Chapter 13: Chapter 12
"Our country still uses those standardized records to set average benchmarks. It's completely unreasonable, but that's the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology neglecting its duties."
Aizawa Shouta slipped his phone back into his pocket and turned his tired gaze on Shin.
"Shin—you placed first in the practical exam, correct? How far could you throw a softball in junior high?"
"…Ten meters?"
Shin genuinely had no idea. He'd never done a softball throw in this world's schools, and even back in the Tian Dynasty before he crossed over, he hadn't cared much for such activities.
"…"
Aizawa was silent for a long moment. Given that Shin's Quirk was Hypnosis, he decided not to press the point.
"Since Hypnosis doesn't seem especially helpful for throwing a ball," he continued flatly, "let's try someone else."
He turned to Bakugo Katsuki.
"Bakugo—how far could you throw in junior high?"
"Sixty-seven meters," Bakugo said at once.
He turned and shot Shin a look full of open provocation.
"Alright," Aizawa said, "you're free to use your Quirk. As long as you don't step outside the circle, you can do whatever you like. Show me your full power."
"Tch… Fine," Bakugo muttered.
He took the softball from Aizawa and began rolling his shoulders, flexing his right hand as sparks gathered around his palm.
"I'll add an explosive boost to the throw…"
With a roar, he swung his arm, a burst of orange flame erupting behind the ball and blasting it forward in a blazing arc.
"First, you need to know exactly where your limits are. That's the only way to lay a foundation for becoming a hero," Aizawa said calmly.
He held up the measuring device in his hand.
When the numbers appeared, the class collectively sucked in a breath.
"Seven hundred and five meters… are you kidding me?"
"What the hell?! Using Quirks makes this insane!"
"Just as you'd expect from U.A.—they let you push your Quirk to the limit!"
"Interesting?" Aizawa's voice grew flat, his eyes narrowing.
"You think this is interesting? You're about to train to become professionals who put their lives on the line, and you call it 'fun'?"
He let out a sigh that sounded more like a growl.
"Fine—then let me be very clear. In this assessment, whoever places last overall will be expelled."
"And don't think about going to the principal to complain. I'm your homeroom teacher. I have the authority to eliminate you. Because this… is the Hero Course of U.A. High School."
"WHAT?!"
...
Uraraka Ochaco raised her hand nervously.
"Sensei… isn't this a little unreasonable? Eliminating someone on the very first day? We all came here because we want to become heroes—none of us wants to be expelled…"
"Natural disasters, large-scale accidents, and villains with no regard for your feelings won't be reasonable, either."
Aizawa's gaze swept over them, dispassionate.
"I'm giving you your first lesson: survival of the fittest. When you become heroes, you'll face far harsher situations than this."
"If you want to be the kind of hero who can stand tall in front of the people you care about, show me every last bit of your strength."
His voice dropped to a murmur.
"For those who pass, U.A. will spare no effort to give you the best resources—and the harshest training. If you're confident… then let the test begin."
Beside Shin, Yaoyorozu Momo frowned slightly, her gaze lowered as if she were lost in thought.
"…To be eliminated right away…" she murmured.
"Tch. He's like Kakashi," Shin thought, glancing at Aizawa with a wry smile. He couldn't help remembering how Kakashi had pulled something similar back in Naruto.
"Alright. The demonstration is over."
Aizawa lowered his head to check his measuring device.
"First event: the fifty-meter dash."
...
Fifty-meter dash: five seconds flat.
Grip strength: one hundred kilograms.
Standing long jump: fifteen meters.
Repeated side steps: two hundred times.
Softball throw: one hundred eighty-two meters.
Sit-ups: one hundred two.
Seated forward bend: twenty-five centimeters.
Endurance run: three minutes.
These were Shin's results—solidly above average even without any Quirks that boosted raw physical power.
Though there were a few small incidents along the way, the Quirk Apprehension Test concluded without issue.
"His Quirk doesn't improve physical strength, but these numbers are impressive," Aizawa thought, studying the clipboard.
Does this kid train constantly?
"Alright," he said finally.
"Time to announce the results. Overall ranking is simple—just the total of all scores. Explaining them one by one is a waste of time, so I'll post everything at once."
Whirr—
A transparent panel rose up before them, displaying the total points and ranks of all twenty students.
Shin was in tenth place, right in the middle of the class.
Bakugo Katsuki was first. As expected, Izuku Midoriya was last.
"…Before I forget," Aizawa added blandly, "the thing about expulsion was a lie."
The entire class froze.
"It's the most straightforward way to force you to bring out your full potential. If I'd said it kindly, you would have held back."
A trace of a smile flickered over his exhausted face.
"Hypocritical."
"…Huh?"
Midoriya's mouth worked soundlessly. After all his worrying, he looked like he might pass out.
"This concludes the test," Aizawa said, turning away.
"There are materials in the classroom about your lesson plans. Read them carefully when you get back."
And with that, he trudged off across the field without looking back, his long hair swinging behind him.
Only his listless, slumping back remained.
"…Ehh?!"
