Chapter 478 - Fear The Man Who Doesn't Have Anything Left To Lose
I continued doing my daily tasks as if nothing happened in the past few days. I never visited Caius because I trusted that he will be well taken cared of by the hospital staff. I have also given him the appropriate first aid so he will be fine. I only helped out in the alchemy laboratory as usual for a couple of hours and also at the dining hall earlier. The rest of my day was used to help in the construction of the military barracks.
Caius on the other hand, stayed quiet for the next three days. Well, he was in the hospital and wasn't given the go signal to be discharged until the fourth day from the time he was brought in.
He was calm and extremely quiet but I can see the nervousness of his aides. It was like they knew something bad will happen after this quiet period. It was like the calm before a storm. No, it was before a 100-meter high tsunami more likely.
I was expecting him to pester me again once he was out of the hospital but he didn't. I waited for a couple of days but heard nothing. I decided to check on what he was up to but besides sending out a few letters and helping out in fortifying the outer wall which was part of his daily tasks, he did nothing else.
Since there was silence from his end, I became complacent and ignored his existence as well. That was my greatest mistake. I should have checked a little bit more, at least what those letters are saying and where they were being sent to.
After 3 days of peace and quiet, I heard the news that the matriarch and patriarch of the Astrantia household are coming to visit the northern camp to check on how everything was going within the next few days. Well, that includes their eldest son, of course. Somehow, I felt nervous of this recent development.
When I realized that fact, I made the decision to leave for the forests on the day they were meant to arrive. I will only greet them as part of my envoy work then disappear from the camp. I can stay many days in the forest if they stay in the camp for more than a day anyways. I am not going to be ambushed by that guy's call for backup.
The next day after that news came, I received a letter from the royal palace which never happened before. I usually send my reports first and that is the only time they respond to confirm that they received the report, checking on me and also giving any additional instructions or reminders if there are any.
As I opened the letter, my eyes kept widening the more I read through it. That damned Caius sent letters to his family, the main military camp and his family that he suffered the effects of resonance!
I held my forehead as I read the rest of the letter. My in-laws were congratulating me on bagging an eligible and elusive bachelor of the empire. They said that they received a request of formal betrothal between me and him because he won't marry anybody but me. He even had the shamelessness to tell outright that I undressed him and seen everything that can be seen so it was a done deal.
With everything that he has said in his letters, it was as if I already took his purity and we have done everything that a man and woman can do together. He actually entrapped me like this! Since his attempt to get close to me did not work, he used official means and use the power of his family as well to make me marry him.
I stuffed the letter back to its envelope angrily and started writing a letter of response and explanation. I explained that I found him with a high fever and did all those things as a doctor. I admitted to undressing him to give him a cold bath to lower his temperature quickly together with making him drink antipyretic medicine and health potions. I also assured them that I did not take his purity and treated him as a patient. My role was a doctor and not his lover. After I bathed him, I immediately dressed him appropriately and tucked him to bed. I then told his aides to bring him to the military hospital afterwards for further care and did not approach him in any way afterwards.
I sent the letter to the royal palace through magic so that it would arrive the quickest time possible. I instructed my in-laws to also write back to the Astrantia family and clear up the misunderstanding. I did not deny the fact that he resonated with me but I told them that I have the freedom to accept it or not and if Caius thinks that I will agree just because he told everybody about it, then he is wrong.
Since he is trying to use official means to make me do his bidding, I guess I will just have to leave this camp earlier than I should. It has been exactly 12 days since I started my volunteer work at this military camp. I only need 126 hours of volunteer work to tag it as completed. Instead of doing only 6 hours per day, I have been doing 7-8 on a regular basis. I have long finished the number of patients that I needed to treat for my certification too.
As of the moment, I am only 20 work hours away from completing my academe requirement. All the time I spent moving from one town or village to another were already counted as part of my academe mission hours so I am so ready to leave anytime after I completed the last 20 hours. I am quite sure General Delphis and Colonel Armand know about this. Even General Astrantia might have heard of it too but I doubt that any of them even bothered to count my work hours.
The next day, I went to work and completed my tasks as usual. I planned to work another 8 hours today. Then on the next day, I plan to work in the forest again since it the time I predicted that Caius' parents will arrive in the camp. I will spend the last 12 hours there and will simply send over my harvests through the trading post before making my way back to Hoffen City.
