Chapter 38: EXTRA 1: Negotiations with Lina from the Diplomat Skaar Perspective
My name is Randall Skaar.
I'm an American diplomat.
I've been working for the United States Government until this day, I am 51 years old.
I have handled many difficult negotiations in my career.
Unprecedented new projects and projects that have been in the red from the start.
I' ve been facing such challenges all the time and have managed to get through them.
Of course, there are another reason why I was chosen to take charge of the negotiations with Maldea.
This deal was reckless, or rather, completely unpredictable.
After all, this is the first time mankind is negotiating with aliens.
I wasn't sure if it would even be an real exchange, prior to whether it would be profitable or not.
I wondered if I was destined to draw the wrong lottery.
That's what I thought at first.
It all started when NASA discovered what appeared to be a civilization on a distant planet in space.
The U.S. government begins sending signals to the planet in an attempt to communicate with it.
The message was a friendly one, but we didn't expect much of a reply.
First of all, do the aliens have enough civilization to receive our signals?
Even if they do, will they be able to analyze our signals?
And even if they could, would they have the technology to send a reply?
It was seen as highly unlikely that a creature from a strange planet could overcome those hurdles.
But the reply came, easily overcoming all hurdles.
And in proper English, the ambassador sent a message.
The planet is called Maldea.
But what is surprising is what comes next.
The person who replied, Lina Marderita, was coming straight to Earth.
The U.S. government was taken aback by this.
Earth's space program is still in the process of refining the technology to travel within the same galaxy.
There is no way we can go to distant stars outside our solar system.
But this person insisted on coming alone.
In other words, they have the technology to travel between the stars as a matter of course.
At this point, the difference in the level of civilization was obvious.
Negotiations were forced us to take a backseat, and I, who was used to such transactions, was put in charge.
As I was in charge of the important negotiations, I carefully planned how I would play the game with Mardea.
There is a possibility that we might be invaded from their side.
There were daily discussions within the U.S. government about such contingencies.
Then the day of the alien's visit arrived.
She had communicated that she was going to land in Washington D.C., so the U.S. police and military decided to conduct a secret search.
But in fact, she landed in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
It was quite out of location. What kind of technology is this? Are there any safety issues?
The ambassador came to the White House with endless worries and uncertainties.
What appeared was a beautiful girl with pink hair.
I wondered if this girl had come alone to conduct diplomacy.
I couldn't believe it.
I was surprised that she looked almost human or elf-like, but what was remarkable was that she is 15 years old.
A little girl, younger than my own daughter, came to negotiate with the U.S. government all by herself.
As a father, I felt something bizarre at this point.
But she officially arrived as an ambassador. We have no choice but to treat her as a host.
This may be the norm on other planets. We should not measure aliens by the common sense of the earth.
We saw her as a representative of Maldea and threw a welcome party for her.
Afterwards.
When we sat down to negotiate, Miss Marderita began to speak in a firm tone.
The magical products of Maldea that she presented. It was something that could only be described as revolutionary.
A stone that can be used by anyone to perform simple magic.
A box that can shrink an object to a hundredth of its original size.
Both were goods that had the power to transform the economy and culture of the planet.
How can we confront such an opponent?
What level of civilization and military power does that planet have?
I was shaking with fear as I worked to meet the demands of the Mardea side.
I was told that the other side was in need of a rare entertainment item.
Honestly, at this point, I could predict that Mardea was not interested in Earth.
She wanted us to give her unusual playthings, not technology or resources.
It was hardly serious trade at all.
Due to the large difference in civilization, there was a possibility that we would not be able to present anything useful to Maldea.
We rushed to gather the most extravagant food and entertainment items from around the world.
Normally, We would have limited myself to American products, but this was not the time for such favoritism.
The planet Earth might be completely ignored.
For the prestige of the US Government, I wanted to avoid that.
The ambassador was eating sushi, a Japanese dish, with a great deal of relish.
It was a good thing I had gathered all the food from around the world.
There seemed to be something that suited her palate.
I was so relieved.
And that's when I presented the entertainment items.
Miss Marderita did not pay attention to the other items and seemed to be absorbed in the video game.
"Did you like the video game?"
"Yes, it's very interesting. It's the kind of entertainment we don't have in Maldea."
She seemed to be trying to look calm, but she couldn't hide her excitement.
The expression on her face was that of a normal-aged boy or girl, and even though she was at work, she reminded me of my daughter.
Anyway, it seems that this kind of entertainment doesn't exist on that planet.
In particular, Miss Marderita's eyes lit up when she saw Japanese games such as Legend of zeldo and Final Fantasia.
These titles are popular in the U.S., I know these titles, too.
However, I wondered if the perception of the Maldeans was more Japanese.
While I was thinking about this, the first day's negotiations were over.
At a press conference the next day, the President introduced Miss Marderita to the world.
It was sensational, and the world's media, the masses, went wild.
When I got home, even my wife and daughter were talking about it.
"Hey, Dad, did you meet Lina Marderita?"
"Yeah. I'm the negotiator."
"Wow! I didn't know you have such a great job."
