Chapter 202: CA [202] Infiltration
Truth be told, from Altair's perspective, Mordred might be a knight, but she'd fit better as a Berserker, a rational one, sure, but a Berserker nonetheless. Her fighting style was just too wild.
Despite her knightly training, her approach boiled down to one word: reckless.
The enemies surrounding them weren't Black Faction Servants. The Holy Grail War had just begun, and both sides were probing, wary of revealing their Servants' true names. Without knowing an opponent's identity, a careless move could lead to a Noble Phantasm ambush, game over.
So, the Black Faction sent golems and homunculi as scouts, using familiars to spy from a distance, gathering intel at minimal cost.
But Altair saw through it. He unleashed a burst of curse power, a trick he'd picked up in the Campione world. Curse power trumped magecraft, disrupting magical connections like an EMP frying modern tech. With the familiars' links severed, he left the golems to Mordred, who was itching to fight and eager to show off.
And show off she did. The moment Altair gave her the green light, Mordred charged in, fully armored, tearing through the golems with unrestrained ferocity. A knight she might be, but her style was anything but refined, she punched, kneed, kicked, even headbutted. She finished by hurling Clarent like a projectile, using every part of her body like a living weapon. A true Berserker in all but name.
After mowing down the golems, Mordred slung Clarent over her shoulder and jogged to Altair, beaming with a look that screamed for praise.
"Father, how was my fighting?"
"Fantastic! Same style as me, absolutely stellar!" Altair grinned.
"You fight like that too, Father?" Mordred asked, eyes wide.
"Yup. Wait till we hit the battlefield together. We'll crush them as a father-daughter team!"
"Oh, that's gonna be awesome! I can't wait to fight side by side with you!" Mordred's excitement surged, thrilled by Altair's approval and the prospect of battling together.
"Hey, you two! Done with the golems? Mind helping me with these homunculi?" Kairi called from nearby, dodging attacks from the Black Faction's cannon-fodder creations.
"Whoops, sorry, Master! On it!" Mordred shouted, sprinting forward. The homunculi, with their average physiques, were no match for a Servant. Mordred barreled through like a lawnmower, her sword's swing unleashing a shockwave that sent them flying into walls, dead on impact.
"Wow, that strength is reassuring." Kairi said, chuckling at the ease of her victory.
"Hmph, obviously! I'm Father's only heir." Mordred boasted, brandishing Clarent proudly.
"Let's move. This was just a probe, no more attacks tonight." Kairi said.
"What? That's it? I was hoping for a Black Faction Servant to spar with." Mordred grumbled.
"Patience, Mordred. It's only day one. There's plenty of time." Altair said, amused, calming her down.
He glanced at the brightly lit castle on a distant hill. "They didn't get any useful intel from this. They'll keep probing, and you'll have plenty of chances to fight."
By now, the Red Faction's Berserker, Spartacus, the Smiling Rebel, had likely reached the forest outside Tulifas. He'd soon be captured by the Black Faction, turned into a tool, and used as cannon fodder.
"But first, I need to gather some intel myself." Altair said. A Saber sneaking into enemy territory to scout? Perfectly reasonable.
"Master, with my skills, I can infiltrate without even their Caster noticing. I'll head to the Black Faction's base and check their Servants." Altair proposed, eyeing the Millennia Fortress.
"You sure you'll be fine alone, Arthur?" Kairi asked.
"No problem. Sneaking in for intel is way easier than assassination." Altair replied.
Kairi sighed. A Saber this good at Assassin work? After Altair's church stunt, though, it seemed plausible.
"Alright, Arthur, go for it. I'll take Mordred and wait outside the city. Stay safe." Kairi said.
"Father, don't need me along?" Mordred asked.
"Nah, you're not built for stealth." Altair said.
"Ugh, fine." Mordred conceded, knowing assassination wasn't her forte.
"Both of you, stay safe." Altair said, leaping onto a nearby rooftop and darting toward the fortress, vanishing from view.
"Let's head outside the city. This is their stronghold, who knows where their familiars are watching." Kairi said, prompting Mordred to dematerialize and follow as they left.
Meanwhile, ten seconds after departing, Altair lowered his presence, entering stealth mode. He strode openly toward the Millennia Fortress, unchallenged. Homunculi and golems on patrol ignored him, and even the fortress's magical barriers failed to detect him.
The castle was massive, so Altair searched strategically, reasoning that the highest-ranking figures would be at the top. Climbing higher, he reached a grand hall and spotted a figure with a commanding presence, Vlad III, the Black Faction's Lancer, his face marked with dramatic makeup.
