Chapter 87 - Don't Hold Back
“I’m going to break through the tower. Provide bombardment support.”
“I’m casting right now! Please wait for just 30 seconds.”
“Don’t worry. The timing will align as I break through.”
There was no thought of protesting against this unreasonable order. That crazy woman, who had always said that persuasion was for the powerless, had indeed been achieving results that spoke louder than any complicated explanation.
Lee Yena’s vision, shared through the activated hawk’s eye, was filled with a Holy Knight equipped with a massive shield.
The Holy Knight moved slowly and had low attack strength, but his build was specialized in blocking paths. Despite criticisms about becoming a dishonorable meat shield due to lacking physical prowess, no one could deny his efficiency.
The giant wall formed by the shield was like a mobile fortress, blocking even half of the knight’s own right-side view.
The best strategy was to bombard the wall with magic attacks that couldn’t be blocked by a shield, and then cut through it. The alternative was to exploit gaps in his defense with a coordinated attack.
However, it seemed clear that this was not their intention.
The shared vision lightly shook up and down. The rogue, claiming control over the space with relaxed steps, repeatedly moved in and out of the attack range.
The knight, who hid behind his shield every time in anticipation of a coordinated attack, began to grasp the rogue’s rhythm and prepare for a counterattack.
-Thud.
A quickly launched dagger struck the shield with a dull sound. The forced attack, despite the lack of an opening, seemed to waste stamina visibly.
Nonetheless, the rogue stepped forward again. Then, with a dizzying spin, the rogue launched a powerful attack aimed at the knight’s lower body.
It was an absurd choice. A large shield needs only a slight move downward from the neutral position to block lower-body attacks entirely.
“Unless the shield is anticipated to be lifted- Ah.”
-Thud!
The powerful attack hit the shield and was for naught, resonating with a heavy sound.
“Revan?”
Lee Yena, who had taken significant damage in the exchange, called out to Revan in confusion—he understood the situation a moment too late.
Had he shot an arrow, the knight would have instinctively lifted the shield to block it.
At that moment, if a lower-body attack were executed with all his might, even if it failed, the knight’s defensive posture would have collapsed. The follow-up attack from the archer could then finish him off.
If it had succeeded, it would have been a textbook example of an excellent combo move.
In terms of creating timing and breaking through the front lines, if there were an archery player’s highlight, it would surely include a typical ‘Archer Carry’ scene.
However, while fighting on the front lines, it is difficult to predict when and where an archer would provide support. KoK was not a game that showed allied vision too considerately.
‘I wondered what made them assume that.’
But if an archer were certain that someone was observing their skirmish, it would be a different story.
When an archer receives shared vision like a hawk’s eye, a translucent hawk, roughly the size of a fist, would appear above the character sharing the vision.
So,
‘When the vision shook upward, seeing the hawk, the combat was predicated on support fire.’
This meant that, seeing the hawk appear in that instant, the archer led the shield’s movements with perfect timing to create an opportunity to expose a gap.
However-
Unless it was a pro match, no one would identify the hawk and devise such a plan mid-battle. If they were a pro, they would have communicated directly via voice chat from the start.
Therefore, it was no wonder that Revan didn’t notice Lee Yena’s intention at first. The fact that he inferred it later still deserved praise for his game sense.
“I’ll watch GetDevoured.”
As soon as he heard the voice, the rogue took a step back, as if to regroup, and threw a light check. Even the knight, who remained vigilant until the end, had to advance with his shield at this point.
As the hawk’s eye deactivated, the archer drew their bowstring once, activated Rapid Fire, and shot the second arrow in quick succession. The first arrow, drawing an Arc, struck the shield—but Lee Yena did not miss the gap created by it. The second arrow naturally pierced the knight’s body.
Though it was a beat late, it was a perfect combination.
『Wow』
『Crazy LOLOLOL LOLOLOL』
『That was awesome』
『Seriously, the archer is good』
『Haven’t seen an archer carry in a while』
『Did they always play archer?』
《Good cover.》
With a voice nonchalantly giving him credit, the rogue’s icon on the minimap finally entered the enemy-occupied tower.
And about 15 seconds later. The kill log announcing the elimination of the enemy archer appeared as if it were an inevitable event. From the time Lee Yena first requested support, only 30 seconds had elapsed.