My college-age daughter, who wasn't too interested in me, was the first to praise my work.
The power of the aliens is something to be reckoned with.
The magic stone that Miss Marderita brought in was immediately sent to the laboratory.
"T-this is ….."
"It's a stone with tremendous energy. It's definitely an unknown substance."
The researchers began to analyze the magic stone as if they were obsessed with it.
As for the shrinking box, the government decided to keep it for transporting supplies in case of emergency.
About two weeks have passed since then.
The ambassador of Maldea came to Earth again.
At our second round of negotiations, We intended to begin preparations for a full-scale trade.
But what she offered was far more than I expected.
She said that if we could collect magic stones in quantities of ten thousand on the earth, we could eliminate the disaster.
It's a pipe dream that I would normally cut and discard, but It's true that there is magical power in that stone.
In the first place, the value of the trade is infinitely higher than the value of the shrinking box alone.
We also respected her words and tried to follow Miss Marderita's will as much as possible.
She still wanted video games as a trade object.
To put it bluntly, it's a mess.
A magic stone that might solve a huge problem the earth is facing, that might save humanity.
And we're talking about trading entertainment items.
I know that video games have become a huge industry, but it was still a bizarre deal.
According to Miss Marderita, magic stones and boxes are commonplace in Maldaea, and trade with the video game is quite possible.
How advanced is the world of Maldea?
The immeasurable power of the planet made us scratch our heads.
Anyway, it seemed that we had to go with video games.
I tried to introduce her to one of the biggest companies in the US that dealt with games.
But she immediately came up with the name Nikkendo.
And she bowed to me, saying that was the good choice for the first time.
I wonder if their tastes are similar to the Japanese.
Nevertheless, it was reasonable that Nikkendo would be her first choice.
Also if we make her in a bad mood, the negotiations might have to be canceled.
We hurriedly agreed and immediately set about contacting Nikkendo and the Japanese government.
As a result of the negotiations, the U.S. and Japanese governments agreed to provide support to Nikkendo.
Miss Marderita volunteered to go to Nikkendo headquarters in Japan to participate in the development of the localization.
It was also a very strange situation.
Why is the ambassador, who is the face of the planet, doing the job of a technician as it is?
Why is no one else coming besides her?
It was just too insane.
As I thought, there seemed to be no doubt that, as she said, the headquarters of Maldea was not interested in Earth.
If that were the case, this trade would be between Miss Marderita and us alone.
How much can be entrusted to just one girl?
The days pass by with a mountain of anxiety.
She seemed to be a good engineer, and she was able to complete and launch a switz that was designed for Maldea's family environment.
The question is, will it sell?
As I waited for the results while going through my daily tasks, I received good news from her.
Apparently, Earth's entertainment was accepted in Maldea as well.
The sales at the launch were so well received that some stores sold out in the same day.
People on a distant planet are obsessed with Maruo.
The news soon spread all over the earth, and the game fans were in a festive mood.
Hypermaruo was a popular video game when I was in high school.
That was in the late 1980s.
At that time, the Nikkendo game console was beginning to be recognized in the United States.
I also remember playing Maruo many times at my friend's house.
At the time, I thought it was just a fun game.
In hindsight, I guess it was a symbol of a new era.
With the help of a timeless game, the business between Earth and Maldea was somehow taking shape.
At the State Department, they were happy that the trade had been established in the meantime.
"You have done well, Mr. Skarr. Now we can start dealing with the planet Maldea."
"Yes, but it's not over yet."
I talked to my boss and for the first time in long times I was able to get home before dark.
On the way home I stopped at Wellmart to buy new Switz and Maruo.
"Oh, honey, did you buy Switz?"
"That's not very Dad-like."
When I got home, my wife and daughter seemed surprised by my shopping.
"Well, it's a valuable trade item."
From now on, I will continue to take the lead in diplomacy with Miss Malderita.
If I didn't even know the modern Maruo, I knew it would interfere with our negotiations.
After dinner.
I connected Switz to the monitor in the living room and started the game.
The game I' ll be playing is called "Hypermaruo Odessia".
Now Maruo was portrayed in a 3D animated world as gorgeous as a pixie movie.
The game had evolved a lot without me even knowing it.
The charm of the round-faced old man flying around energetically was still there, just as it was then.
Oops, I've been attacked by a cannonball.
"You're not very good at this, are you, Dad?"
"I'll do better next time."
I feel like I'm talking to my daughter a little more than I used to.
Since then, I've been doing a lot of research on games.
My living room is lined with everything from old school consoles to the latest Play Static and Xbax.
I'm building up my knowledge so that I'll be ready for any future dealings.
We don't know yet how powerful the magic stones will be.
However, we are accumulating a solid number of stones in the UN.
In the near future, we plan to carry out the elimination of the disaster under the leadership of Miss Malderita.
If successful, it will undoubtedly be a moment in Earth's history.
Looking at yutube, I saw that Mistress Mardelita was streaming a game tournament at a toy store on that planet.
Oh, I see.
Now, in Maldea, the same game boom as on Earth at that time will begin.
The thought of that made me feel warm inside.
