Invincible after death, but in Warhammer 40K

Chapter 10: Chapter 10: The Pinnacle of Stealth, the Simplest Approach

Zhang Ge, who was carrying out a reconnaissance mission, had already reached the edge of the outer wall of the mayor's mansion. To avoid making noise from his armor clinking, he had removed all his gear.

Theoretically, if he were discovered, it would almost certainly mean a dead end for him.

However, even though Zhang Ge had been exposed to the surveillance cameras several times while evading the guards—sometimes with no way to avoid it—the cameras seemed to act as if they hadn't seen him. Even when he deliberately paused for a few seconds, there was no reaction at all.

What's going on? Is the guy in the monitoring room slacking off?

Zhang Ge fumed inwardly.

But if he had been in the monitoring room at the same time, he would have realized that things weren't so simple.

On the large screen in the monitoring room, where the feeds from numerous cameras should have been displayed, every single one of them was pitch black.

This wasn't caused by the decapitation squad but rather because the mayor's mansion was the epicenter of the rebellion and the primary hub for demon summoning.

The influence of the Warp on the material universe was particularly intense here, causing subtle but frequent distortions in the otherwise stable laws of physics.

For individuals with Warp projections to stabilize their surroundings, such changes might not have much impact. But for certain devices, especially precision electronic instruments without special protection, even a single occurrence of such distortion could be catastrophic.

Military-grade components, which undergo blessings and sanctification during every stage of assembly, might still function normally.

But as for this mayor... it was clear he hadn't spent money on such measures.

As a result, the surveillance system had been damaged from the outset, and the monitoring room had long since been abandoned.

After carefully scouting the outer wall again, Zhang Ge concluded that without special skills or the coordinated efforts of an entire specialized team, reaching this point was already the limit.

The cultists weren't like video game enemies, deliberately leaving blind spots in their field of vision for Zhang Ge to exploit. On the contrary, whenever conditions allowed, they overlapped as many sentry points, traps, and defenses as possible.

This was the norm.

The cultists guarding the mansion appeared to be the mayor's private soldiers or perhaps defectors from the PDF or Astra Militarum.

Under such a tightly organized watch, even if Zhang Ge managed to take out one or two sentries to create a brief opening, it wouldn't make much of a difference.

Unless he could eliminate an entire section simultaneously, the remaining guards would quickly react.

That said, the tighter the security around the mayor's mansion, the more it aligned with Zhang Ge's expectations.

Having come this far, the squad couldn't just turn back, could they? When it came time for a frontal assault, with bullets flying everywhere, who would be afraid of dying?

Perfect plan.

With that thought, Zhang Ge retraced his original route, avoiding the outer patrols, and reported the situation to the commissar and the others waiting on the perimeter.

The commissar, however, showed no particular reaction upon hearing the report.

Perhaps he was too experienced to be fazed. He simply asked Zhang Ge to repeat the route he had taken to bypass the outer defenses. Then, leading the entire squad, he began approaching the outer wall of the mansion.

But even with the utmost caution, accidents still happened.

"Trai—"

The laser beam cut off the cultist's words and the rest of his life.

Zhang Ge thought to himself: infiltrating with an entire squad is a completely different challenge compared to going solo.

Especially with an Ogryn in tow, many of the hiding spots were simply unusable. It wasn't surprising that the squad's presence had been detected.

Sister Amilia, who was positioned closer, immediately darted forward and decapitated the remaining two cultists with a single swing of her blade. But the squad's exposure was now irreversible.

In such a sensitive location, "no information being relayed back" was no longer an option.

Information in itself is a kind of message.

Recalling the patrol patterns he had observed earlier, Zhang Ge spoke up:

"According to Terra's timekeeping, we have roughly five minutes left."

The Commissar didn't respond.

He merely glanced at the outer wall of the mansion, then, after a moment, turned to Priest Laide and said:

"We're close enough. Wake the psyker."

The latter lowered the psyker from his back, unfastened the restraints binding him, and retrieved a syringe, injecting its contents into the psyker's neck.

The potent solution took immediate effect, causing the psyker to convulse before slowly regaining consciousness moments later.

"Oh... I've never felt such clarity in my connection to the Warp.

Is this my destined place? How marvelous."

The psyker pushed himself up from the ground as he spoke, standing while surveying his surroundings.

His gaze quickly locked onto the massive structure ahead.

However, the Commissar had no intention of indulging in further ramblings. He pointed at the psyker and then turned to Big Mouth, issuing a command:

"Big Mouth, throw him. Aim for the wall ahead."

Compared to the ogryn, the psyker's frail and emaciated body resembled a bamboo stick. Gripping him around the waist, Big Mouth effortlessly hoisted him into the air. The psyker offered no resistance, as if he had anticipated this. His expression even grew more exhilarated.

"Glory, glory!

Through suffering, my soul returns to the heavens!"

Under the ogryn's immense strength, the psyker traced a graceful arc through the air, hurtling toward the mansion's outer wall.

Countless guards naturally witnessed this scene, but before they could intercept, the psyker seemed to suddenly lose all momentum, freezing in mid-air.

His robes billowed as if caught in an unseen wind, and brilliant blue lightning began to dance around him. Psykic energy radiated from his pale body, forming an otherworldly spectacle of milky-white orbs of light.

In an instant, dazzling and resplendent psykic lightning surged and erupted from his upraised hands. Though silent, the agonized screams of cultists reduced to ash by the blasts were deafening.

The unrestrained use of psykic power caused an overflow so intense that it shredded and annihilated the cultists' counterattacks. Bullets and lasers aimed at the psyker were devoured without exception by the radiant energy.

But this display came at a cost.

As the psyker laughed maniacally, his body withered rapidly, soon resembling little more than a dried husk.

The brilliant, fleeting burst of power extinguished his life force quickly.

At the same time, the Warp, drawn by this dazzling projection, began to spew forth daemons in a relentless torrent.

Yet this was the final part of the psyker's plan. As his body and soul were invaded by one, then multiple twisted entities, he ignited himself using his last psykic reserves. The daemons from the Warp became fuel for his final act.

With an unrestrained surge of psykic energy, a white sphere as radiant as a star appeared on the ground, expanding rapidly.

Accompanied by the anguished howls of daemons lured into the furnace, the sphere transformed into a storm of annihilation, indiscriminately engulfing and shredding everything within its range.

As the storm finally subsided, those who had retreated to a safe distance witnessed a circular breach hundreds of meters wide, centered on where the psyker had been.

Cracks in the ground radiated even further outward.

Through the most brutal means, the psyker had forcefully torn open the final breach for the decapitation squad's "infiltration."

"Don't let anyone's sacrifice go to waste.

Now it's our turn to pay them a visit."
