Chapter 31: Chapter 31: A Favor for Relics
"Well, I think we've talked enough about my situation. How about we head upstairs for a different conversation?"
Tony Stark suggested casually. He then added, "I was wondering if you could do me a favor and have a chat with Pepper. Just to clarify, I didn't tell her anything about what we discussed."
Tony gave Harvey a sly grin before continuing, "It's just that a bunch of rich women are quite interested in you, and Pepper wants to talk to you about it."
Harvey raised an eyebrow. "And you're okay with this?" he asked, eyeing Tony.
"Look, man, you're good-looking, sure, but you appear way younger than Pepper, and she doesn't exactly have the funds to keep a guy like you around," Tony replied, waving his hand dismissively. "As long as you don't hit on her, I'm fine with it."
Harvey shrugged. "If you're cool with it, I don't mind. Besides, flirting isn't really my style. Women usually approach me, not the other way around."
"Fair enough, let's go then." Tony nodded, feeling reassured.
But just as they were about to leave the underground lab, Jarvis chimed in, "Sir, Agent Coulson is calling. Should I patch him through?"
"Already?" Tony was surprised. He had asked Coulson to look into his father's belongings, and Tony had expected a typical delay—maybe even some maneuvering for goodwill points. The fact that Coulson was calling back so soon meant they had probably found something.
"Maybe they're better at their job than you think," Harvey remarked with a smirk.
"Let's take the call," Tony decided, pausing in his tracks.
This time, it wasn't just an audio call—it was a video conference. Standing next to Coulson was a man Tony hadn't seen before: a bald, African American man wearing an eyepatch and a long black coat.
"Tony Stark, it's a pleasure to finally meet you." The man introduced himself with authority. "I'm Nick Fury, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Coulson's superior. And Harvey Amberlock… I'd also like to extend an apology to you. One of our agents was a bit… overzealous in her approach last time. So, on her behalf, I'm sorry."
Tony frowned. "S.H.I.E.L.D.? Isn't your organization called something like the Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement Logistics Division?"
"Please, just call me Fury," he responded smoothly. "And yes, you weren't the only one to comment on our unnecessarily long name. Mr. Amberlock here also made that point. So we're in the process of rebranding. S.H.I.E.L.D. is the new name—simpler, easier, and hopefully, it inspires some confidence."
Tony shrugged. "Well, 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' is easier to remember, I'll give you that," he quipped, his tone cheeky as always.
Meanwhile, Harvey had already tuned out of the conversation, pulling out his phone and starting to play a game, clearly unbothered by Fury's presence.
Fury noticed but let it go, knowing that past encounters had soured Harvey's view of S.H.I.E.L.D. Regardless, Fury wasn't surprised to see Harvey here. After all, Harvey now owned a significant portion of Stark Industries and had become close friends with Tony. To the public, they were just two wealthy guys who got along, but Fury knew there was more to Harvey than met the eye.
"Let's move past the name for now and get to the reason for this call," Fury said, steering the conversation back on track. "We've located some of your father's old belongings. However, because of his significant role in the military, many of his items are classified as government property."
Tony rolled his eyes. "So basically, you're telling me it won't be easy to get my hands on them, right?"
Fury shook his head. "Not exactly. You're entitled to those items, but before we hand them over, I'd like to ask why, after all these years, you suddenly care about your father's old things."
Tony pulled open his shirt to reveal the arc reactor embedded in his chest. "This is why."
Fury studied the glowing device, intrigued but not overly surprised.
"This is the arc reactor," Tony explained. "It's an incredible piece of tech, and it's the key to me being Iron Man. But here's the problem—I can't take it out. It's keeping me alive, but it's also killing me."
Tony's expression darkened as he continued, "I've been trying to find an element that could replace the palladium that's poisoning me, but nothing on the periodic table works. So, I started thinking… maybe my old man left something behind that could help me solve this."
Fury nodded thoughtfully. "I understand. I'll have Coulson deliver what we've found. Hopefully, your father's work will provide the insight you need."
Fury knew that if Tony couldn't find a solution, S.H.I.E.L.D. had temporary measures that could slow down the palladium poisoning. But ultimately, the real fix would have to come from Tony himself. The world couldn't afford to lose him—not when his Iron Man suits were revolutionizing warfare. In many ways, Tony was as valuable as any superhuman asset they had.
"Make it quick," Tony replied, his face set in a determined expression. The light from his arc reactor flickered softly in the dimly lit lab.
