Chapter 199: CA [199] Servant
"So, with Merlin and Morgan's help, I founded the Knights of the Round Table, defeated our enemies, and built Britain. After a few years, I saw that Mordred had enough experience, and she kept insisting she wanted to be king. So, I passed the throne to her and retired to Avalon with Merlin and Morgan."
"A parallel world's King Arthur, huh? That's completely different from what I know." Kairi Sisigou said, glancing at Mordred's puzzled expression.
"Compared to that, Mordred's story aligns more with the Arthurian legend I'm familiar with."
"Tch, that world's Mordred must've hit the jackpot!" Mordred snapped, clearly irked by Kairi's implication that she was the rebellious knight.
The tension between them eased as Kairi stepped in to explain, defusing Mordred's earlier hostility.
Parallel worlds!
One of the Nasuverse's defining traits, countless parallel worlds, each with its own Earth, each following a unique worldline. In this world, King Arthur was a woman, but in another, he could be a man, an old geezer, or even a matron. Anything was possible.
Each worldline birthed distinct heroic figures, so summoned Heroes could differ vastly from known history. As a magus, Kairi was well aware of this. The Second Magic, tied to parallel worlds, was studied by figures like Zelretch, so most magi understood the concept. With his explanation, Altair's identity clicked into place: a King Arthur from a parallel world, Mordred's father.
To Kairi, Mordred was likely from his own world, while Altair was a parallel-world King Arthur.
Though Mordred held a grudge against her world's Arthur, she wasn't about to draw her sword on a parallel version, so the two began to warm up, sharing details about their respective worlds.
This led to the current scene. After Mordred shared her story, Altair spun an elaborate tale of a wholesome, fatherly King Arthur who doted on his daughter.
"So, you didn't marry Guinevere or face a rebellion in your kingdom?" Kairi asked, familiar with his world's Arthurian legend but intrigued by Altair's version, a completely different take.
Mordred, curious, leaned in to listen.
"Right. When I pulled the sword from the stone, its power turned me into an ageless being. As someone who doesn't age, marrying a mortal would've been irresponsible." Altair said, weaving his story with conviction.
"As for Mordred, in my world, she was created by Morgan using my bloodline, just like in this world. But Morgan told me about it, so I knew. And without a wife, having an adorable daughter like Mordred? That's pretty great, isn't it?"
"Wait, you said adorable?" Mordred gaped at Altair. From his earlier tale, she knew his world's Mordred looked identical to her, but this was the first time anyone had called her adorable!
"Absolutely, very adorable." Altair said, clapping Kairi's shoulder and gesturing toward Mordred with a thumb. "Don't you think she's adorable?"
His proud-dad act left Kairi speechless, but under the weight of Altair's hand, he nodded.
"Yeah, pretty adorable."
This King Arthur was a total daughter-doting dad? Even for a Mordred from another world?
Kairi found Altair's behavior baffling.
Mordred, stunned, glanced between Kairi and Altair. As a tough-as-nails knight, she should be furious and draw her sword, but being called adorable by a King Arthur, even a weird one, made it hard to stay mad. It was, after all, a kind of recognition from a King Arthur, strange as it was.
Mordred didn't argue, and Altair pressed on with his daughter-praising antics.
"Exactly! Mordred's adorable and full of energy. Having such a daughter doesn't just make me happy, it shut up that nagging Kay, who kept insisting I needed an Quester an heir as king. My ears got some peace."
"Ugh, Kay's such a pain." Mordred nodded, agreeing. Among the Knight of the Round Tables, Kay was a stubborn stickler, infuriating.
Seeing Mordred agree, Altair grinned eagerly at her, and Mordred's lips twitched upward in response.
Finally, they'd found common ground.
"Alright, since we've cleared things up, let's confirm everything." Kairi said, relieved that the two were getting along and the situation was clarified.
"I'm the Red Faction Master for this Holy Grail War, and you two are my summoned Servants, both Sabers, correct?"
"Correct. I'm Saber." Mordred nodded firmly.
"Yup, I'm Saber too." Altair added.
Mordred didn't object to Altair's claim this time. If a King Arthur wasn't worthy of being Saber, who was?
"Somehow, I summoned two Servants, the legendary King Arthur and his heir, Mordred." Kairi said, his mood lifting, his words flattering Mordred enough to make her ponytail practically perk up.
"But, Master, my situation's a bit unique. I was summoned in my physical body, so my contract with you is different from Mordred's, and I can't dematerialize." Altair explained, adding to his cover story.
"No problem, that doesn't matter." Kairi said, feeling like he'd hit the jackpot.
"Since you can't dematerialize, Arthur, you'll stay by my side as the visible Saber. Mordred, you'll dematerialize and follow behind, so everyone thinks I've only got one Saber."
"A tactical move? No problem!" Altair agreed, turning to Mordred. "Mordred, you okay with staying hidden for a bit until the fighting starts?"
"Totally fine!" Mordred nodded eagerly, unable to refuse Altair's friendly tone.
"With the strategy set, let's move on to the first step!" Kairi declared.
"Oh? Got a plan, Arthur?" Kairi asked, curious. This was the legendary King Arthur, a master strategist, surely he had something clever in mind.
Altair's face turned serious, and Mordred mirrored his expression.
"Obviously, we eat first. Summoned to this era, the first thing to do is taste its cuisine!"
Kairi and Mordred froze, stunned. They'd expected some grand strategy, not… dinner plans!
"Uh…" Kairi stammered, dumbfounded. Was this really King Arthur? Was he that into food?
Ignoring Kairi's baffled look, Altair turned to Mordred.
"Mordred, I'm right, aren't I? Before a battle, you've got to be in top shape. Hunger's the real enemy!"
Mordred instantly recalled her father chomping on potatoes before every battle, nodding enthusiastically. "Yeah, totally!"
