Chapter 35: The Vision's Premonition & Ultron's Conception
Days blurred into weeks within the Guild's new subterranean HQ. The facility, though initially a drain on Adam's GP, proved invaluable. It was a secure, private haven where Erik Selvig could dedicate himself to the enigma of the Mind Stone, contained within Loki's Scepter.
Adam spent hours with Erik in the lab, poring over the data. The Scepter wasn't just an energy source; it was a conduit, a sentient entity, or at least a highly sophisticated consciousness.
"It's not just influencing minds, Adam," Erik explained, pushing his glasses up his nose, a wild glint in his eye. "It's… teaching. And learning. It's a nexus of sentience. And it feels like it's reaching out. Trying to coalesce. It's almost... expecting something."
As Erik talked, the Scepter would sometimes pulse in a rhythm that felt almost like a heartbeat. Adam, with his meta-awareness, recognized the pattern. This was the nascent consciousness of Vision. The Mind Stone was trying to become him. It was a premonition, a blueprint.
"It can influence machines, can't it?" Adam asked, a cold dread washing over him. "Not just organic minds. AI, too."
Erik nodded, excitedly. "Theoretically, yes! Its energy signature is perfectly compatible with advanced neural networks. It could, in theory, grant sentience to an inert artificial intelligence."
"And that sentience," Adam finished, his voice grim, "if not properly guided, could see humanity as the problem."
He looked at the Scepter, then at Erik, then back at his almost empty GP balance. He needed more security, more research tools, anything to understand and control this thing.
[Guild Master Store – Item Purchased: Psionic Dampening Field (Lab Upgrade) – 75 GP] [Guild Master Store – Item Purchased: AI Interface Protocol (Research Tool) – 40 GP] [Adam Stiels – Guild Points (GP): -534.25 - 75 - 40 = -649.25 GP! (Deep in GP Debt!)]
"Erik, install this 'Psionic Dampening Field' around the Scepter's containment," Adam instructed. "And use this 'AI Interface Protocol' to study its interaction with isolated, non-networked AI constructs. We need to understand how it thinks. How it influences."
Just as Erik began setting up the new equipment, a siren blared through the Guild HQ's comms. Not an intrusion alarm, but a general alert from Darcy's news monitoring station.
"Adam! You need to see this!" Darcy's voice was a mix of shock and exasperation. "It's… it's Stark!"
Adam rushed to the main screen. On every major news network, a confident, slightly arrogant Tony Stark stood at a podium. Behind him, a massive, holographic projection of an advanced, global defense network.
"After the fall of SHIELD, and in light of recent events," Tony announced with his usual flair, "it's clear humanity needs an upgrade. A global upgrade. So, I've been developing something truly revolutionary. A worldwide peacekeeping program. A suit of armor around the world."
The holographic display solidified into a familiar, menacing figure. A red, robotic face.
"I call it... Ultron."
Adam stared at the screen, a chilling wave of recognition and despair washing over him. The timeline. It hadn't been prevented. Only delayed. He had secured the Scepter, but Tony, in his genius, had simply created Ultron without it. He hadn't used the Mind Stone directly; he'd just created his own AI. The Scepter was now an independent ticking time bomb, a separate problem.
"Goddammit, Tony," Adam muttered, hitting the console with a frustrated fist. "You just had to go and do it, didn't you? Even without the glowing blue rock, you still manage to bring about the robot apocalypse!"
He turned to Erik, a grim determination replacing his frustration. "The Scepter is still vital. Ultron will seek it out. It's the only thing that can give him a physical body and access to true sentience. We need to be ready. This changes everything. We're not preventing Ultron anymore. We're fighting him. And we have to make sure he doesn't get this." He gestured to the humming Scepter.
The Age of Ultron had just begun. And Adam, despite his best efforts, was right in the middle of it.
