Chapter 11: Chapter 11: A Narrow Escape!
Countless Korean soldiers surged out of the city, charging ferociously toward the Qin army's logistics camp outside the city.
Arrows rained down indiscriminately, drawing closer step by step.
As the Korean forces approached the camp, they saw the Qin soldiers stumbling out of their tents in confusion.
"Kill them all! Leave no one alive!"
"Kill!!"
The Korean soldiers roared and wielded their weapons, hacking down the unprepared Qin logistics troops mercilessly.
The area outside Yangcheng turned into a scene of carnage.
Caught off guard, the logistics troops, who were not frontline soldiers, were utterly unprepared for this ambush. Many were slaughtered before they could fully wake up, cut down in their tents by the advancing Korean forces.
The massacre created utter chaos.
"Are the Koreans attacking us?"
"How is this possible?"
"Where did they come from?"
Wei Quan looked at Zhao Feng in shock, as did the other soldiers around him. They were all terrified and at a loss.
If the Korean forces had attacked from outside, it might have been understandable they could have been remnants of defeated troops. But for them to surge out of Yangcheng, a fortified city already captured by Qin, was beyond comprehension and caught everyone completely off guard.
"It's clear," Zhao Feng said calmly, "this Korean force must have been hiding in the city before it fell. They waited for the Qin army's main forces to advance further before launching this ambush."
"But how could they hide in Yangcheng? With ten thousand troops attacking, where could they possibly conceal themselves? They couldn't all hide in the houses, could they?" Wei Quan asked, still bewildered.
"They can't hide in houses? What about underground?" Zhao Feng retorted.
Hearing this, Wei Quan's face turned pale. "What do we do now?"
"The enemy has launched a sudden attack. Our commanders likely haven't even reacted yet. And we're just logistics troops what else can we do?" Zhao Feng said decisively. "We retreat. Once the higher-ups understand what's going on, they'll handle it."
Without hesitation, Wei Quan shouted, "Retreat! Fall back!" He quickly rallied the soldiers under his command to retreat.
A hundred panicked men began retreating in disarray.
They couldn't worry about anyone else.
In battles involving thousands or tens of thousands, a small group of a hundred men was insignificant. Zhao Feng knew he could fight and take down many enemies, but the army's morale was already shattered. Without regrouping, rushing into battle would be suicide. Zhao Feng wasn't foolish enough to throw his life away.
Inside Yangcheng
"What's the situation?"
Riding her horse and wielding a spear, Wang Yan asked urgently.
"Reporting to the commander! The Korean forces have broken out of the main gate and are charging toward the logistics camp outside the city!" one of her officers replied hastily.
Hearing this, Wang Yan's face darkened.
"Damn it!"
"They're not trying to retake the city. They're feigning an attempt to trick us into focusing our forces here. While we concentrate on defending, they've broken out to cut off our supply lines and attack our provisions," Wang Yan said grimly.
"What should we do now, Commander?"
The officers looked at Wang Yan, anxious and unsure.
This was no small matter.
If their supply lines were severed and provisions destroyed, it would significantly impact Qin's campaign to conquer Korea, creating numerous complications.
"Rally the troops immediately and pursue them! We cannot let the enemy succeed!" Wang Yan commanded without hesitation.
"Yes, ma'am!"
As the sun rose and daylight broke, the Korean forces' surprise attack on Yangcheng had left Wang Yan's garrison at a severe disadvantage. The logistics camp outside the city lay in ruins, littered with corpses. The carnage within Yangcheng had subsided for the moment.
Ten miles from Yangcheng, the remnants of the logistics troops scattered in disarray. Of the original ten thousand, at least half had perished in the night's ambush.
"Finally, we can catch our breath," Zhao Feng said, scanning the survivors.
"Brother Wei, are you alright?"
Wei Quan, slumped on the ground, managed a weak smile. "I'm… I'm fine."
"Good. At least we survived," Zhao Feng replied with a relieved smile.
Among the soldiers, Wei Quan was the person Zhao Feng was closest to.
"So many died this time…" Wei Quan muttered, glancing at the exhausted survivors around him. "Who would've thought the Koreans were hiding in the city all along?"
"Maybe it was an oversight by our superiors," Zhao Feng replied lightly, his tone calm.
Suddenly
Swish! Swish! Swish!
The air filled with the sound of arrows whistling toward them.
"Ahhh!"
"The enemy is catching up!"
"Run!!"
Panic spread through the weary soldiers as another wave of arrows rained down, shattering their brief respite.
"Zhao, watch out!"
Wei Quan's eyes widened as he saw several arrows flying toward Zhao Feng. Without hesitation, he lunged forward, putting himself between Zhao Feng and the arrows.
Caught off guard, Zhao Feng acted swiftly.
With his heightened senses and speed, Zhao Feng grabbed Wei Quan and pulled him aside just in time.
The arrows struck the ground harmlessly where they had stood.
"Brother Wei, what were you thinking?" Zhao Feng shouted, anger and gratitude mixing in his voice.
Wearing armor and an inner vest beneath it, Zhao Feng was confident the arrows wouldn't have harmed him. He hadn't expected Wei Quan to risk his life so recklessly.
"You saved my life again, kid," Wei Quan said with a relieved laugh. "I knew there was something special about you. Dodging arrows that fast? Incredible."
"Do you realize you almost got yourself killed?" Zhao Feng scolded, torn between exasperation and appreciation.
"Alright, alright," Wei Quan said with a weak chuckle. "I'm your superior, remember? Show some respect. But let's focus on surviving first."
Zhao Feng glanced at the pursuing Korean forces, his eyes darkening with resolve.
"At this point, do you think we can escape? Those bastards aren't letting us go."
