Chapter 147: The Dissonants Poison runs Deep
When the Branch Master's trustworthy friend told him that he had secretly captured one of these Aliens and watched it visibly transform in front of him, he was on the verge of believing something as nonsensical as this supposed 'alien invasion'.
But what really hammered the nail into the coffin was when the Branch Master tried contacting his friend an hour or so later. He wanted to discuss more on the subject, but the phone never… picked up.
It was left eerily ringing for hours.
His friend always picked up the phone. He always… picked it up…
Following a period of grief, the Branch Master was then greeted with the appearance of someone whom he once considered his most promising student. And even as he wanted to get out some hateful comments, the entire time he was talking with Firecracker, he was reminded of the final words he would likely ever hear from his good friend.
"They live among us."
"You can't trust anyone," the Branch Master murmured while leaning back in his chair. "If what he said is true, and it likely is, then I'm probably… already… dead. 'They' know I was the caller from the location of the phone…"
"My time… It's up, isn't it?"
For the next few hours, the Branch Master remained unmoving in his chair. The candles in the room neared the end of their lifespans, yet they radiated the warmest of glows.
The Branch Master's eyes, reflecting his lit-up city outside, no longer glowed the same as before. And just like the candles, their flames were… snuffed out.
Yet, both the snuffed candles and the snuffed man seemed oddly at… peace.
The wax from the hot candles melted and trickled off of the high places that held them, and from down the Branch Master's eye fell the clearest of tears. His eyes still deeply immersed in the City that he called home.
The very next morning, the kind-hearted Branch Master was found dead in his office.
There was no evidence of there having been a murder as there were no wounds on the body of the victim. It was assumed that the old Branch Master had simply died from natural causes.
It would indeed seem that way…
From a rooftop a couple of miles away, an eerie figure stood motionless.
The figure unnaturally blinked its double-layered eyes while watching a crying auburn-haired girl hold on to a black coffin. If Cassius were here to identify the girl, he would see that it was the valiant Corra, now crestfallen.
She held on as if her life depended on it. She held on like if she were to let go, she would suddenly lose him for good.
"F-Father…! W-Why…!?" she cried out repeatedly. Yet, the whole time, the unnaturally blinking figure did nothing but watch.
If anyone else were to see the appearance of this figure, they would immediately call out, 'Prime Minister!' and they would be correct. This figure was in fact the… Highest Executive of Japan—the Prime Minister!
FWIP!
A different unusual figure suddenly appeared beside the Prime Minister.
"Is it done?"
"It is done." Experience tales at My Virtual Library Empire
"Do any others know of this? We must rip out roots and all."
"No. None knows. This human seemed to understand that if he told anyone else, it would only mean more deaths. Smart one he was."
The second unnatural figure stared where the first figure was staring, and then after a few seconds, it spoke up again:
"The Japanese Government is the first government to fall, but the others are on their way. And if we wish to have the entire world influence the offspring of 'it,' then everything must go off without issue."
The whole world… being mind-controlled for the sake of a single person.
That was insane…
The Prime Minister blinked several times, then looked away from the gathering of people dressed in black. He matched the same non-intensity stare as the second unknown figure, and said, "I will handle everything on my side. Japan's top brass have already all been replaced. A number of the S-Rank humans have also been… taken out of commission. And all with a few effortless lures and traps. Humans… they are so feeble. Threaten them with their family or those close to them and they turn stupid. Stupid makes for easy prey. They were yummy as well."
"Let's hope 'it' will share some of those same human weaknesses. Only then can we ascend the Ascension Tower and take this Dimension as our own," said the Second Figure, its voice scratchy.
Suddenly remembering something, it said, "...And the replacements of the S-Rank Japanese Hunters?"
"No one will be able to tell the difference between the false and the real. If not for the careless greed of the peon, none of us would have been discovered," the Prime Minister answered with hatred oozing from its voice.
"But it is taken care of—the problem?"
The Prime Minister looked even more deeply into the second figure's dead eyes.
"The problem is taken care of."
Silence.
After a brief period of hush, the Second Figure began to disappear, yet left a string of harrowing words to linger in the air:
"The world will soon descend into chaos; be prepared to act when need be. Within weeks, Seraphina, or Selena as she is known here, will clean up Malakar's mess if he cannot succeed in the Mothership's objective. Earth will fall at that point, but… not until we lure 'it' out."
"Until then, do not mess up," he added, his tone bereft of sympathy. "If you do… you'll end up like the one who couldn't control his greed."
With that, the Second Figure vanished from the rooftop.
"...."
The Prime Minister didn't say a single word.
However, after a few seconds, he also vanished.
Nothing except for the sorrow in the air was left as evidence that either of the mysterious figures were ever there to begin with…

"The Branch Master has died…?" Cassius, unable to believe what he was seeing on the living room television, rushed over to where all the other girls were situated. After sitting down on the couch, his expression changed several times.
He refused to believe that the lively old man who had secretly assisted him in keeping his identity hidden over the last month suddenly dropped dead overnight! It was simply impossible!
