told the truth outright." Nia Honjo seemed to have expected his reaction.
"But I'm not here to preach, so it doesn't matter if you believe me or not."
"I knew a couple of guys like you in high school. They always said they were the chosen ones. Are all 2D fans like this?"
"Oh? Sounds like they're still stuck in their chuunibyou phase. How youthful. I'm kind of jealous."
"Not really. They got bullied pretty badly."
"Ah, that's different." A flicker of sadness crossed Nia Honjo's face.
"It's tough being a high schooler these days. Escaping to the 2D world to avoid reality at such a young age... reminds me of myself..."
Before Rentaro could ask more, her smile returned.
"Well, let's not dwell on sad things. Since you're here, why not stay for dinner with Enju before you go?"
Nia Honjo stood up and walked to the kitchen, taking over the dinner Nibelcole hadn't finished preparing.
"As payment for the meal, how about you come with me tomorrow when I register for my Promoter license~?"
