Chapter 40: Chapter 40 – Special Training

"Oh? You want me to train you? With your strength, as long as you don't run into Kakashi, you should have no problem beating any other genin."

Orochimaru's distinct raspy voice echoed through the room. He didn't even bother turning around as he fiddled with something on the operating table.

Behind him, Kiyosuke said, "Kurenai and Asuma are both training. If I don't go too, it just feels... weird. Orochimaru-sensei, do you have any really powerful jutsu? Something that could end a fight in one move?"

"A one-hit kill? Hmm… I do have one, but it's a mutually assured destruction kind of jutsu. Want to learn that?"

"Nope, nope, I'd rather not die. I'm just looking for something strong."

"In that case, start working on chakra shape transformation. With your talent, it's about time you began learning it."

"Shape transformation?"

"Yes, chakra shape transformation," Orochimaru said as he put down the experiment in his hands and began instructing his student.

There are two primary ways to enhance a jutsu: chakra nature transformation and shape transformation.

Nature transformation refers to changing the chakra's elemental properties—wind, fire, water, lightning, and earth. Combining two types can result in a kekkei genkai. Three leads to a kekkei tōta, and seven… that would be a legendary kekkei mōra.

Shape transformation, on the other hand, molds chakra into a specific "form" to influence a jutsu's power and range. It makes techniques more refined and personalized.

"The Rasengan, which Minato created, is the pinnacle of shape transformation. However, you already have unnatural control over fire. What you need to learn now is shape transformation with wind-natured chakra."

Orochimaru explained.

"Huh? How do I even begin with that?"

Kiyosuke twirled a flame in the palm of his hand, frowning. He could turn his body into fire and control it with terrifying precision. But when it came to wind-natured chakra, he had no idea where to start.

"That's where… training comes in!" Orochimaru's eyes gleamed ominously.

"O-Orochimaru-sensei, please no!" Kiyosuke trembled.

...

Konoha Training Grounds

"Wind-natured chakra has a slicing quality. If you master its shape transformation, you can coat your weapons with it and make them incredibly sharp."

Orochimaru held up a kunai and channeled wind chakra into it. With a single swing near the ground—without even touching it—a deep gash appeared in the earth.

"Without dōjutsu like the Sharingan or Byakugan, only sensory-type ninja can detect it. It's a good way to catch your opponent off guard."

Not all chakra is visible. Lightning, fire, and water styles often have distinct visual manifestations, but wind is different. Wind has no color, no shape. It's like air—intangible, invisible—yet you can sense it. Wind-style jutsu are often formless and unpredictable. Not everyone is born with the Uchiha clan's Sharingan or the Hyūga clan's Byakugan to see chakra.

And sensory-types are rare.

"But I don't even know where to begin with wind-natured chakra. I can handle fire chakra easily though."

He held out his palm, and a flame erupted from it, morphing into a fire serpent that coiled around him. Then, from its mouth, another smaller serpent emerged.

Watching Kiyosuke play his matryoshka game of fire snakes, Orochimaru said,

"If you can control fire chakra like that, then you should be able to control wind too. You're just not used to it yet. You need to learn how to consciously use the wind chakra in your body—stop defaulting to fire. Until the Chūnin Exams begin, you're only allowed to use wind-style. Fire-style is off-limits. No exceptions—unless it's life or death."

This restriction wasn't out of cruelty—it was to force Kiyosuke to develop his wind abilities. Relying on one trick wasn't sustainable for a shinobi. That kind of thing rarely worked long-term.

And with Kiyosuke's potential, it was practically guaranteed he'd become a jōnin one day. Better to suffer a little now than die in the future because of half-baked skills.

"Got it." Kiyosuke nodded and extinguished the flame in his hand, switching gears to focus on wind-style.

"Sense your wind chakra and guide it out. Just like when you use other jutsu. For now, start by slicing a leaf in half." Orochimaru placed a leaf between Kiyosuke's hands, helping him train to switch between chakra types at will.

"Okay! But this is too slow… Shadow Clone Jutsu!"

Poof! Poof! Poof! Poof!

Forty shadow clones appeared around him, each holding a leaf between their fingers.

"Alright, everyone! We've got one afternoon—cut your leaf in half!"

"Got it!"

The clones responded in unison and dove into their training.

"Using shadow clones, huh? That's actually a pretty smart method." Orochimaru nodded. Kiyosuke didn't need much hand-holding. As a teacher, Orochimaru was beginning to feel a little underutilized.

Maybe… it's time to take on another student?

Watching Kiyosuke work so hard, Orochimaru made up his mind. Maybe he'd take on a girl this time. He began thinking over this year's Academy graduates, wondering if there were any promising candidates...

Meanwhile, Kiyosuke and his clones kept at it, pouring wind chakra into their leaves. As time passed, more and more clones disappeared from chakra depletion.

But with each one that vanished, the experience returned to Kiyosuke. His control over wind chakra grew smoother and more precise.

"I did it!"

One of the clones raised his hand triumphantly, holding up a leaf split clean down the middle. He burst into laughter—just before disappearing in a puff of smoke.

The remaining clones and Kiyosuke immediately received the knowledge and experience—and soon, leaf after leaf was sliced in two.

Orochimaru glanced up from his research notes and said,

"That's just the beginning. Burn this feeling into your memory—and keep going."

"Right!"

Kiyosuke nodded and resumed his training.

"You have to internalize this until it becomes instinct," Orochimaru continued. "On the battlefield, you won't have time to slowly gather chakra. Got it?"

"Understood!"

There's no time to charge up flashy techniques in a real fight. Everything needed to become second nature—basic attacks, no setup required.

"Kiyosuke-kun, your unique constitution makes you very effective in combat. Most conventional attacks won't even touch you. But don't get complacent. Dead geniuses aren't geniuses."

Orochimaru had seen too many promising shinobi die in war—wasted talent that vanished too soon. He didn't want his student to end up like Nawaki.

Kiyosuke said, "I know. I don't want to die either."

"Good. That survival instinct is important. Remember one thing—on the battlefield, staying alive comes first. Everything else is secondary."

That was a lesson forged from years of experience. If you're dead, the mission is meaningless.

"I get it. I really do."
