Jin's War

Chapter 49: The Outer Plains Part 1 (Drake)

1.

It didn't take long for Naya to know, how screwed she was. The bus tore through the road, ripping up rubble and cars alike. Her thoughts of Jin and the Paige girl disappeared, filed away in a new folder called "if I live through this". There was chaos, a lot of yelling and running, but no one had lost their minds, butts were still in seats, fingers on buttons. It was enough to let her stumble forward. Every pothole stole her legs away from her, gravity body slamming her hard enough to make the screeching of steel-on-steel sound like cheering of wrestling fans.

Finally, she got to the front to see the bus was about to ram into a building. What was she supposed to do without a license, let alone a bus license?

Another pothole, a big one.

For a split second, she lost all balance and clung to the steering wheel, her eyes shut tight. It spun sharply dropping her on her butt before the bus veered. It rose on two wheels and skid as it turned. Naya found herself sliding on the floor when the slope tilted threatening to drop her through the window that hovered centimetres off the ground.

She'd be hooked on the frame and be grated like cheese.

Desperate clinging unable to fix high riding panties.

On two wheels, the bus still pushed, gaining speed. Using strength from reserves so alien they felt more stolen than earned, Naya pulled herself up. At that moment the bus landed flat.

Her breathing eased.

The bus bulldozed through the city, but the road was clear. There was time to think of a way out. She shut her eyes picturing an escape. There was no policy on a situation so… unique. So a bunch of checklists were pulled up: Jumping was first to be crossed off, she wouldn't risk it. All around her were shards of broken glass, cars and rubble, jumping meant landing at the same speed as the bus. Instant death, if she was lucky.

Just then there was a bump and a horrible rising sensation. Her eyes widened, the road ran out. Blurry eyes hadn't seen a clear road, they'd seen a slope.

Stupid

The bus shot up.

Naya threw up a little in her mouth. The weightlessness and butterflies churning up the breakfast her mother ordered.

The bus was airborne.

She bent and spat before clutching the steering wheel.

How much time did she have before the bus dropped? The world below could be seen from a tear in the front of the bus.

There was a crevasse below. Her checklists of solutions floated as if caught in space, floating, single file, out an open window. Jumping was it. She'd never make it to the door, let alone open it.

The 'you're doing it again' committee formed, filing all the correct paperwork. The reactor created the same sensation of giving up from the night before.

'What else was she supposed to do?'

The feeling needed to be fought, battled to the ground.

A finger reached out and pulled out a lever that had been forgotten during repairs.

She clapped.

From behind and through the floor, two heads emerged. The unicorn bit her blazer and pulled her through the windscreen as if it wasn't there. She was dragged by the unicorn before they landed gently. The bus exploded behind them with such force it might as well have been a ballistic missile, the force ate at the air like nothing she'd ever seen, the world bulging like muscle flexing, then suddenly the flame pulled in, the world shivered then, physics took a course in law and the force and fire faded burning itself out.

Naya was dropped neatly and courteously onto her feet, but her legs gave up and she crumpled on her back.

The White head neighed, there was a laugh in it.
