Interstellar Bounty Hunter

Chapter 24: Druin revenge

On the hot and now human inhabited planet, the Druin gunner had set up around the blood soaked land, nurturing the fungi on the ground.

In the middle of a pool of blood was a single pole poking out of the sand, while the red fungi meandered across the sands and around all sides of the dune. The Druin gunner sat cross-legged, the blood and sand matted onto his body as he waited for the completion of the weapon he so desperately needed.

"Once the trident is complete I will be able to start working on a communication hub and a ship" These machines would need more supplies than what the Druin gunner had acquired so far. He would need to attack human outposts to get such materials.

"When this trident is complete, I can take revenge on the Humans" seethed the Druin gunner.

The pool of blood had been sucked dry, as the last portion of the trident had been complete. A small wave was released as it was completed, shifting the sand around the trident.

"The blood of my brethren and I have made a weapon that will kill all the humans I come across" pledged the Druin gunner.

The sand around the trident was now covered in fungi and as he walked closer the fungi elevated the trident, as if recognizing his pledge and granting him a new weapon.

The trident felt right in his hand. Scenes of his loved ones dying flashed into his mind, playing over and over how he had failed his people.

Walking towards the old outpost, he was going to reclaim metal from the humans who had taken it.

The journey was long until finally, he saw the outpost slowly appearing over the horizon. He walked slowly until he was closer. Crouching, he slowly made his way even closer to the outpost. Reading the trident for combat, he knew he would not be able to take on the outpost by himself, but that would not stop him from killing humans that where coming and going.

He laid down a ways from the intact entrance and waited, his bloody, sand covered body blending into the sand around him.

Hours passed as the Druin gunner looked into the outpost, his eyes red and locked onto the gate waiting, for he knew soon he would act.

The gate finally opened as a human convoy left through the gate. Coming along the road he was waiting on, he kept himself still, even with his heart beating out of his chest he was sure he could hear it outside his chest. As the convoy passed by him he sprung out from his location and drew his trident, sending a shot into the side of the last Humvee as it passed him.

He moved, the cover of darkness hid his already well camouflaged body against the sand. He moved, waited, and attacked again, creating as much chaos as he could. The screams of the humans drowned the Druin Gunner, their sea of agony only breaking with the sound of metal shredding and fire spreading.

The humans could not adapt fast enough, as each attack he would release a large amount of light, rendering night vision googles all but useless they stammered around trying hopelessly to find cover from the fire.

He continued to hit the three Humvees in the convoy, leaving the front Humvee free from attacking fire.

He locked onto the back two and continued to fire until all the humans were dead. The wreckage in front of him was smoldering and tattered with the last Humvee on fire.

"My honor will be diminished by attacking like this, but honor is for after we kill all the humans. I will make it back up by completing my mission" he said to himself as he loaded up the front Humvee full of metal scraps, before taking off, away from where he had attacked. The sirens had been activated and the humans were now pouring out of the base like ants out of a hill.

He fled, making sure he was not followed. Ditching the car a while away from his base, he moved on foot with anything he could carry.

"I am not going to be able to build a ship with these burnt scraps of metal. I need some real metal or will have to settle for help"

He continued to move through the sand on foot. He was slow with all the metal in hand, his silhouette hidden against the black of the night.

When he had reached the fungi center, he put down the metal where the blood had been pooling. The fungi slowly moved over the metal and started to incorporate it where it could. The fungi would often outline the metal pieces it could not make use of. Thankfully his trident was complete, allowing him heat to cut the metal were it was necessary, even if it was a draining task.

He continued this for days, having little success after each attack but he continued until he had completed some basic necessities. He had abandoned making a ship and had pivoted his task to stealing and modifying a human ship.

His technology would need to be implanted into the human technology as he did not have the basics and would not be able to turn human technology into Druin.

'These hunks of metal are barely technology. They are so old and primitive, they work completely differently'

In the following days and weeks he continued to scope out the outpost. He now knew it like the back of his scales, but he did not know how humans moved. They rarely left the outpost, opting for dropping off supplies inside the outpost.

The only time they would land was to fairy troops on and off world, as their ships where bigger then the Druins they could not easily land inside the outpost, more often then not opting for landing on an airstrip not far away.

The Druin gunner had slowly started to move his technology underground in preparation of his upcoming plan. He would need to be hidden from the air.

...

The ground rumbled as a ship slowly descended, waking the Druin gunner from his slumber as the sand around him shifted. Still covered by the sand, he waited as close as possible to the airstrip.

The engines roared one final time, before touching down vertically onto the ground that had been covered in concrete,. Just outside the concrete bounds laying in wait was the Druin gunner. He was still laying on his stomach as he watched as the humans left the ship and boarded cars to move to the outpost. The ship remained idle, waiting to be fueled and for new soldiers to get on.

The humans connected tubes to the ship where it was located. He marked down, making mental notes of the important parts of the ship. As the tube disconnected and the other soldiers moved towards the ship, he began sprinting to the ship. Just as he was about halfway, the humans spotted him, opening fire. He ran harder, hoping to take minimal damage before he got to the ship. The humans then also began to run, trying to get to the ship before him. He held up his trident and blasted the front most group away, slowing down the whole force.

He still managed to get to the ship before them. As he was boarding, his shields gave out and a bullet hit him in the shoulder, knocking him over onto the ship.

He ran to the cockpit, slamming a small red shard into the control panel before returning to the opening of the ship. Hiding in the shadows, he waited. The humans walked towards the ship with measured steps, looking to see if the intruder had been killed already, their rifles shaking as they looked to one another for confidence. The eyes of the other men said it all. Even without words, they all thought the same, I don't want to be first.
