Chapter 33: The Scepter Secured & An Unforeseen Glitch

The exfiltration was going smoothly. Wanda's 'Mind Veil' kept the patrolling guards disoriented, and Pietro's 'Phantom Steps' ensured their passage through the ventilation system remained undetected. Adam, watching from his perch, felt the tension begin to ease. They had the Scepter. They had defied the timeline.

"Almost at the boiler room exit," Pietro whispered, his voice slightly muffled by the comms. "Clear."

"Wait," Adam said, his eyes glued to 'Ghost's' real-time security feed. A flickering icon. "A new patrol. Unscheduled. Coming from the east wing. They're heading directly for your exfil point. And it's… Strucker."

Baron Von Strucker, flanked by two heavily armed HYDRA agents, was heading straight for the boiler room. Fate, it seemed, wasn't done playing games.

"Wanda, Pietro, new intel," Adam barked, adrenaline spiking. "Strucker is coming. You're five seconds from intersecting his patrol path. He's looking for something. You're too close to double back."

"Crap!" Pietro hissed. "No time to get out of the vent without being seen. What do we do?!"

"Hold position in the vent!" Adam commanded, thinking furiously. "Wanda, hit them with the Infrasound Scrambler. Pietro, prepare the Micro-EMPs for their comms. Strucker isn't looking for you. He's looking for something else. Create a diversion."

Wanda immediately activated the scrambler. The low hum, imperceptible to human hearing, began to subtly affect Strucker and his men. Their movements became subtly off, a slight stumble here, a fleeting look of confusion there.

Adam winced. Negative GP. That was going to hurt.

Strucker, however, was a stubborn old Nazi. He stopped right outside the boiler room door, directly below where Wanda and Pietro were hidden in the ventilation shaft.

"That energy surge..." Strucker muttered, his voice gruff, audible on 'Ghost's' compromised external mics. "The Scepter... I felt it. Something's wrong."

He motioned to his men. "Check the perimeter! All of it! I felt a disturbance in the energy field! Something was activated!"

This was the unforeseen glitch. Strucker didn't know they were there, but he knew something had happened with the Scepter.

"Pietro, now! Micro-EMPs on the far wall, near the electrical conduit!" Adam ordered. "Wanda, hold the scrambler, but push a small telekinetic burst to trip an alarm on the other side of the complex! Create a distraction!"

Pietro, moving with incredible speed and precision, tossed two tiny Micro-EMP grenades. They detonated with soft pops near the conduit, causing a small explosion of sparks and a sudden, localized power outage. At the same instant, a blaring alarm echoed from the opposite side of the complex.

Strucker cursed. "What in the hell?! Investigate the west sector! Now! And this electrical fault! Get it fixed!"

He and his men immediately moved away from the boiler room, distracted by the sudden chaos. It was a close shave.

"Go! Go! Go!" Adam yelled.

Wanda and Pietro dropped from the vent, silent as shadows, and darted into the cover of the nearby tree line. Pietro clutched the contained Scepter tightly.

"We're out, Adam!" Pietro puffed, breathless but exhilarated. "That was… cutting it close!"

"Too close," Adam muttered, looking at his plummeting GP balance. "-34.25 GP. This better be worth it. But hey, mission accomplished. The Scepter is secured."

He knew Strucker wouldn't know who took it, just that it was gone, and that would force his hand. The timeline was still trying to correct itself, but Adam had just pulled a major heist. Ultron's birth just got a little more complicated.
