In Frieren as a 1000 years old Demon

Chapter 3: Chapter 3 - Test 1

Looking at the short, white-haired, expressionless elf before him, several terms and vague images from Agusheed's long-forgotten past life memories unexpectedly surfaced.

"I think I happened to watch some anime in my past life featuring this white-haired elf as the protagonist."

"What was it called again..."

"Hmm... 'The Gifted Furong King'?"

Shaking his head, Agusheed cast those blurry images aside. For him, recalling so-called plotlines wasn't important at all.

Because he fundamentally didn't care about future developments.

Moreover, knowing the future wasn't necessarily a good thing.

The Demon King's chief strategist, the Omniscient One Shurahadt, possessed magic capable of foreseeing a thousand years into the future. He wouldn't permit others who could predict the future to exist.

Though Agusheed wasn't afraid of confronting Shurahadt, he disliked unnecessary trouble. So rather than knowing the future, Agusheed was more fixated on regaining his humanity.

"But... a protagonist?" Agusheed showed rare interest.

"Frieren."

Beside him, Furame chuckled happily and placed her hand on the white-haired elf's head as she approached.

"Patting like this will stunt my growth, Furame."

"You've already stopped growing, haven't you?"

Though saying this, Furame still removed her hand, giving the short elf some hope of growing taller.

"I'm only a few hundred years old. Give me another thousand years and I'll definitely grow taller."

Frieren showed complete indifference to Furame's prejudice on her face. Then, looking expectantly at Furame, she extended one hand.

"Gift."

Furame glanced sideways at Agusheed behind her. Though Agusheed showed no expression, Frieren's behavior made her earlier words hard to believe.

"Sigh..."

Furame massaged her forehead with one hand before turning sideways to reveal Agusheed standing behind her.

"I'll give you a test. Pass it and you'll get any magic book you want."

"I want [Magic That Kills Mosquitoes With Just a Glance]."

Without even hearing the test's content, Frieren immediately stated her desired magic.

"Ten years have passed, yet you're still the same..."

"What are you talking about? It's only been ten years. Why would I change?"

Another long-lived species' perception of a decade made Furame sigh softly.

"Alright, back to the matter—"

Furame pointed at Agusheed standing motionless behind her.

Following her gesture, Frieren noticed this utterly unremarkable person who'd be easily overlooked.

"Frieren, what can you see about him?"

Furame posed the question.

Agusheed cooperatively approached Frieren for closer inspection.

"Hmm—"

Frieren drew out her murmur while carefully examining expressionless Agusheed.

One second, two seconds.

One minute, two minutes.

"Fluctuating... magical power is fluctuating. Amazing... this terrifying magical energy is actually suppressed..."

Frieren gave her answer.

Agusheed's face showed no surprise.

"I told you it was meaningless."

"Furame, go handle your business. I'll wait outside."

After saying this to Furame, Agusheed turned and walked toward the palace exit.

He'd only entered to verify Furame's claim. Since the result held no surprises, there was no reason to stay.

After all, Furame still needed to meet the emperor alone.

So he'd simply wait outside.

And to think she exceeded my expectations—

No different from those court mages earlier.

So this is all the protagonist amounts to.

Just another mortal born in mine and Furame's era.

Tap tap tap...

After several steps, Agusheed suddenly sensed something amiss.

Because in his perception, Frieren hadn't moved at all since he turned away.

Moreover, he now heard Furame's laughter behind him.

Highly pleased laughter.

Thus, Agusheed stopped.

He turned back, calmly observing the motionless Frieren.

"What did you see?"

"Besides magical fluctuations, what else did you see about me?"

Staring at his unchanging reflection in Frieren's pupils, Agusheed actively asked a question for the first time.

From Frieren's perspective,

The moment Agusheed turned around,

She sensed two contours atop his head that weren't human organs.

"Horns..."

"A demon's... horns..."

Dazedly, Frieren voiced the unreasonable intuition she'd sensed about Agusheed.

Then instinctively—

She unleashed the fastest, most lethal magic she knew.

[Annihilation Thunder Release Magic]

By the time she remembered this demon had been brought by Furame personally, it was too late.

The distance was under ten meters.

At this range, almost no mage could react defenselessly to an instant attack.

Especially the extremely swift [Annihilation Thunder Release Magic].

Realizing she couldn't recall the magic,

Frieren immediately looked to her teacher beside her—

The current era's strongest mage.

Only to see...

Furame's face full of schadenfreude.

Before she could question why her teacher wore such an expression—

Agusheed provided the answer.

A slash invisible to the naked eye tore through [Annihilation Thunder Release Magic] with overwhelming force.

Both side walls and the library door behind showed deep gashes.

Even a lock of Frieren's white hair was severed, scattering to the ground.

"How rude—"

Agusheed remarked.

"But identical to Furame's first reaction upon meeting me. Like teacher, like student?"

Agusheed wasn't angered—instead, he grew somewhat appreciative of Frieren.

"I concede, Furame. Your disciple is as exceptional as you claimed."

After a deep look at the gleeful Furame, Agusheed departed without further delay.

...

"Furame, why?"

Frieren looked puzzled at Furame, who stood arms crossed.

"What do you mean?"

Furame unfolded her arms while producing the [Magic That Kills Mosquitoes With Just a Glance] Frieren wanted.

"That person... he's a Great Demon, right?"

Frieren pressed anxiously.

Placing the magic book atop Frieren's head, Furame answered softly:

"Correct. He's a genuine Great Demon who nearly became one of the [Seven Deadly Sages]."

Taking the book down and verifying its cover, Frieren grew even more confused.

"Then why is he with you?"

"Why shouldn't he be with me?"

"'Demons took everything from me. I hate them to the bone and want to exterminate them all.' Didn't you say that yourself?"

Furame nodded without denial.

Clutching the magic book, Frieren stared incomprehensibly at her teacher.

"Then why..."

Though Frieren didn't finish, she trusted Furame understood.

"Because he's unique among demons."

Furame smiled slightly, pinching Frieren's cheeks.

"He's the only demon in history who seeks humanity and refuses to harm humans..."

"For five hundred years, this has remained true."
