In the Academy as Sukuna

Chapter 23: Calculated Carnage

"The past has a way of catching up to you, especially when you least expect it"

(POV: Ryomen Sukuna)

That was quite fun, Eva immediately forfeiting wasn't expected by anyone.

Well, I ain't attending the award ceremony because it's probably boring, so currently, I'm just riding my car to my parents' mansion.

They called me while the Tournament was going on and asked me to come to celebrate my birthday.

.

I reached the mansion and I saw my parents waving at me. Beside them were two familiar faces, a guy and a girl.

These two were my childhood friends, both one year younger than me.

The guy had slightly long blond hair, and was quite tall for his age. He was wearing casual clothes and was looking at me with a small smile, which felt forced for some reason.

There was a girl beside him. She had long black hair that fell to her waist.

She too, was wearing casual clothes, a skirt and a shirt, and was waving at me with a big smile.

To introduce these two, the blond guy was Evon Craig and the girl was Anne Acton.

Both were High Nobles, we met during early childhood and used to stick together all day.

When it was announced that I didn't have any mana, they both didn't leave my side, Anne started to support me even more, while Evon started feeling a little...distant, but he supported me nonetheless.

Our relationship was stable until I had to go to the Academy, and we haven't contacted each other in a while.

On second thought, it is SO OBVIOUS that Evon is in love with Anne, but she's too dense to get a hint.

While it is even MORE OBVIOUS that Anne is in love with me, but I'm too dense to get a hint, well, I'm acting the part.

As for the reason? Having her as a lover is too troublesome.

She had nothing special to her name, no exceptional strength, neither is she intelligent, nor does she have any feats.

How will I accomplish my goals of chaos and more importantly, dropkicking orphans if she's following me everywhere?

So I'm just acting dense until she gets tired of trying, or till she gets together with Evon, or till she dies, whichever comes first.

Anyhow, these two will be joining me in my birthday party. Well, let's have some fun I guess.

(POV: Johan Wolff)

"I knew I couldn't win this event with Sukuna participating, but I didn't expect someone like Eva to come and defeat me so easily, haha," the boy sitting beside me, Ryogaku said, whisper-laughing at the end.

His humbleness pisses me off, he made Eva go all out in the fight.

"That's fine, BUT I DIDN'T EVEN GET TO THE SEMI-FINALS!" I screamed, slumping back into my seat.

We had just finished the Tournament.

It's fine that I didn't win, I expected that as Sukuna was participating, but I didn't expect to get eliminated in the quarter-finals.

I wanted to pay back for that punch he hit me with during sparring.

Fine. I couldn't fight him, I was alright with that, at least I can see him fight and learn from it.

But noooooo, the girl just had to immediately forfeit her match.

I had made Sukuna my final goal, but it infuriated me knowing that he didn't even need to use most of his attacks to win this Tournament.

I can't even beat Ryo, currently, who would be beaten in seconds when facing that bastard.

He is like an unreachable being.

Sometimes I wonder if I will ever reach that level of strength, if I will ever be...the strongest.

No...being the strongest was never my goal.

My goal was to oppose demons, to make them pay.

They took my mom's life in front of my eyes. I saw how much she suffered when the demon was eating her alive.

That same demon put this mark on me, something that will not let me forget that day.

I wonder if that demon is inside this mark somewhere, looking at my weakness and laughing.

I realized that everyone in the bus was looking at us.

"What?" I said, as not knowing what I had done.

My three friends sighed together and apologized to the passengers.

"Do you all want to eat after we get back?" Ryo asked, trying to diffuse my irritation.

"Sure, I'm famished," Anny said, a little smile on her face as she closed her eyes.

"Me too!" Alexia exclaimed, she was quite excited.

"Sure, ice cream." I responded. Ryo nodded and crossed his arms, leaning back into the seat, closing his eyes.

I looked out the window towards the Academy building that was approaching us.

A sense of unease gripped my heart, I couldn't help but feel that something was wrong.

