Chapter 25: Side Story 1
Inside the Batmobile, the engine rumbled low as the city's shadows flickered across the windows like ghosts.
"Batman, the army's about to move in on Bane," Tim said, watching the city rush past. "How long do you think the fight will last?"
"That depends...." Bruce replied. "... on how Bane chooses to fight."
"They're sending everything—forty thousand soldiers, tanks, support units. That's serious firepower." Tim exhaled, as if trying to let go of the tension in his chest.
"So… I guess Bane's problem is about to be dealt with."
Bruce responded slowly, "Dealt with? When did I say Bane would lose?"
Tim stared at him. "What? You think he'll win? He's just one man."
"No. He's not," Bruce said. "Bane is a monster."
"Against this level of army deployment ... even I could win, although it would be difficult. But bane is worse compared to me"
Tim shook his head. "But… the numbers—an entire battalion. That should mean something."
"Numbers don't matter when you're fighting someone like him," Bruce said. "Against monsterslike him, quantity fails. You need quality."
There was a long silence between them, heavy in the confined space of the car.
Tim looked down. "Then... a lot of soldiers are going to die, aren't they?"
"Yes."
"Can't we stop it? Can't we do something?"
"Not yet," Bruce said. "I'm not ready to face him...yet."
Tim's voice edged with frustration. "You've got the strongest weapons in your arsenal. There has to be something—"
"Weapons mean nothing if they don't hit," Bruce interrupted. "And Bane won't let them hit him."
Tim leaned back in the seat, staring at the roof of the Batmobile like he might find answers there. "Is the U.S. military really that helpless? Unless they use weapons of mass destruction?"
"You're underestimating them," Bruce said. "They have trump cards. Weapons you don't see on the surface."
Tim turned toward him. "Like what?"
Bruce glanced over. "Robots."
"...Robots?"
The Batmobile eased to a stop. Outside, the night lay still and silent, like a breath held too long.
Bruce unlatched his seatbelt.
"We're here. And that... is a story for another time."