The mage’s belated bombardment hit the enemy warrior, who was hurrying to provide backup.
‘So, the timing they’re talking about when attacking must be this.’
It seemed that breaking through the Holy Knight, infiltrating the tower, and slicing through the backline didn’t require any bombardment support, after all.
Now, regardless of any nonsense spoken, it seemed clear that the orders correctly read the battlefield situation. This was true even if it went against Revan’s common sense.
“I’ll break bot,” he said softly with a chuckle.
When the discussion arose about who would play the archer, he thought it was because everyone wanted to be the archer. He assumed they would take turns choosing the archer or have an archer mirror match to determine who was the better player.
At least, that was what Revan thought. While he quietly seethed and hosted the session, imagining the scene where he, as a warrior, would ax DevourItAll’s head once and turn the enemy archer and rogue into a pincushion.
Arc’s adamant opposition led to the one-on-one duel being canceled.
Even when they agreed to keep playing with a three-man queue and taking turns to be the archer, experimenting to see which combination worked best, Revan firmly believed Lee Yena shared the same sentiment.
But watching Lee Yena go wild when he took his turn as the archer—and seeing him create perfect opportunities for superior archer plays—it was impossible not to notice the shift in strategy.
Clearly, it must have been him who suggested the loser play the archer.
‘He couldn’t have considered how much archer players would fuss about this…’
Seeing their beloved character treated like a punishment, the archer players surely wouldn’t stay silent. Archer forums across various communities would be in an uproar. Influential broadcasters would probably criticize them for this.
A new entry titled “Class Disparagement” would inevitably get added to the wiki’s “Controversies” section.
‘Well, considering they didn’t care enough to avoid the obvious bait targeting the warrior class, competing for top user numbers, it makes sense.’
He had a lot of time for such random thoughts. There was no harassment from the enemy archer or mage, nor any infiltrating warrior sneaking up behind.
It was all thanks to one rogue who began stirring up the rear lines quite literally. Comfortably and with leisure, he scanned the enemy lines. The enemy archer, who was hurrying to reposition, looked rather vulnerable and inviting.
“The archer is coming. I’ll block them from settling.”
He placed an arrow on the bowstring and activated his snipe.
-Thunk!
『Lupin(Archer) has been eliminated!』
『Revanovsky(Archer) → Lupin(Archer)』
Though Archer wasn’t his main character, he wouldn’t miss an archer running around without even trying to hide. Thanks to Lee Yena, who had virtually taken control of the underground, he didn’t have to worry about his back.
‘If I can settle down this comfortably and just focus on free damage… even a Bronze-tier player could make some nice plays with an archer.’
He thought he should tell her to communicate when she wanted cover, but another laugh slipped out. That crazy woman was tough to deal with as an opponent.
Watching her rampage on the opposite team, his heart felt reassured to an extent.
* * * *
=Victory!=
The second experiment wrapped up pretty successfully.
Revan… it seemed the archer class suited him quite well. His ability to grasp the flow of the battlefield was impressive.
‘You’re more suited for a bow than an axe…’ Maybe I shouldn’t say that.
“You’re pretty good with the archer.”
This level of compliment seemed appropriate. If I praised too much, Revan might feel embarrassed.
Based on past experiences, Revan was the type who was subtly weak to compliments and gratitude. It was evident from how he vehemently refused the forced kick option.
He had been so intense in his refusal—I could still recall that chat vividly.
Come to think of it, Revan must have eaten the chicken I sent. His image suggested he would only eat things like chicken breast and salad, which was why I had intentionally sent heavily seasoned chicken and cheese balls.
Sometimes, people need an excuse like ‘I got it as a gift, so I had no choice.’
Even so, that kind of gift wouldn’t be enough. Being selected for the tournament might have been thanks to the highlight videos Revan helped with. I didn’t want to be ungrateful.
Right.
Perhaps I should start by regularly hosting Revan’s broadcast during my own endings. For some reason, my streams had been getting quite a lot of viewers lately, which should be helpful.
It would be best to start with a surprise today. If I mentioned it in advance… Revan’s personality would probably lead him to refuse again.
No need for him to be so modest.
