Invincible after death, but in Warhammer 40K

Chapter 33: Chapter 33: The Deep Pit Sacrifice

Zhang Ge noticed that around the War-Grade Titan, a group of gray dots was conducting a ritual. It seemed that the lights on these towers were not turned on every day, otherwise, the power consumption alone would be enough to give the Dawn Cult a headache.

After briefly memorizing the path to the bottom, Zhang Ge said to Amilia:

"Let's go."

Immediately, the two took to the air again. To avoid being spotted by the people on the other side of the pit, Amilia first threw her greatsword at a relatively slow speed. The smaller size of the sword compared to a human figure, combined with the distance from the other side, made it difficult to detect unless one was paying close attention, so the slower speed didn't matter.

However, the two of them were different. If their speed slowed down, anyone who wasn't blind would likely see them.

As the greatsword flew halfway through the air, Amilia hurled a piece of scrap she had broken off at another tower at an extremely fast speed. Then, with a sudden burst of force from her feet, two metallic sounds of impact rang out one after the other.

By the time the tip of the greatsword had barely pierced the ground, Amilia had already arrived, precisely placing her foot on the back end of the sword's hilt. At that moment, the force of the sword being retracted into her back and the kinetic energy of it hitting the ground canceled each other out. The originally heavy landing was dissipated, and the two landed with an almost imperceptible sound behind a house.

By the time the cult members near the tower that had made the noise turned their heads to look at the source of the sound, the two had already landed and hidden inside the house.

The crude metal padlock on the house, originally meant for theft prevention, didn't even last half a second. In front of Amilia, it was as fragile as a biscuit.

If nothing unexpected happened, by the time the two cleared the interior of the house and confirmed there were no other threats, the patrol team above, having noticed the unusual sounds, would have already begun searching the surrounding area for anomalies.

Although the two sounds could somewhat reduce the level of suspicion—after all, those towers didn't look particularly sturdy, and it was normal for them to make noises due to aging—the cult members weren't NPCs. Once they became suspicious, they wouldn't give up just because they didn't find anything after a while.

But this was exactly what Amilia wanted—two possibilities: First, someone had breached the outer perimeter and was trying to distract them by targeting the towers within the ruins, or attempting to attack the towers.

Second, someone had directly jumped over fifty meters from above, bypassing them to reach the top of the tower, and had already flown into the pit faster than they could turn around. The two sounds were the result of their footsteps and the collision with the tower.

For these suburbanites, the first possibility was obviously far more likely than the second. With insufficient manpower to handle both scenarios simultaneously, it was only natural that part of the patrol team would be dispatched to search and guard the exterior, while the rest would focus more on the outside.

The next part of the journey offered almost no cover. Although this method increased the risk of exposure for Dominica and the others, it also significantly reduced the chances of Zhang Ge and Amilia being discovered.

Dominica and the others had plenty of room to maneuver around the patrol team, but at the moment, they were inside the deep pit, with almost no way to hide. Being discovered would be equivalent to being attacked.

Of course, Zhang Ge was also aware of this, and there was no need for excessive explanation between the two of them.

While waiting for the patrol teams to move outward, Zhang Ge asked:

"Are you... a Living Saint now?"

"Of course not. A Living Saint is the pinnacle of human virtue and the manifestation of the Emperor's will."

Zhang Ge pondered for a moment before continuing:

"Could you explain it more clearly? If you find it offensive, never mind."

"In simple terms, without the corresponding will and capacity to bear it, even if one receives the Emperor's blessing akin to that of a Living Saint, the recipient would quickly become... well, a purified, holy, yet unconscious psychic construct."

When discussing such topics, despite being a blessed individual and a Battle Sister, Amilia did not exhibit the usual fervor or avoidance one might expect, at least not at this moment. Instead, she organized her thoughts and explained it to Zhang Ge.

It seems that not all stereotypes about Sisters are entirely true.

Zhang Ge thought to himself.

Shortly after, Amilia added:

I have now reached the stage where I am at the limit of my short-term carrying capacity.

This answer was not entirely unexpected. After all, if it were a living saint, Zhang Ge wouldn't even think about dying—he'd just give up and treat her like a Pokémon, tossing her out. Even if the number of cult members outside increased by two orders of magnitude, they would still be no match for a living saint.

After some time, Amilia, who seemed to have noticed that a portion of the cult members had left, said:

"About two-thirds have gone."

"Understood."

The two left the room and quickly passed through the Dawn Cult's residential and industrial zones by heading directly to the edge and then leaping down to the next level.

When they finally reached the deepest area without incident, the buildings here became more densely packed, allowing the two to use the structures to conceal themselves and avoid the attention of the patrols above.

They were now not far from the cult's ritual site. The beams of light shining down from above grew increasingly blinding, and they could hear the local dialect being chanted below.

After ascending several more layers of stairs, they arrived near the deepest part. Here, they could see the crowned pope standing beside the altar. On the altar, nine pairs of nine-year-old boys and girls were arranged in rows.

The naked bodies of these boys and girls were covered with various phrases: "The Wisest One," "The Purest Jade," "We Seek Your Gaze," "God, oh God..."

...

Ahead of them was a blood pool encircling the Titan, filled with blood and floating corpses. These were clearly bodies accumulated over multiple sacrificial rituals, yet they showed no signs of decay, and no scent of blood emanated from the pool.

After finishing his incantation, the pontiff approached the first pair of a young boy and girl. From beneath his robe, he drew a ceremonial dagger and slit open their abdomens.

The two sacrificial victims, disemboweled, still stood motionless. Their intestines and other internal organs spilled out along with the blood, which flowed in large quantities through a blood channel into the pool.

When the last drop of blood had drained, their bodies had turned pale, no longer resembling humans, and they too tumbled into the blood pool, becoming one of the many corpses.

Next came the second pair, then the third...
