Invincible after death, but in Warhammer 40K

Chapter 91: Chapter 91: Changing Fortunes, Now It's My Turn

After the explosions ceased, the backflow of air brought in another wave of oxygen, eliminating the need for any post-battle mutilation.

Once the Elysian Drop Troops took over the defensive lines, the mission for the Guardsmen was finally complete. After collecting the corpses and conducting a brief cleanup, the battle-weary Guardsmen were loaded onto a Valkyrie and transported to the rear.

It wasn't that they didn't want to stay; objectively, if they were not to be treated as expendable assets, such rotations were necessary.

They hadn't undergone the same rigorous screening and training as the Astartes, and most were experiencing this scale of Chaos incursion for the first time. Even if they didn't realize it, the taint of the Warp had surely begun to cling to them, whether they liked it or not.

This corruption could still be purged at this superficial stage, but if it were allowed to deepen, the cost of thorough eradication would be too high, likely exceeding their very lives, thus making a bullet to the head a more viable option.

Despite the fact that the forces remaining at the clock tower were now even fewer than the original contingent of Guardsmen, with artillery support and five Valkyries available as fire support, the Chaos Remnants' several assaults had failed to budge the defensive line even an inch.

After leaving behind several hundred corpses in vain, the enemy commander was finally forced to concede that with the available forces, the clock tower was beyond their reach.

With this withdrawal, there would be no second chance to return.

The second wave of reinforcements was somewhat unexpected—it was the Adeptus Mechanicus Vanguard, who had forcefully breached the air defense net aboard their Thunderhawks.

Twelve crimson aircraft, each bearing wounds but remarkably precise in formation changes and benefiting from their excellent capabilities, suffered no losses; the damage to each craft was relatively even, staying above a safe threshold.

When these somewhat unfamiliar fighters arrived, the Valkyries were thrown into a brief panic. After all, the friend-or-foe recognition had not been established, and Chaos had already infiltrated before it could be resolved. From a distance, the bright red machines, against the backdrop of the pink twilight, appeared to be painted in the same chaotic colors as those of the enemy.

Fortunately, the Adeptus Mechanicus squad reacted quickly, projecting binary codes via holography. Once relayed to the Valkyrie's pilots, the misunderstanding was cleared up.

But why had the Adeptus Mechanicus come? They seemed more urgent than the noble girl who had been coerced. After all, Thunderhawks were much more valuable than Valkyries; to send twelve was no small matter, and it suggested that a significant number of Thunderhawks from the entire system were likely here.

Including Zhang Ge, everyone was somewhat at a loss regarding this unexpected assistance.

While they were mentally perplexed, the Adeptus Mechanicus team, upon noticing through the First Mechanized Company's troop movements that Zhang Ge had gone deep into enemy territory, were almost left literally scratching their heads.

Zhang Ge's survival didn't matter to them; what mattered was what would happen if his death meant that they could not summon the Titan!

That was not just any Warlord Titan; it was a Titan capable of running and wielding a sword, its value far exceeding that of an entire stronghold. If such a vital asset fell in this remote area, even the greatest sage would likely faint from rage.

Thus, the Adeptus Mechanicus troops at the tower's summit did their utmost to assemble a fleet, cramming their Vanguard forces, originally intended to protect the bishops, into the squadron. Under the leadership of a Vanguard Alpha, they charged through several defensive zones to reach this location.

The heavily modified members of the Vanguard landed directly on the tower's summit, still engulfed in flames. Dressed in layers of protective radiation shielding, they swiftly crossed the burning area and soon stood before Zhang Ge.

These individuals in heavy armor possessed remarkable combat capabilities, typically seen only in the most crucial areas for the Adeptus Mechanicus. Even Storm Troopers were somewhat inferior in comparison.

Now, over sixty of them had arrived, armed with Arc Weapons and Plasma Weapons, accompanied by several Heavy Servitors.

Confirming Zhang Ge's safety, the Vanguard Alpha, whose waist bore a power sword, spoke:

"Protocol: Cooperative Operation. Command: Zhang Ge."

In that instant, several refusal scenarios flashed through Zhang Ge's mind.

For example, he could cite radiation concerns. But upon closer inspection, they had already taken precautions against radiation; their weapons had been chosen to avoid any risk of radiation leakage.

With such sincerity on the table, what excuse could he possibly find?

After a moment of silence, he could only slightly clench his fist and respond:

"Sure."

No sooner had he finished speaking than the sixty-plus Vanguard troops quickly dispersed to optimal firing positions, even pushing aside a number of Elysian Drop Troops. While the latter may have grumbled, there was no debate about it.

After all, the combat effectiveness of this group was well-known and proven in internal conflicts, and yielding their positions would certainly allow for greater firepower.

In the ensuing battle, the Vanguard troops indeed demonstrated that their presence was not unwarranted; just sixty men effectively suppressed several waves of small-scale counterattacks organized by the remnants of Chaos, without even needing support from the overhead aircraft.

Their Arc Weapons accurately penetrated the bodies of enemy officers, scattering the formations and connections among the cultists, ultimately allowing the rapid-fire weapons on the Heavy Servitors to collect the remains of the enemies.

This highly efficient combat method resembled solving a mathematical problem with the optimal solution—no heart-stopping tactical gambits, everything flowed as if it were meant to be.

In the following span of time, Night Raid Unit 6904936135 and other reinforcements from various fronts began to arrive, whether Astartes or PDF. Before the ground troops even reached the site, the forces gathering at the tower had already surpassed three hundred.

With the aerial fighters in coordination, this many troops were more than sufficient to establish a defensive line in the surrounding outer districts.

Upon realizing that they would be unable to retake the area in the short term, the forces of Chaos were compelled to abandon their continued counterattacks. Instead, they began to hurriedly withdraw troops from various lines and areas of traitor militia, striving to strengthen their defenses before Zhang Ge's forces fully assembled.

Time flowed swiftly, and the artillery duels replaced the intense ground conflicts as the main theme during this period, until the sound of tank treads echoed at the end of the streets.

The noble girl's troops, leading with Leman Russ Tanks, had arrived as part of the PDF armored forces. Trailing behind them were transport vehicles and trucks, as large numbers of soldiers began to flow through the tower, following the refined plans laid out by Zhang Ge and others during their wait for reinforcements, filling into the designated deployment positions.

Initially, Zhang Ge had estimated the numbers to be around ten thousand, which put his mind somewhat at ease.

But upon seeing the main force appear in the distance, the relief in his heart suddenly flipped back to anxiety.

He realized something.

The number of battle sisters called here exceeded several thousand, but most were dispersed among various units as infantry. The vehicles left behind by the frontline field chapels were numerous, yet still not close to the scale needed to accommodate thousands of battle sisters.

The state church was hardly stingy with its armed forces; they were even willing to use STC technology from the traitorous era to exchange for heavy equipment with the Adeptus Mechanicus, which they would then allocate for the use of the battle sisters.

So where had the remaining vehicles gone?

Indeed, they remained at the grand cathedral's headquarters, and when Amelia, who had the authority to requisition those assets, returned to the cathedral, what would occur was left unsaid.

In the distance, piloted by the soldiers of the First Mechanized Company, large units of war machines filled with vengeful intent began to emerge amidst the tremors of the ground.