(POV: Eva Helion)

I sighed as I dropped onto my bed, not bothering to change my clothes.

Finishing the long bus ride, my body ached for rest, but sleep was the furthest thing from my mind right now.

My mind was running, contemplating the deal I'd made with that boy - Ryomen Sukuna, becoming a slave to him.

But, he didn't use a mana contract, did he trust me this much?

A little chuckle escaped my lips. Trust wasn't the word that could be used to describe our relationship.

Behind his playful and nonchalant exterior lied something cold and calculating, something that sent shivers down my spine.

The state of my family plagued my mind, now reduced to just me and a few distant relatives, who had no intention to help me, and was being suppressed by other nobles.

They were trying to destroy it completely, evoking our noble status and lowering out family name, our decades of legacy, to mere commoners.

But now, with the support of a World Noble, those problems are basically dealt with.

As for the information abo–

*BOOM*

The ground trembled beneath me as I shot up from the bed.

"ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS, THERE IS AN ATTACK, THREAT LEVEL 10. EVACUATE FOLLOWING THE METHOD EXPLAINED!"

I took in a sharp breath. A threat level 10 was the highest level possible, an event capable of leveling the whole academy.

Ignoring my weariness, I picked up a ring which was kept on the table. As I put it on, my mother's face flickered in my mind, giving me a sense of comfort and safety.

Adrenaline coursed through my blood as I ran out of my room.

The students were in a rush, running to the emergency exits in anything but a single file.

Sounds of blasts and fire assaulted our ears as we struggled to escape at once.

The teachers were holding back the attackers, but they couldn't last long, all the students were now on their own, and they witnessed something that would be remembered by each one of them till their death.

. . .

"WHAT ARE THOSE BIG BLACK THINGS!?"

"THEY'RE COMING CLOSER, ATTACK"

"THEY ARE RESISTANT TO FIRE, SO U–AAAH"

. . .

Students were getting attacked by some...creatures, which were covered in a black mist.

But, for some reason, I felt that those...things, had not attacked with the intention to kill.

I did not care how many of my classmates died, they are nothing but tools to me to achieve my goal.

I ran as fast as I could, struggling a bit as I had exerted myself quite a lot during the Tournament.

I burst out into the courtyard of the academy. Seeing the sight, I froze on the spot.

The academy grounds were a battlefield. Flames lit the buildings, and the air was thick with smoke and the scent of burning.

Students screamed and ran in all directions, their faces masks of terror.

My heart pounded in my chest as I darted through the chaos, my eyes scanning for an escape route.

Something caught my eye as I maneuvered around the academy, the creatures were being assisted by humans clad in dark robes.

A realization hit my mind, this wasn't a random attack, but a calculated one.

Black mist swirled around the monstrous creatures, their eyes glowing ominously. My breath caught in my throat as I saw an arm swing towards me.

The arm was glowing in an orange light. The heat from the arm made my face feel hotter as it came towards me.

A smell of burning flesh assaulted my nose. I ducked quickly, barely dodging the attack.

I narrowly avoided the attack, but it hit my hair, burning some of it in the process.

But, I didn't stop running. I had to keep moving, I couldn't afford to stop, not now. Not ever.

.

I had escaped the academy grounds, taking ragged breaths. I had reached the forest near the academy. But right then, a figure materialized from the shadows.

I bumped into the figure and fell to the floor. A little groan left my lips as I pushed myself back up.

Looking up I saw something that looked like a man, but he gave off a different, inhumane aura.

The atmosphere seemed to get darker as the man turned around, locking eyes with mine.

A chill ran down my spine as I gazed into the man's eyes, which seemed to be glowing in a red glint.

The mana pressure was intense, his presence overwhelming, threatening to crush me any second.

My heart hammered against my ribs as I stared at the vaguely familiar figure.

Memories soared into my mind, my thoughts went blank. Looking at the man in front of me, only one thing came to mind.

.

"'It's 'that man'"
