Chapter 30: Ch 30. Research Center x Spies x Mito Uzumaki
Ron is now 4 years old. On his recent birthday, he presented books he had written to his parents and uncle, asking them to read them. With printing technology readily available, reproducing the books posed no challenge.
Over the past four years, Ron has refrained from engaging in any ninjutsu-related knowledge or training. Instead, he has devoted himself to calming his mind and mastering meditation, enabling him to better control his mental capabilities.
Ron possesses exceptional cognitive abilities, allowing him to derive constant insights from his surroundings. For example, in the past, merely watching a leaf fall from a tree would lead him to automatically calculate its trajectory, motion, and other mathematical factors. While impressive, this involuntary process was mentally exhausting and caused him to lose focus on more meaningful pursuits.
Initially, Ron reveled in his intellectual prowess, analyzing everything around him. However, he eventually realized that repetitive observations, like calculating the fall of leaves, were unproductive and tedious.
Through meditation, he learned to quiet his mind and direct his insights selectively, rather than allowing them to occur automatically. This discipline not only brought him relief but also deepened his control over his extraordinary cognitive powers.
Hidden within Kumogakure's mountain ranges, the Hollow Mountain Research Center serves as a secretive hub for engineering and technological innovation. In addition, the surrounding area is closed off like the Death Forest from Konoha for testing and building various things.
Ninjas and scholars collaborate to develop new technologies and explore practical applications of ninjutsu, such as using elemental techniques for construction and creation. Thunder/Fire-style and Earth-style ninjas, in particular, play a crucial role in advancing these projects.
Under Ron's guidance, experts from diverse fields have come together not only to integrate their knowledge but also to structure it into a systematic, step-by-step learning framework.
Among them, a Special Jonin named Ed stands out as one of the key researchers. He has the most direct contact with Ron and is responsible for overseeing various projects and personnel based on Ron's ideas. While many in the research center have heard of Ron, only Ed knows his true appearance and age. He deeply admires Ron's intellect and respects his insights.
For Ron, Ed is an ideal conversation partner, as he bridges both civilian technology and chakra-based innovations. Ron suspects that Ed may have originally been the mind behind Kumogakure's Huge Chakra Cannon.
Kumogakure has undergone significant advancements in its intelligence and communication systems. Under Ron's guidance, the village now employs a summoning-based communication network, enabling spies to relay urgent information without risking exposure.
In addition, Ron introduced the concept of civilian spies to complement the efforts of ninja operatives. These civilians, chosen from individuals with families and strong ties to the Land of Lightning, are strategically integrated into merchant groups both within Kumogakure and throughout the ninja world. Their role is to gather intelligence while blending seamlessly into their surroundings.
For instance, in major ninja villages like Konoha, migrant workers from Kumogakure provide valuable opportunities for covert intelligence collection. Ninja spies, on the other hand, focus on capitals and major cities, where significant political and economic decisions are made. This includes monitoring interactions between ninja villages and Daimyo prefectures, which often collaborate on key matters such as war efforts.
These spies gather a wide range of information, including economic conditions, corrupt officials, influential families, powerful clans, and smaller ninja organizations. While conventional spies infiltrate various village departments or serve as civilian ninjas, strict inspections and memory searches prevent them from taking on critical roles, such as joining ANBU. However, infiltrating the medical departments remains a viable option for acquiring valuable information.
This dual-layered approach, combining ninja and civilian espionage, has significantly enhanced Kumogakure's ability to stay informed about developments across the ninja world, leading to the rise of information ninjas and specialists led by Dodai and various experts and even officials under the Daimyo; these people are constantly analyzing what is happening in the ninja world and recording it, as intelligence is key.
In the past year, a significant shift occurred in Konoha's atmosphere. Unlike what Sarutobi Hiruzen and the village leadership had anticipated, the truth about the abandonment of the Uzumaki Clan became widely known among both civilian and clan-affiliated ninjas. The official narrative that Konoha had been unable to save their allies due to external pressures crumbled as details of Danzo's supposed "heroic" actions surfaced globally, raising doubts.
Ordinary ninjas, who once would have believed in Konoha's pure intentions, began to wonder about the village's actions. The lack of any rescued Uzumaki survivors appearing in Konoha further fueled these suspicions. What might have been seen as an unavoidable tragedy was now viewed as a deliberate failure by the village leadership and its influential clans.
This revelation undermined the Will of Fire's influence, leaving many ninjas disillusioned and less optimistic about Konoha's moral standing.
Even Senju Tsunade, who was expected to revolutionize Konoha's medical system and play a pivotal role during the Third Ninja World War, chose to leave the village. Her departure was influenced by her grandmother, Uzumaki Mito, who, understanding the grim reality of the Uzumaki Clan's destruction and Danzo's and other's manipulative attempts to exploit their suffering, became deeply disheartened.
Mito, recognizing that she could not leave Konoha herself due to her role as the Nine-Tails Jinchūriki, urged Tsunade to depart while she still had the chance. She wanted her granddaughter to escape the hypocrisy and growing darkness of the village. Knowing Tsunade could leave without being branded a traitor, due to her strength, Mito saw this as an opportunity to protect her from Konoha's decline.
Mito resigned to her fate and awaited her eventual passing and the transfer of the Nine-Tails to Kushina. Until then, she resolved to remain strong, ensuring that Tsunade could forge her path away from Konoha's increasingly tarnished legacy, without being labeled as a rebel by those who wanted no more existence of Senju and Uzumaki.
