Chapter 31: Chapter 31: Selling retro games
I have been visiting the Tokyo office of Nikkendo continuously.
The discussion about the retro game set was over, and the next step is the Legend of Zeldo.
I am currently working with Sania on translating a huge amount of text.
I headed to the development room of the localization team and began checking the progress.
When I played the game in handheld mode, the Maldean characters were a bit squashed and the text was hard to read.
"The text in the game is a bit too small, so it's hard to read the word for Maldeans."
"I see. Let's increase the font size a little."
They did not complain and corrected every little detail.
"I'm sorry about the voice part, but at the moment I can't afford to prepare a voice from Maldea."
"It can't be helped. Let's keep the Japanese voice and add subtitles."
It turned out that hiring professional actors to record in Mardea would cost a lot of money.
In a situation where software sales are still only in the thousands, it is impossible to invest that much.
Even on Earth, there are many Western games that don't have Japanese voices. I guess it can't be helped.
I decided to put this off as a problem to be solved sooner or later.
After the meeting, I went to a warehouse in the suburbs.
It was to receive the newly produced Switz.
This time, they prepared 7,000 units. That's an increase of 1,000 units every time.
As soon as this is done, it must be delivered to the customers waiting on the distant planet.
I packed the software and peripherals into the transport plane then I bid farewell to the sales manager.
I activated the device on my arm and I disappeared from the earth.
Planet Maldea.
I step out of the warp room and quickly went out of the lab and head towards the office district.
As I returned to the Galerina Company, I heard the familiar call handling voice.
"We are apologize for the inconvenience. We would like to ask you to wait a little longer for the main unit to arrive….hyaa!"
The call was cut off, and Fio screamed.
"Uhh, please don't be mad at me ..., please stop it .... Let's play a game then."
When I opened the door, Fio was engrossed in the screen playing lump Damasy, as if trying to escape from reality.
It's a lump-rolling game with a unique gameplay and a quirky vibe.
"La-la-la-la-la I'm a massive lump!"
It need big courage to sing a humming song at work.
Well, I wouldn't complain if shewas able to handle calls properly.
"I'm back."
As I walked in, Galena stood up and turned to look at me.
"Finally. So, did you get the goods?"
"Yes. However, only 7,000 units are currently on hand."
"They want us to have 7,000 units to last a month? Tell them to prepare more."
Sania frowned in disapproval.
"They' re doing their best to increase the number. Also, we have new software coming out next month, so I' m planning to have a large shipment to coincide with that."
Galena shrugs her shoulders at my explanation.
"Well, we have to sell what we have anyway. I'll get it to the warp bureau right away, according to the order list."
We checked the list on our devices and proceeded to arrange the shipping address.
"It's all toy stores, isn't it?"
"That's true. We haven't had any additional orders from department stores."
"I guess it's a matter of audience. No one buys entertainment in department stores."
At the moment, children and their parents who come to the toy store are the main customers of Switz.
There are not that many toy stores in the capital of Maldea.
Sooner or later, we' ll have to expand our sales network throughout the country.
When the software for adults is released, I would like to do business with stores that attract adults accordingly.
But, well, that will have to wait until after Zeldo arrives.
The Retro Game Pack will be released next month.
I've already received the software samples, so we need to start going around to the retailers tomorrow to introduce the new software.
If we don't get the orders from the retailers early, it will happen that the software is not available in the stores on the day of release.
However, that will start tomorrow.
After finishing the shipment of Switz today, I decided to finish my work and go home.
When I returned to my parents' house, my mother immediately prepared dinner for me.
"Yeah, only toy stores deal with us."
"Oh, really? Well, at least that's good enough for now."
I ate a home-cooked meal while talking with my mother.
After all, I feel at ease when I returned home.
Even though Earth is the home of my previous life, sleeping in hotels and airplanes was exhausting.
I rested my body comfortably on the bed in my room, which was familiar to me.
The next day.
We immediately decided to split up and go around to the retailers to sell the Retro Game Pack.
I headed to a large toy store in the capital and met the manager who took care of me before.
"Well, Switz is very popular not only with children but also with their parents. I'm often asked if there' s any new software coming out."
The manager explains to me about the state of the customers.
It seems that they are already expecting the next software. It's a very good situation.
"Thank you very much. It takes a long time just to localize game software, so it can't be released quickly. But we have a new release coming out next month."
"Hoo. What's it like?"
"Here's the sample. It's a smaller scale game than the previous ones, but it's an all-star package of some of the best games of all time. Each one is very interesting, so please give it a try."
I took out the switz containing the sample software and placed it on the counter.
The manager immediately began to examine the contents while playing it himself.
"Hmm, so I can play multiple games. But this Tetras is very well made. If you put all the blocks in a row, they disappear."
"Yes, you can get a high score by erasing four rows at once with straight bars. There are also seven other softwares in the package, so you can enjoy a wide variety of games with just one software."
"Hmm, this is very attractive."
As I discussed it with the manager at the counter, a child came into the store and saw the sample package.
"Ah! New Switz software! Mom, buy it!"
"You just bought Maruo running one last month. You'll have to wait until your birthday."
The mother advises, but the curiosity of the child does not stop.
Children without prejudice who come to the toy store for play will pick it up if it is interesting, whether it is from the earth or not.
"Hmm. It seems to be well received, huh? I'll order about ten of them for now."
Then, naturally, the store manager became more interested.
I guess we should start with the toy store.
I flew around using the warp station and visited other retail stores.
When I returned to the Galerina office, Sania had just returned.
"How did it go?"
"Yeah, it was pretty good. I got a lot of orders."
Apparently, Sania is also getting the same response.
"As for the games, which one was the most popular?"
"Oh, right. Of course Tetras and Donkyuu were popular, but Rockmen and Gladius were also very popular. It seems that children and adults enjoy stories about defeating enemies in space."
"Indeed, the shooting games were well received by the store managers."
Gladius is one of the most popular shooting games of the Famicom era.
You fly around the universe, shooting incoming enemies with bullets and rays of light, and evolving your own fighter.
This kind of perspective may feel familiar to Mardea, who has experienced invasion wars from other planets.
The Rockmen also seem to be popular for their cute sci-fi vibe.
These two games included in the Retro Game Pack were very helpful in increasing pre-order sales.
Just as I hoped, the people of Maldea would enjoy the old game.
Sania pointed her finger at me as if she remembered something.
"Oh, by the way, I got a call from Sherard the confectioner. She said she made a new product using maple syrup and wants you to come if you want."
Oh, that reminds me, there was a store that ordered maple syrup from me.
I'll have to make a little visit there.
