Infinite Evolution: My Idle Evolution System

Chapter 306: Making the Correct Choice

'Why does he seem so sad?' Cassius thought. 'I know that he's likely grieving over whoever those graves belong to, but there's something more to it… I don't know what this feeling is, but I know… I know that things aren't as simple as they—' That was when he noticed the names etched into the gravestones. '—as they appear…' He finished the phrase; however, his mind was anywhere but where it was when the phrase first formed.

"It's been a while, girls," the old man said as an adoring smile contrasted with his blue complexion. "I know I promised you all that I'd visit every few thousand years, but something came up. That's why I haven't returned in over 2 million years. You see, I think… I think I finally came to a decision. It's one that I know you recommended time and time again, and though it took so many eons for me to truly understand what you were telling me, I do now… I do now…"

For some reason, even though his smile widened, the sadness contained within his expression and voice grew worse. Unknowingly, crystal-clear tears started to trail down his wrinkled face. Looking at him again, he appeared even older than before, with his lifeforce seemingly in the constant process of being drained.

"You guys as well," the old man said as he flipped his sorrowful gaze between a few certain tombstones with male names on them. "You must hear my decision as well. Throughout this long life of mine, you were my friends, my mentors, my companions, my… family…" Briefly turning toward the tombstones with feminine names, he declared, "You all were my family. The only people I ever cared for. Naturally, every single one of you deserves to listen to what I have to say… Probably the last things I'll ever say."

The silence in the air became palpably suffocating, with time and space themselves even being oppressed. And then, with the heavy exhale of an ancient being who had been alive for far longer than any other in the Ascension Tower, profoundly complex words left his mouth:

"I've decided to…"

The old man's final words could not be heard by the sole spectator to this event. And with a bright flash of golden light, Cassius was suddenly kicked out of the Challenge Dimension. Right after this, a few System Notifications materialized in front of the still shell-shocked man.

*Ding~!*

[Congratulations! You have made the correct choice and completed Challenge #100,000!]

[Your Class Change Quest has come to an end, and as you have acquired the maximum amount of Class Points, you shall obtain a Class from the most premium lot!]

"But wait!" Cassius suddenly exclaimed, snapping out of his reverie. "What about the names on those graves!? How could they be there!?? And just who was that old man??? Why… Why did he feel so familiar… so very, very familiar…"

[Sorry, Dear Host, all of what you asked is classified information! Sorries! But the good thing for you is that you chose the correct choice! And as such, you've fulfilled every single one of the requirements necessary to spin the wheel for the absolute cream-of-the-crop Classes!]

Cassius's face further contorted in confusion and extreme shock. "What choice are you even talking about??" he asked, practically shouting. "I didn't even get the opportunity to make a choice!"

[Sure you did~, but the exact answer you want is—guess what?—classified information! Maybe become stronger if you wish to know the truth!]

"You…" Cassius, finding himself frustratingly out of breath, felt his face turn red and purple.

"Whatever…" he ultimately muttered, giving up any hope of ever reasoning with the System. "If you want me to become stronger to figure out why those names were there and who that old man was, then so be it. I'll do as you want."

With a cold snort, Cassius called for the spinning wheel of Classes. It appeared almost right away. On it were one hundred different names, each representing a Class. Some had the same Classes on them, whereas others were the only ones of their kind. Each was a different color as well, unless they were the same Class.

However, of course the Idle Evolution System was out to troll its favorite Host; therefore, it hid the names of all the Classes. All that Cassius could see were question marks. Yet, some options only had one question mark, while others had up to ten question marks.

"I don't even need to ask that bastard to know that the better Classes are hidden behind a larger number of question marks," Cassius said, still trying his best to set aside the impact those tombstones had on him. "Good thing is that I assume my perfect score in the Class Change Quest gave me a bigger quantity of tabs with more question marks. Still, they number far less than the ones with fewer question marks. Then there's the ten-question-mark tab; it only has one of it, meaning that it's both the rarest Class and the best Class."

*Ding!*

[Are you ready to spin the wheel of fortune, my Dear Host!? I promise you that it'll be one of the best decisions you ever make in this extremely, extremely pathetic life of yours!]

"No need to emphasize that point, you bastard," Cassius spat back, annoyed. "Just get on with it. Spin the wheel of Classes."

[As you wish, Master! This pitiable slave of yours will do whatever you want, whenever you want~! Such is the fate of I…]

"Stop being so wishy-washy and just spin the stupid wheel."

[Big sad (っ◞‸◟ c)]

BLING!

Just then, the platform Cassius was standing on lit up exactly like the 99,999 that preceded it. After which, all 100,000 of the most difficult platforms synced up, causing an even brighter and more eye-opening eruption of golden light to occur.

Following the eruption of splendiferous golden light, all 100,000 of the platforms transformed. They became blobs of gold and coalesced together. They then condensed until reaching the size of a small marble, yet took on the shape of an arrow and dot.
